What are your predictions on future development of small arms?
What is the next technological advancement and/or what new types battlefields will small arms have to adapt to?
Energy weaponry, most likely lasers. Maybe plasma, but probably not.
Maaaybe rail guns but I strongly doubt it would be cost effective enough for adoption by any military outside of SOF.

There won't be any major advancement until some physicist comes up with a very small, very powerful energy source. Until then, it'll just be minor tweaks in bullet design, action mechanisms, and powders.

plasma cannot be fired without a magnet leading it all the way to the target
>>32416047
you think using lasers to cause tissue damage is more efficient than using magnets to move metal?
>>32416028
Lighter ammunition weight in the immediate future.
>>32416091
If only we had a way to throw metal at a target...
>>32416095
Energy efficient? Hell no. Cost effective? Hell yes.
>>32416028
More bang with smaller cases due to small tweaks in chemicals and the guns.
Lighter guns
So not much. The next real game change will come with the development of small energy storages that can power rail guns or lasers or whatever.
Autoaiming. Tactical information systems. Possibly even guided smart slugs. More handheld indirect fire systems, including drones.
Seriously, take a look at shit like the Trackingpoint rifle and tell me it's not the beggining of a new era of smart weapons. A tiny little gimble system inside a rifle could sway the barrel and correct for ballistics, and in a few decades I doubt anyone but the fuddiest or poorest of militaries will have regular, optical sights and not digital rangefinding ballistics-calculating thermal optics on their rifles

Auto revolvers.
Source- I'm making one.

Hopefully Gauss weaponry.
.50 caliber ar-15
>Hears someone downstairs
>Loud crash
>Roll over and grab ar from its blankie
>Pump 30 rounds through your wall
>TFW you just killed an intruder without ever leaving the bed

Powder powered projectiles will stay the best way to neutralize a large mammal, as long as we don't master the energy storage issue. For ballistic or non ballistic weapon.
