Not that anon but sweet gun! Bolt action sgotguns are kind of rare i feel like. I grew up using a 410 bolt action that I think came from Sears and Roebuck?
>>
>>32458914
I'm pretty sure that Marlin made those too. Or it could have been Mossberg.

I'll have to go dig it out of the safe when I'm back home. That thing taught little me not to waste shells like an asshole. Haven't shot it since I was like 11 tho

ive thought about getting them before but im not sure if i have much use for one. I feel like if it was converted to .308 it would be more use.

>>32458328
>>32458914
they arent that rare, people usually just forget about them in the back of the closet.

i could have had one a few years ago for 50$ but i passed because i had no moola. That one is pretty nice though. The extractor on that bolt looks like a match for the one on a 336 marlin.

Got a maverick 88 that has an odd story. Bought it for $175 with the 28" for clays, decided I wanted to use it for HD and sold the barrel for $100. Waited like 4 months since I wasn't willing to pay for a new 18.5, Then found a bulged 28" for $30 and chopped it to 20ish.

Might sell it, not sure what for since the used market is horrific and people want like $150 for a H&R topper.

Got a $170 surplus police mag I am waiting for atm.

Nearly came at the gunstore while handling a 37 featherlight since it was so light and handy.

Can someone explain how difficult/reliable/invasive/accurate/adjustable/anything else worth mentioning the picatinny rail systems are on a shotgun?

The reason I'm asking is because my salvo 12 is almost out of ATF jail and when I put it on it's going to cover the barrel dot. Now I doubt it's going to be an issue, however if it is I want to know if putting a reddot site will be practical or not. I use the gun just for flying game if that makes a difference.
>>
>>32463316
Well, of you primarily hunt the avian variety, you may be concerned with several aspect of your shotgun that could be affected by a rail and dot.
>weight (kek, barely.)
>pointing mass (how well and quickly you can shoulder)
>peripherals (and by extension, sight picture.)
>durability (slips and falls?)

Beads have always been intuitive for me. Practice makes you better. Red dots will compensate little for flying game. But, most shotguns come pre-drilled/tapped, so adding a rail/dot is hardly permanent.

The best brand new shotgun for its price is the H&R Excel auto. For a 300$ you can get a semiautomatic shotgun. I drug mine through swamps, blizzards, and creeks. Despite me never cleaning it and never oiling it the gun never jammed and never failed me.

Position the butt of your gun in the middle of your peck (basically in line over your nipple), rather than further from your center of gravity near your shoulder joint. Yes. Certain states (Illinois comes to mind) have shotgun only hunting laws. This is designed to mimic a hunting rifle as closely as possible while still *legally* being a shotgun.

They're pretty cool shotguns. Siblings to the Ithaca 37 in that they're tough-as-nails, bottom-eject scatterguns.

They were produced in every gauge of shotgun available on the American market--.410, 28ga, 24ga, 20ga, 16ga, 12ga, and 10ga.
>tfw kinda want a 24ga version but I have NEVER seen 24ga shells available in the US
They tend to have abnormally good triggers for a shotgun, and the BPS was the last of the pump guns to lose its slam-fire capability with models without an interruptor being produced into the early 90's.

The 7-shot models were marketed originally for state police but were never exclusive to the LE market. They're rare but generally in okay shape.

I know of 3 state police agencies that officially used them, the Marine Reserves had a small few they purchased as kind of "oh shit" guns for reasons I don't know, and both the Guamanian Territorial Guard and Alaskan Territorial Guard still use them.

I have a 4-shot model in 10ga with a 32" barrel, produced in 1992, that's capable of being slam-fired.

I wish. I got an 870 Express about ten years back, one of the early ones, and it's hot dip blued--spotty, watery, blobby, uneven, faded, right out of the box, and you could rub the bluing off the sides of the receiver with your thumb and expose shiny bare metal. Shit, baking on some black engine paint or BBQ grill paint would have been an IMPROVEMENT.

I will say that the gun has run pretty well--once I got a smith to polish the burrs out of the chamber, so it would extract properly.

I have never owned a Maverick but I used to have a Mossberg 500 and I should never have sold it.
>>
>>32460167
How high does it mount the red dot? Are you able to use a normal cheekweld or are we in chinweld/hold gun on shoulder and hold face well in air to try to see reticle territory?

I know that you can mount optics on a lot of 870s but you need a stock with a high comb, or some kind of cheek rest or stock adapter, to actually use them.
>>
>>32470099
I've got a big jaw so it doesn't change my weld that much. Shooting with a bead sight actually slapped my face up

Has anyone here tried low recoil buckshot?

I ask for an acquaintance who got his wife a used 12 gauge Maverick 88 18" riot gun last month for home defense. She went to an indoor range with him and she shot it a bit. It was one of those indoor ranges where they only allow slugs with shotguns and she does NOT like shooting it. The slugs beat her up a bit. She's an elderly woman in poor health, and really a pump shotgun is probably very much non-optimum for her, but they're on a budget and it was this or a beat-up old semiauto .22 with a tube magazine that was on the rack beside it at the pawn shop, and of the two I think the Maverick was probably the better choice.

