Personally I would shoot the guy and worry about the wall later.

BB shot or similar. Obviously adjust shot size to sturdiness of walls. If in an apartment building or similar, it's always going to be a shitshow. Best case scenario you'll get sued or accosted for just risking over penetration.

As far as I'm aware, there aren't any rounds that have sufficient flesh penetration and low wall penetration. Consider strengthening your walls if this is a concern.

IIRC box o' truth had 556 going through 3 interior walls, but only because they didn't test beyond that. It may have gone through 4 or 5 otherwise.

Hes right. It doesnt matter because any bullet that can kill a man reliably can go through two layers of drywall and still kill a man. Pick a caliber and projectile that can reliably pass the 12 inch test and practice so you miss as little as possible.

how exactly do you practice waking up in the middle of the night freaked out af and being able to hit people in the dark accurately without hitting the wall?

Pretty much anything that can penetrate skin will penetrate walls (unless concrete). I guess maybe a .410 shotgun with some really small shot, to reduce over penetration and possibly reduce amount of overall damage. Maybe something like a Taurus Judge so it takes up less space.

An AR15 in 5.56. It penetrates drywall less than anything like 9mm, 00 buck or .45 while still being extremely strong.

Despite this, it will overpenetrate. This is a fact that you will have to accept considering a bullet can go through skin, bone and organs. The idea is that an AR in a very low recoiling caliber such as 5.56 will be easier to shoot thus harder to miss with. This is unless you do not practice which you absolutely should.

Take ammo into consideration too with something like Speer Gold Dot or Hornady TAP. Don't get caught up in overpenetration. Instead, stick with one gun, practice with it until you're proficient enough. Key word being practice, buy a shot timer and run some drills.

More than capable of penetrating walls, but really most standard intermediate cartridges will do fine against drywall.
