Why don't modern firearms have outer threaded barrels like these? I know it adds weight, but is that the only reason?

heat

Foreigner, I don't know the word for that. You know I mean those rings around the barrel
>>32493326
Modern barrels are made from better materials so heat is less of a problem.

Those are metal fins meant to increase surface area and help the barrel cool off.

nowadays we swap the barrels instead meaning you can keep firing as long as the rifle still has ammo and cold barrels
Browning M2 has a short barrel shroud that serves as a heat sink
AR15 and derivatives barrel nut and in some instances handguard serve as very effective heat sinks, especially if barrel nut is steel
M249 fires from an open bolt, helping the weapon to run cooler in general, quick change barrels as well in addition to the handguard once again serving as a heat sink
It's pretty much the case for any weapons used today that there is some sort of built in heat sink functionality, and depending on intended rates of fire/sustained fire barrels can sometimes be quickly changed in the field
TLDR because technology has progressed, dumb fucking faggot

Quality Rifles still do this today. They dont use a riffling but they use a diamond-shape to improve cooling.