Does anyone have any recommendations or personal experience with low recoil buckshot? I've tried some local stores and found a few examples for her to try--Federal low recoil 9 pellet #00 buck, Herters (Cabelas store brand) low recoil 9 pellet #00 buck, Rio brand (made by MAXAM in Spain) low recoil 21 pellet #4 buck, and some Remington low-recoil slugs. Has anyone tried any of these, or anything else that we can recommend for her? I don't expect to be able to convince her to take up sporting clays but maybe if she can shoot the shotgun some with ammo that doesn't leave her black and blue, maybe that'll give her some confidence and make her less likely to flinch, in the event she ever has to fight for her life with it.

Should I buy one of these?

Are Turkish shotguns any good? There are lots available in Canada and the price is tempting
>>
>>32470172
Ah, okay, that's encouraging.

I know some red dots hold up on a shotgun and some don't. I am hearing good reviews of the Bushnell TRS25 on shotguns--apparently some turkey hunters swear by them--and they seem to hold up. Are there any others out there?

I'm kind of new to red dots. I just recently put a cheap Chinese "Centerpoint" brand red dot on a Ruger .22 pistol and am trying to decide whether I like it or not. It's taking some getting used to. I know people are saying "the Army uses Aimpoints and EOtechs and Trijicon ACOGs and it's scientifically proven that optical sights are superior in every way and they wouldn't be paying for them if it weren't true" but maybe I need to shoot a few more bricks of .22 through the pistol to convince me I am either faster or more accurate with the dot than I was with irons. If I can get used to the dot, I am thinking of putting one on the 870, though I know I will probably have to put some kind of homemade cheekrest on it to see through it properly.

Benelli's are nice, I got the M2 because mostly of it's inertial system (basically there's no gas system used, so operates in a strange way but more closely to a semi auto pistol than a semi auto shotgun).

The quality is there, but I'm Italian and everything else is priced almost like that, unless taking some Turkish gun.

I'd love to get myself also a pump, but the best Italy has to offer ( Fabarm STF series ) in this sense is priced as a custom Mossberg 590 so I will not for now. Also, no aftermarket like the Rem/Mossberg series.

Those bastards can into aesthetics tho, they are very tempting.
>>
>>32470256
Buy Italian or nothing at all fagot. Actually the turkish stuff is of varrying quality lately; some of it is decent and some of it is hot garbage. If you're canadian you can get a short-barrelled O/U or SxS for about $175 maplebucks + HST. They are fun toys.

Thank you very much for all that info, I bought the gun in 2014 at a small sporting goods shop in South Africa. I paid $300 for what I was told was a second hand gun, but the gun had no marks, not even the blueing was damaged on the action bars, so I believe the gun might have been bought by a old man and never fired and sold after his death. I checked the serial number and it shows that it was made in 1987.

I received some old gun magazines from my uncle from the 1980's that had an add for the shotguns, they retailed for R1000, while mossbergs and remingtons where selling for about R600, so they seem to have been a premium back then which might explain the rarity.

While watching the movie Stander, I noticed the policeman in the riot scene had a BPS, but the IMFDB page incorrectly listed it as an armscor shotgun.

The build quality on the gun is incredible, the blueing and stock to frame fit is incredible for something that was suppose to be a police shotgun.

If you literally just need a shotgun to keep you safe, there's no reason to buy anything other than a Maverick 88. If you go cheaper, you're getting into literally dangerous guns - questionable manufacturers, old guns, etc. If you go more expensive, you're gonna get prettier, smoother, better-finished shotguns. But a Mav 88 is made by a universally respected manufacturer and will do what a 12 gauge is supposed to do.

I wouldn't go that far. Most any beat-up old used 12 gauge pump on the rack at a pawn shop with a price tag of $125 will be perfectly fine, mechanically. There weren't a whole lot of really bad pump shotguns ever mass-produced. There was a Marlin 1898 that was a near-copy of the Winchester 97 that had bolts that sheared their locking lugs occasionally and people occasionally ended up with the back half of the bolt embedded in their skulls. In the 1960s S&W imported the Model 916 pump shotgun, which was also sold by some hardware and department store chains as an "Eastfield" brand firearm, actually manufactured by Howa in Japan, which had some design problems and some serious heat treatment and QC problems on critical parts, having been manufactured in Japan at a time when "made in Japan" still meant "garbage." They were prone to galling and binding, cast internals that broke in hard use, and had serious safety problems. Otherwise I can't think of any.

Even the super-cheap ones like the old Savage 67 were good enough to be very serviceable riot guns when Uncle Sugar bought tens of thousands for the South Vietnamese in the 1960s, and the ones that ended up in US military arms rooms instead for whatever reason gave good service in decades of very hard use.

The US Air Force has Winchester Model 12 riot guns--as in Model 1912--made before World War II that the Army beat on for years before they were given to the Air Force and they are still beating on them and they're not wearing out or breaking.

