How realistic is the fictional Star Wars Clone Armor, /k/?

I mean, it should work alright.. right?

Fucking hot. Fucking heavy. Like, impossibly heavy.

Is it realistic that an only vaguely humanoid race without a history of experiencing war first hand would design a clunky, impractical suit of armor for their troops of different proportions to themselves that was colored in ultraviolet and cut corners to make it mass-producable for a billion+ size army? Of course.

Phase I armor appears to be an attempt used to make standard republic Trooper armor easier to mass produce, nu-canon or no.

According to lore, Stormtrooper armor is supposed to be better... BUT all the goddamn time people just punch them in the helmet and they're out of commission.

So, if I had to guess... probably not protective at all. Also, WW1-era Lobster Armor looks less clunky. Realism's kinda pointless because sci-fi.
>>
>>32508776
Part of the problem's that blasters are like getting hit with the force of a hand grenade. The armor mostly just turns "definitely dead" to "probably survive if they can get you to a bacta tank."
>>
>>32508776
Same anon here, I forgot to mention the Arditi's "Farina" armor.
>>
>>32508985
In the lore, they mostly protect from grazing hits and frag, but most of all area-of-effect energy and shock/concussive force.
>>
>>32509071
Then why do people have no problem punching a Stormtrooper in the helmet and knocking him out?
>>
>>32509118

plot armor.
>>
>>32508133
They don't need camouflage, because droids can see their ass from miles away regardless. Also, they are clones and attack in massive waves that are utterly expendable.
>>
>>32509118
Because the helmets don't do much of anything besides carry super fancy electronics.

The actual armor looking pieces of the armor are pretty shitty at stopping damage; remember, this is mega-mass produced stuff.

It's the bodyglove underneath that does most of the damage absorption, really, and it tends to stop at the neck.

Why? I don't fucking know, I'm just explaining the way books and shit explain it.
>>
>>32509179
The lore is also VERY inconsistent about this how battle-ready the clones are.

One day, the clones are top-of-the-line trained and ready for just about any combat scenario possible - the next, they are 40k-styled Imperial Guardsmen throwing away their lives at the call of battle.
>>
>>32509269
Well, you have to remember that losses in the immediately combat-ready batches on Geonosis were massive, and there were variances in output quality.
>>
>>32509269
Regular clones are for throwing at problems until you either run out of clones or the problem goes away.
Commandos and ARCs are for when you need a more elegant solution.
>>
>>32507974
its plausible that the armor is extremely effective at thermal energy diffusion but shit at concussive and blunt force., for the same reason Kevlar is less than ideal for medieval warfare.

We see troops go down, but its entirely possible they are still alive, but in shock. We see a monk use a Stormtrooper as a human shield in Rogue One, but the trooper seems to take quite a few shots with minimal support. Star Wars offense > defense, but since they have armor at all it suggests it has a purpose, otherwise they'd run around like Rebels with just cloth and pot helmets.

>>32508985
This is probably the big thing. We know people CAN get shot and live, and we know bacta is a hell of a thing. Leia gets shot at endor even, and Kylo Ren takes a shot in 7. it's doable, if hard.

>>32509269
The truth is somewhere in between.

Yes, generic clones are somewhat expendable, but they arent as much as droids. they have spec ops units, logistics, pilots, and officers. Its probably best to compare them to US soldiers in quality, but since they have identical training and backgrounds the bell curve is probably shifted to "better" (worst troops get cafeteria duty/trash/bullshit). It's iffy on the number too. in AotC, the kamino lady says they had something like 4 million units ready, for a Galaxy spanning war. 4 million "units" could be 4 million troops, 4 million platoons, 4 million companies, 4 million divisions, etc., ignoring wether these are the combat units or if enablers are included.
>>
>>32509269
>>32509311
IIRC the clones' training was always good. The problem, particularly on Geonosis, is that they were given to jedi "generals" with no experience or training.
>>
How do they take off the helmets? It goes under the chin to the neck and doesnt appear to have a hinge.

They never built any prop suits for the prequels, so the designers goofed and made something that would be painful if not impossible to actually wear. Every physical version I've seen eased up on that neck part.

Lorewise you're supposed to be able to just slap it on and yank it off.

Because they haven't had a meaningful war in so long they literally don't have a standing army of necessary merit.

The experience literally doesn't exist, and studying strategy from books can only take you so far.

At least these peacekeepers have magical reality warping powers that can sometimes help them even in their inexperience, and the army comes with its own leadership structure below them that's as competent as it's possible to be short of having actual experience.

The Jedi look flash and scare the piss out of minor aggressors, and are on the higher end of the ass whipping scale on a personal, maybe even tactical level.

But neither of them were ever trained or intended to command armies.

Lead them? Sure. Lead by example, kick ass and win morale victories. But command is an entirely different ball game.

