Hello /k/, /tv/ here. Is this a realistic depiction of Martian infantry combat?
>>
>infantry combat
>when you can literally just drop rocks from orbit and have them impact with the energy of a high explosive

why
>>
>>32495805
>infantry combat
>when you can literally just fire shells from a cannon and have them impact with the energy of a high explosive

never go full retard
>>
>>32495832
You can't walk to Mars.

In order to get ~180 pounds of infantryman to Mars, you have to propel ~180 pounds of crap past earth's escape velocity.

This being the case, along with the fact that camoflage is essentially impossible, makes orbital bombardment the natural use of resources.
>>
Why the fuck would you have your barrels under your arms... So you can cook your wrists or shoot off your hand? Why would anyone be on the ground if we have that kind of targeting ability. Why is this so dumb.
>>
>>32495846
If you are already on Mars, and settled there (like, hmm, the martians of the show)...

I find it amusing you're worried about escape velocity when "dropping" rocks from orbit entails a massive expenditure of energy in order to decelerate them.

Orbit is a very unsafe place, with no cover or concealment, and rarely a horizon. Space as sanctuary is a firmly 1970s era meme.
>>
>>32495909
>when "dropping" rocks from orbit entails a massive expenditure of energy in order to decelerate them

Crap, now I'm forgetting my KSP knowledge of how much Delta V it takes to deorbit shit.

>Orbit is a very unsafe place, with no cover or concealment

Yeah, but it takes a ridiculous amount of energy to actually hit something that's in orbit.

The other big problem I'm seeing is the distances. Mars is huge. You're going to tell me that on a planet with a land mass almost equal to the land mass on earth, two outposts held by rival factions are going to be within walking distance?

Infantry combat on Mars is just a weird idea. Like two people climbing Mount Everest and then hitting each other with hiking poles.
>>
>>32495792
>hey you know what this space colony needs?
>black people
>>
>>32495950
Earth is huge too and we see infantry combat. Dropping shit from orbit, while totally feasible and propably cheap in Expanse verse, isn't going to capture or defend any installations. And this is a setting where humans have lived on Mars for centuries, it's not like fighting on a never before discovered place but like desert storm 21 or something.

What cringed me most
>Full glass visors because we need to see the actors faces instead of fully armored helmets
>They didn't use the smart missile bullets from the beginning
>No drones to map the threats

Not launching rocks off a near by moon to impact them.
Tanks Heinlein.

"Like two people climbing Mount Everest and then hitting each other with hiking poles."

I have not laughed so hard this year.

Sir, take ten thousand internets for the funniest fucking statement ever made. I will be using that for the rest of my life to highlight when something is pointless.

Fucking hilarious.
>>
>>32496340
What if at the top was unlimited power and the two people were Stalin and Hitler? Nothing is pointless unless you know the context.
>>
>>32496340
are you drunk?

Listen to the words coming out of your keyboard. It takes an SM6 to hit stuff out of orbit, and that's with modern technology. An SM6 can fit on a truck. A regular rocket launch could seed orbits with tens of thousands of cubesats with cheap ion thrusters to act as smart mines.

Hmmm.

This is actually close in concept to the original Vertical Gun system the Zumwalt was supposed to carry.

What this guy said. Orbital drops are fine and dandy for when you want to wreak destruction, but when you want to capture territory, or leave habitats intact, you need infantry.

>full glass visors
The soldiers in the boarding actions didn't have full glass visors though, pic related, a Martian security force on defender against boarders. Pretty sure the opposition had them too (my money is still on them being the Mormons).

I liked that scene. Also I think it might be subtly telling about the Martian military. Where the captain talks about being the only one on the ship with any combat experience, dealing with pirates

I wouldn't be surprised if the video we see of combat here >>32496314 was a training exercise. And that while Mars has a large military, it's largely untested against anyone but pirates and other minor-league threats like rebellious Belters.

To be fair, I don't think any mount of armored helmets would really protect against contemporary weapons, not enough without ruining your situational awareness and being a pain in the ass to wear.

>>32498705
Speaking of boarding action, what was the exact reasoning that LoGHs had boarding infantry with lots of melee weaponry? I'm under the guise that they could armor their infantry enough that weaponry capable of defeating it would seriously compromise internal ship systems and whatnot. Pretty solid reasoning to have armored dudes axe-murdering each other.

For boarding they injected a hyper-combustible gas that energy weapons/small arms would detonate if they fired inside it.

Jesus, and I thought the idea of boarding in space wouldn't already be utterly nerve racking. Imagine sending sparks from an axe scrapping or something.

that's basically a perfect depiction of how i figure most people assume bullets and guns work desu

The solar system has been colonized by 3 main powers. The Earth is socialist kinda-dystopia. Mars is where the goal-oriented, driven people are, somewhat militarized; it's underoing terraforming. The belters are corporations and bluecollar libertarians freelancers (and terrorists) scattered throughout the moons and belt, they supply a lot of resources to everyone.
and there's a resident evil type corporation investigating an alien plague
>>
>>32499100
It really only reacted to their weapons, it wasn't like a gas leak.

Sounds fucking cool.
>>

I really enjoyed the books. Reasonably hard military sci-fi, at least until they went full alien. I haven't seen the tv show yet, but it looks like they sacrificed some of the science and tactics for cool visuals.

Syfy is so shit. God-awful effects but with good costumes
