Can someone outline a good argument against the whole "you make yourself a target" meme? I've talked to my friends about OC on occasion, and they all seem to believe this is the smartest reason not to, and I certainly can't convince them that it's an outlier situation.

This was elucidated in a thread yesterday or the other day, and I'll try my best to paraphrase with my own opinions on the matter added:

"Power level" is or should be linked to hobbies and interests that are very niche or generally fall outside of accepted social norms (e.g. Bronies should be more concerned with power level, furries should be more concerned with power level, scat fetishists should be more concerned with power level, etc). If you are making the claim that the possession, interest in, practice with, and general use of firearms for self-defense, sporting, AND hunting falls into a group that needs to tiptoe around the social order, then you really deserve no place on this board and are in no way concerned with the advancement of Second Amendment rights.

The primary goal of those that seek to advance awareness and acceptance of the Second Amendment should be education, both of function and responsibility, and normalization. There used to be a time where, across the nation, you did not have to try and hide the fact that you owned a rifle. You did not have to try and hide the fact that you would fight to defend your own life. You did not have to hide the fact that you possessed a concealed weapons permit. There is no way that anyone could argue that this hasn't changed. And based on that alone, no one can argue that gun ownership, and by extension the core principle of the Second Amendment, is not threatened.

The problem with open carry is that it is most often demonstrated by the fringe members of the interest group; the loudest (and often unfortunately the most uneducated or close-minded) individuals, and while it is good that there are people that are still willing to fight for our interests, right to defense, and hobbies, often these individuals do more harm than good by nature of their personality, dress, and mannerisms.

I may do a double-take if I saw a well-put-together, quiet, respectful, and clean individual openly carrying a pistol. I would only harbor condemnation if that individual were instead overweight, unshaven or ungroomed, and/or causing any sort of scene to draw attention to him/herself and the fact that they were openly carrying a firearm.

In rallies and peaceful protests, I believe open carry of longarms is perfectly acceptable assuming the quality of the majority is sound. In day-to-day life, the purpose of open carry is for personal defense and security; to that end a rifle is not only overkill but also a hindrance and potential hazard where a handgun is less conspicuous and gives less opportunity for an assailant to disable or otherwise harm you with your own weapon.

tl;dr, there is nothing inherently wrong with open carry (this coming from someone who used to think it was stupid), the problem comes from the way it is most often personified.