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Battle_meditation

This shit right here, is why you put jedi in command of armies.
>>
>>32511196

I think the point is more that you can't make armor that's perfectly viable against every threat, especially if you're trying to produce it at literal galactic scale.

Your kevlar can stop bullets or it can stop stabs or it can stop smashes, but if it's good at stopping one it's gonna be shit at stopping the others. And if you want it to stop all three then it necessarily won't be as good at stopping any one as a dedicated panel would be, unless you throw a shitload of resources at it.

So you armor your clone troopers against their primary threat first (blaster fire), and then secondary threats (explosions, slug guns) as budget allows. And even then, your armor can only be so good because you only have so much production to throw at it per unit.

>At least these peacekeepers have magical reality warping powers that can sometimes help them even in their inexperience

And that's still a tactical advantage at absolute best.

It doesn't enable them to make sound strategic decisions, it somewhat mitigates their untrained attempts at strategy by enabling their fleets to clutch like absolute monsters.

But they're still shitty at grand strategy because they've had no training for it, and no experience with it. There is no accumulated institutional knowledge beyond what the archives can tell them, and the use of that is limited because the nature of warfare is always changing.

They were better off than the CIS and their canned soldiers, but it's like pounding a nail with a frozen banana. Yeah, it works better than if you'd used a regular banana, and yeah that banana's really tasty if you instead decide to thaw it and eat it, but it is still hell on the banana and you'd be much better served with the actual tool for the job - a hammer.

It sure as fuck didn't save the Endar Spire.

Didn't the Endar Spire get gangbanged by multiple destroyers and only have two jedi on board? One of which, was a padawan, and the other who had effectively zero experience, and wasn't even aware of his powers. On the other side, you had multiple sith, and Malak's right hand man, Darth Bandon.
>>
>>32511302
What are you talking about two jedi. they were atleast a dozen. Just so they can keep an Eye on Revan.
>>
>>32511302
This is exactly my point.

It was a shitty strategic decision that put them in that scenario in the first place.

They hoped that Basket Case and her handlers (The jedi that were killed in the tutorial) with her battle meditation would be enough to clutch the battle, but at the end of the day superior strategy won out.

You can have all the tactical advantages you want, if you fuck up your strategic level decisionmaking you'll lose gloriously and in a pile of dead enemies and spent charge packs... but you'll lose all the same.
>>
>>32511306
It's been years since I played KOTOR. Also, unnamed scrub jedi don't count, the only important jedi on that ship were Bastila and Revan. No names can only stand against other no names. Of the named force users on the ship, one was a dark lord of the sith, and I believe I already mentioned the other two.

>but at the end of the day superior strategy won out.

Malak having access to the Star Forge is what won him battles. He couldn't be beaten because he had an effectively infinite amount of resources to throw at the republic. IIRC the opening text crawl says that Bastila's unusually strong affinity for battle meditation is the only advantage the republic had, and the only thing keeping them in the fight.

>>

Precisely. It's why I love the Geonosian arena battle; it perfectly demonstrated just how far out of their depth the Jedi were in war. They came out swinging their sabers, acting like the galaxy's biggest badasses, but as soon as droid infantry started pouring in, the whole thing deteriorated into a free-for-all. They had absolutely no idea how to fight as a unit; they had never trained for it.

They had not faced a true challenge to the existence of the order or the Republic in a thousand years, and it showed.

What I'll assume you're asking is why wouldn't the enemy use bioweapons specifically targeting clones. There was a book about that actually. One for One you'd probably be pretty hard pressed to find anyone better than an ARC trooper. Not impossible, but it'd be pretty damn hard. At least in the case of how they were originally written. The in canon depiction its a little murkier. Originally there was only 100 ARC troopers that were personally trained by Jango Fett. In canon now, whether or not those original 100 exist is kinda ambiguous. Clones are just promoted to ARCs if they do something exceptionally badass or show exceptionally outside the box thinking. While these are still badass dudes, you can't really compare em to the guys Fett himself trained, which now may or may not exist.

Nano materials, specifically carbon nano tube weave is what you would need for armor. Millions maybe even billions of layers of these weaved layers stacked, compressed and adherred or lined in some polymer coating formed into plates.

"Alright everyone, here's the plan. We're all going to infiltrate a large, open, public arena on a planet that is actively creating a droid army large enough to challenge the authority of the Republic. >>
>>32511520
Pre-disney the stormie armor is actually supposed to be far better than phase one or two clone armor with the plates being extremely hard to penetrate with any physical projectile or melee weapon while dispersing the impact of a blaster bolt and minimizing damage to the wearer giving them a better chance at survival. The uncovered portions of the black body suit is the major weakness of it that even murderous teddy bears with bows can penetrate. It also does not protect from things that would snap limbs anyways. Clone armor was particularly good for shrapnel and MIGHT save you from a bad shot if you're lucky. Clone armor vs stormtrooper armor is basically IIIa vs III. Clone Commando armor is the exception here and definitely above stormtrooper armor in many ways including protection of the wearer.