It's very hard to wear out a pump shotgun. A very dedicated skeet or sporting clays shooter might do it--over decades, if not a lifetime. I did hear of someone wearing out an early-production Remington 870. He was some 1950s movie star whose name I can't recall, but he shot trap religiously--like 50k rounds/year. And it took HIM 20+ years to wear the receiver to the point where it cracked at the place where the shell stop was pinned in and couldn't be fixed.

Stay as far away from any Turkish shotguns as humanly possible. They aren't worth the metal they're made of.
>>
>>32478770

Mine was my grandfathers. It came with four barrels, two fixed choke magnum barrels, one interchangeable choke 2 3/4" barrel and one magnum steel barrel all 28" long.

I ended up selling one of the fixed choke barrels and chopped the other one for that barrel in the picture. Mag extension for that +2 and classy looking tactical shotgun.

I did regas the short barrel to run just about anything. Only shells I can't get to run reliably is winchester target loads.

I reenacted Gallagher today, got my mossman 590, stabbed a melon and blew it to bits, it even made a little rainbow.

oh cool, a scattergat thread

My LGS had a Benelli Nova for ~250ish dollars. I know nothing about shotguns other then the basic shit. is this a good deal. it was clearly used, but appeared to be in good shape. they also had a used wood furniture 500 for around the same price.
>>
>>32477754
I really want one, but am forever poorfag. :{

did you already buy it? how is it?
>>
>>32480772
I'm the anon who posted this, I found an image of what you meant, you just saved me 40 dollars that I was going to use to buy some stuff that goes on the barrel to put the swivel on, thanks goy
>>
>>32480848
Got a pic of the used 500? Also that's a good deal for the nova
>>
>>32481231
looked basically like pic related. receiver had a few nicks and scratches, but seemed sound mechanically. wood was scuffed in a few places (it was obviously a trade in). think the total was 240$.

Hey /k/. Noguns looking for input on a shotgun. I had my eye on the Mossberg Maverick 88 12 gauge because its' price point can't be beat.

But now I see people ITT saying it's shit. What makes buying the 500A worth it over the 88?

Pic related is what I was considering and at most,
>>
>>32479818
>>32479822
are these any good? local store has a special on them interested in maybe picking one up as a truck gun
>>
>>32481311
I haven't seen anyone saying there are any problems with the Maverick 88, and some people, myself included, prefer the location of the safety on the 88 over the safety location on the 500 (which is the only real difference between them).

Now, people can say the finish isn't as nice on the 88, but I can't tell much difference. And I've heard people say that the 88 has an aluminum receiver and a plastic trigger guard--but the 500 has those too.

The polymer stock and forend on the 88 don't bother me a bit. To me guns are tools, not works of art--and, once again, lots of factory 500s over the years have come with that exact same stock and forend too.

You want a 12 gauge shotgun? There's not a bit wrong with the 88. You won't break it without severely stupid abuse, and you won't wear it out in one human lifetime. If you have the flow I can think of no reason to pass it up, unless they've also got something else that you like more, that you'd rather get.
>>
>>32481311
They have less aftermarket support, but unless you're going to drop more on accessories than you did on the gun it won't matter.
>>
>>32481365
OK good. Thanks for the input. Good to hear there's nothing wrong with it. Do you use a specific type of shell? Hickock mentioned it holds 6 shells. Only 5 if using high brass.

Anyone else had issues with the safety on their Mossberg 500s?

The safety on mine will jump on if I rack it hard / fire anything

I've shot maybe 50 slugs and ~1,200 birdshot through it.
Mossberg sent a shipping label and will fix it free but I am waiting for the holidays to finish up
>>
>>32481391
The only thing I want to get attachment wise for the Maverick 88 is a shell holder located on the stock. Something easy to put on. Easy to use.

I'm looking for a shotgun with function over form in mind. Purely self defense purposes. Being able to pack 6x00 buck with 6 in reserve is something nice to have. If whatever problem I'm facing can't be solved with 12 shells, I'm doing something wrong or I'm in some serious shit.

Benelli M2 with a +3 mag tube extension. That's about it.
>>
>>32481468
Reee why is my shotgun doing this reeeee

I never fucked with the trigger group when it was outside of the gun btw. I read that can cause issues
>>
>>32481393
Shotguns are versatile and there are many types of ammunition for specific purposes, if that's what you mean. Slugs for hunting deer and similar animals, buckshot for home defense or close-range deer hunting, birdshot for birds and other small game, and so on.

Most shotgun shells are 2 3/4" long, but the 88's chamber will accommodate the 3" long "magnum" shells. The tube magazine holds five of the shorter ones, or four of the longer ones.

The 3" ones are mostly loaded to higher pressure and velocity and tend to kick a lot more.
>>
>>32481327
They are fucking garbage. Do not buy one.

My wife uses a Mossberg 500 with a rifled slug barrel with great success. They used to sell them as a set where you'd get a top rib smooth barrel for shot, and a ported rifled barrel for slugs. Not sure if they still offer the combo though.
>>
>>32489754
It's a fixed stock vepr 12 I removed the stock replaced with with an ace triangle side folder , ordered a set of wood rpk handguards , wooden AK pistol grip and installed them
