Sup /k/ommandos, this is my first time visiting you and I wanna know what you guys think about lever action 30-30s.

I am considering getting something like a Marlin 336, Rossi rio grande or even buying an old 2nd hand winchester.

Purposes will be shooting everything bigger than a rabbit up to deer & young pigs, and defending a quarter acre property.
>>
>>32504925

Get a lever action .308.

Fuck that weak .30-30 shit.
>>
>>32504925
your question is like asking what do people think of revolvers. They work they do what they are supposed to. There are gucci ones and there are budget ones. They are good for fudd work but thats about it. You are not going to win a firefight but you could kill trespasser/burgular. 30-30 is accredited to have killed quite alot of game in the states. Its ballistically alot like 7.62x39.

They are fun guns and fudd guns. Good for the range and hunting.
>>
30-30 ammo isn't really cheap. I'd do 357 or 44mag; out of a rifle length barrel those perform quite well. If you need more oomph, go with .45-70.
>>
>>32504925
A pre 64 Winchester model 94 is the best bet for a solid 30-30 but you'll pay a premium.
I like the Marlin guns but in the 30-30 the Winchester 94 feels lighter and to me is easier to get up on target.
I wouldn't buy a Rossi unless you absolutely cannot afford a Marlin or Winchester.
Just my 2 cents so take that for what it's worth.
>>
>>32504959
>30-30 weak
its pretty much rimmed 7.62x39.

get a lever action in 30-06.

fuck that weak .308 shit.

>You are not going to win a firefight
The Russians and the American cavalry did pretty fucking okay with them.
>>

in WWI. when everyone else used bolt actions.
>>
>>32504975
Unless the guy he is "gunfighting" is using a mag fed semi auto rifle a lever action is perfectly adequate for self defense.
Also gunfights are for stupid people, you should have the situational awareness to avoid it if you don't have overwhelming numbers and firepower.
>>
>>32505004
>>32504994
and to add on to my point they were using 95's.
which is faster to load than a standard lever gun.
>>
>>32505007
>Unless the guy he is "gunfighting" is using a mag fed semi auto rifle a lever action is perfectly adequate for self defense.

I guess you cant read full sentences
>but you could kill trespasser/burgular.
>>
>>32505007
Nobody here will be using a semi-auto, I live in a nogunz country where you need to have a fair bit of land to buy a semi auto. I value guns that I can shoot and chamber another bullet without taking my focus off range also.
>>
>>32505126
Then a lever action is more than enough gun.
>>
>>32504977
Is 357 good for deer and smaller adult pigs? I know it'll fuck people up good and proper
>>
>>32505146
it can be as long as its within 50 yards. any further and i would feel its not lethal enough. for pigs maybe 70 is your max but i wouldnt feel right shooting an animal out farther than that with .357 mag.

The answer is45 colt OP
>cheap to reload
>easy to manage
>can be loaded hotter than 44 mag and into 454 powers
>dat cowboy feel
>can take down a hog/deer no problems
>>
>>32505211
>>can be loaded hotter than 44 mag and into 454 powers
please dont try and kill OP.
>>
>>32505269
with the right lever/wheel gun it can withstand it. Don't try in colt single actions or reproductions and you're pretty much good. in my ranch hand i outclassed my dads 44 magnum even with a heavier bullet
>>
>>32504959
Are we talking a BLR in .308 Win or a Marlin 308 Express?

The former is a solid rifle, but uses a box mag instead of a tubular.

The latter is hard to find and I'm concerned about the future availability of ammo.
>>
>>32505146
.357 mag is questionable for medium game and you really shouldn't take shots past 50 yards.

.44 mag is just fine inside 50 yards.
>>
>>32505384
He's right, a lever gun will thrive on loads that would wreck a pistol. Obviously you will blow up any gun past a certain point.
>>
>>32504925
>>32504959

.45-70 or its nothing.
>>
>>32505680
most 45 colt +p ammunition says right ont he box "ruger only" (code for no old cowboy single action reproductions) ive shot them all the time in my lever gun, buffalo bore, corbon, and works great. modern lever guns are designed to withstand modern ammunition.
>>
What's /k/'s opinion on rossi lever guns. Are they decent for the price?
>>
>>32506879
Bit rough out of the box. There is a good YouTube video on what to polish for the action. After that it's a great lever gun. Mine is like greased glass I recommend them
>>
>>32505626
BLRs are beyond sexy.
>>
>>32504925
Just bought the Mossberg spx464 tactical one because I like ugly / different guns
>>
>>32507719
You could have bought a marlin 336 for less. A better rifle and way better looking, you could have just bought some retarded furniture for it and still have a better rifle that looks as retarded as your logic. Congrats on the shitty mossberg rifle
>>
>>32507917
400 bucks for what appears to be a reliable 30-30. All I have on there is a small scope
>>
>>32505626

I have a WInchester 88, two actually, one in .284 winchester (fucking shitty ammo availability) and one in .308 WInchester. Similar to the BLR.
>>
>>32507989
>appears
Okay mr. Scapegoat!
Marlins can go for 350 for a quality brand. Mossberg anything besides shotgun suck ass
>>
>>32504994
Those were chambered in 7.62x54r or .30-06 silly
>>
>>32508377
or 30-40 Krag
>>
>>32504925
The gun every southern boy learns to kill on
It's a hella good short range hunting rifle but not good for much else
>>
>>32508510
They're better for horseback than bolt-action.
>>
>>32508551
Shooting from horseback serves no purpose other than to scare your horse and miss a shot
Stop watching so many westerns bro
>>
>>32504925
>.30-30
Not a good caliber for skinwalkers, which is what you should really be defending your property from.
>>
>>32505146
.357 and .44 are fifty yard guns. .30-30 is a 200 yard gun, 250 if you have good bullets. And, if you handload, you can get a lot more out of it because anyone can improve a .30-30 chamber and get an extra 200 fps with a 150 grain bullet.
>>
If 30-30 is to weak, why not get a 336 in .35 Remington? That shit goes hard. Just be sure to stock up on it when you can find it.
>>
>>32508551
The property is too small for horses, I only need something accurate to 100-150 yards in U.S. measurement. The property is a cleared quarter acre bordered by forest. The only open ground shooting I do at the moment is catching rabbits with a .22.

Are people recommending a 308 because the ammo is cheaper or because it packs a bigger punch? Because I don't really need shitloads of stopping power, as I said just deer and small pigs.
>>
>>32508893
Probably both, but in your case .30-30's plenty for deer and boar.
>>
Alright thanks guys
>>
>>32508033
Looks like they cost about the same too, ignoring "rare" pre-64 versions that are worth "at least" $3K. Though they are still making BLRs.

I'm planning to get a Marlin once I've some hunting logistics worked out, but a BLR a good price would be awful tempting.
>>
>>32508893
50-150 yards is pretty much the sweet spot for 30-30. Hornady's polymer-tipped Leverlution ammo allegedly improves the BC such that you can squeeze another 50 yards out of 30-30.
I have never tried it and really can't tell you it works one way or the other.
>>
>>32504925
30-30 is fucking expensive and not especially accurate, especially out of a lever action. I used to have a marlin 336 but I sold it awhile back and bought an SKS because I was tired of paying $1 a round for sub par accuracy.
>>
>>32508661
>Not conditioning your horses to the sound of gunfire.
It's like you don't ride down hogs as though they were injun villagers. What a homo.