Post disney stormies still don't just die from a blaster shot. In Rebels they're regularly shown squirming around on the ground like they just got hit in the gut with a sledgehammer but still plenty alive. Clones die by the truckloads in the Clone Wars series from similar hits.

The biggest problem across both versions is that the stormies were garbage compared to the clones when it came to actually being soldiers.
>>
>>32513014

>>32513485

That it provides any protection at all from blaster bolts is impressive. Just think about what they have to do to your body; they kill through thermal transfer, not blood loss. The wounds they cause don't look so bad from the outside, but they cook your insides, flash-boiling fluids that tear up organ tissue.

Same reason why getting stabbed with a lightsaber is so lethal. You'd think a thin blade that instantly cauterizes a wound wound be more survivable than most gunshots, but while it's in you, it's doing to your guts what it did to that blast door Qui-Gon was stabbing in Ep. 1.

>>
>>32509833
From what I've read about the Kaminoan's and specialty clone troopers, they can genetically modify certain traits, such as intelligence, strength, and, most importantly, free thought. It's literally like having the create a player skill sliders from a sports game, except on a clone. The more specialized yhe clone, the greater the skills given. That's why most the named troopers we know, that portray distinct personalities, are Commanders, ARC troopers, and etc.

here was the con:

1- work their way into the government
2- use business and gov't ties to keep the Republic from doing anything (literally drag it into procedure and courts). This delegitimizes the Republic and makes the leadership weak
3- become Chancellor, be a reformer to slowly centralize power. at the same time, push a succession movement. this is around Phantom Menace time.
4- fake a crisis (Clone Wars) to centralize MORE power. at the same time, make the Jedi occupied and weaken them in both number and morale.
5-Order 66 to kill the Jedi
6- Declare self Emperor, bringing peace and stability to a ruined galaxy
7- Expand, occupy, and rebuild. Make your new order. tie up Senate remnants in procedure.
8- Eliminate/liquidate remaining militias, etc. Eliminate Senate
9- Rule with overwhelming power

It was a long con, but it worked up until the Rebels get Luke Skywalker and blow the Death Star

That's actually not a bad idea.

Goes from tusken raider, to jedi.

Order 66 happens, gets pissed, kills all his clones, becomes a tusken warlord.

Territory gets close to Lars homestead, obi wan beats him, disgrace him in front of his tribe.

Becomes a bounty hunter (maybe hang out with Boba) captured by melt faced sadists. Tortured until he falls to the dark side, and breaks himself out.

Finds sith holocrons from bane, andeddu, revan.

Says fuck the 2 sith rule. I rule.

Removes emperor fel, smashes imperial knights.

Betrayed by his number two, "dies."

Comes back "more powerful than you can imagine." Literally cannot stay dead at this point.

Skywalker plot armor defeats him, then gets thrown into the sun.

The ending kinda sucks, but since he's not canon anymore they can play around with it.

I think woven carbon fiber plates would be strong enough to stop some pistol calibers, definitely shrapnel, and depending on if it's polymer infused maybe stop more than that.

It's pretty light stuff, definitely lighter than the ceramic plates we use now. Maybe combine the two somehow and get the best of both? You can form carbon fiber to pretty much any shape.

Natural selection did not favor the jedi, at all. They're idiots and their lightsaber-worship is entirely ideological. The sith inherited some of this stupidity from them, but at least their penchant for projectile based applications of the force (lightning) compensate somewhat.
>>
>>32507974
Not really.

The big pro of conventional helmets that don't have everything integrated into them is the bulk.

You can put your night vision googles in your backpack during the day(since having it on your head adds additional weight to your neck which is less than pleasant), same with the gasmask when it's not needed. You can't do this on helmet with integrated NVG/thermal(I assume) and gasmask/other stuff. Now for space era battles it might make sense(different environments may cause the need for this things to be used whole the time) but for earth-based warfare it's stupid.

See, this is why in ESB the Empire lands further away from the Rebel positions and does an armored ground assault. Even in Phantom Menace the Trade Federation lands their army on the far side of the planet.

Rather than trying to air assault right into the fire ant nest.

Yeah, thats kinda always gonna be a CIS win when you can't actually see the loss of troops. Also, Geonosis was a heavy manufacturing facility at the time so presumably the clones shut that down which would be a big strategic victory.
>>
The clone army was a ridiculously good military force held back by the fact that the Jedi were made generals instead of hiring officers from experienced groups like Mandalorian warriors or some other bunch of well known warfighters. While Jedi are certainly useful only a few of them would have had any business being even near a command position.
