Air softers also probably think things are "cover" when really it's just concealment.

All training leaves a training scar. ALL training. Air soft is roughly analogous to firearms at close range, and I think for CQB training it could be useful, and for cheap at home target practice I think it's probably also good. It would be shit for training with in the woods though. Effective range is laughable, and while leaves might stop airsoft pellets.. that's not gonna work against bullets though xD

Honestly though, this is some low quality bait. I don't think anyone here dislikes airsoft or paintball, just the autists and 12 yr olds that typify the sport demographics.

I did airsoft after I retired from the Army. Most of the other people there were vets too. I can tell you this. It can get pretty realistic. There was one setup that replicated an Iraq hostile area. One side were the taliban and one side were American military. Building clearing and setting up defensive positions, it almost felt like I was back overseas.

I only played one game of airsoft. It was at the end of highschool. They were all decked out in their fancy gear and expensive weapons. I was in jeans and a denim jacket. I made a "riot shield" out of a plastic bin top and duck tape. I didn't know that these rifles could punch through my shitty plastic. The game was to go until surrender, rather than the usual(?) rules.
Things were going awful for my team from the start, with one guy going off on his own to "flank" them. He walked into the enemy team and was captured.
Eventually everyone but me surrendered.After I realized that my shield was fucking useless I duck-taped a big ass piece of wood to the front. Since it was to surrender and I was out of BBs (they took our camp), I just decided to hit them with the piece of wood. I bullied 3 of them into surrender until they took my shield and one of them put one of their "guns" up to my head. They told me to surrender or they'd shoot, and I didn't believe them. I had a lot of fun in this situation, playing it off, shouting NEVER SURRENDER! NEVER SURRENDER!
He did end up shooting me and it hurt like a bitch. He put the damn thing right up to my head. I punched the guy in the nose and they all surrendered at that point.
It was actually a ton of fun before my team surrendered. I had marks all over my damn legs and arms from the fucking BBs.
I wasn't invited back after that.

I own a Krytac (which I've only used once because I bought it, took it out, and then remembered why I don't airshit anymore) and it's pretty nice but not necessarily "top end." You still need to sink a few hundred into mods if you really want to be competitive with custom AEGs, and that's not even getting into the shitshow that are $1k+ Polarstar rigs that shoot faster and further than any AEG can. TMs Recoil Shock guns are nice as fuck too, but aren't compatible with anything standard (even mags) and are a pain in the ass to get.

You can get some really decent guns for dirt cheap too. CYMA AKs are full metal and like $150, and they're powerful and reliable. Batteries have gotten tiny and cheap with the advent of LiPos too.

I keep thinking about getting back into airsoft again but the local community here sucks. All the good fields closed and it's just corporate fuckery that's overflowing with annoying little kids. I've been thinking about getting a GBB rifle, they're more fun anyway, and only playing on GBB-only days, which apparently have a much more mature playerbase.

Just got back from Vegas, went to Top Shot.

Really fucking fun. Real AR's and Glocks with sim rounds, hurts like a bitch though. They offer a laser tag style thing with something along the lines of a horse fencer attached to your stomach and a light weight vest that receives the laser hits, or full on sim rounds that hit like a bitch and hurt more so.

The problem is sim shit costs tons more then airshit.
You can break down airshitters into 3-4 groups:

12 Year olds who show up with 45$ guns and hunting camo sweatshirts.

16-21 yr olds who show up with chest rigs and AEGs worth a couple hundred bucks, just trying to have fun or passing time before they can enlist.

16-30 year olds who dress up like SEAL space shuttle door gunner rapid response ranger airborne operators. Generally the cocky ones.

Veterans and active duty, they have fun and seem to be the friendliest of the community.

I fall into the 16-21 category of waiting for ship date and wanting to have fun at a reasonable price.

I played airsoft for the first time last week. I am seriously considering dropping $300-$400 on an airsoft rifle now. It's really actually quite fun.

I'd say it's more of an irl cowadooty than any kind of actual war simulation like they like to pretend it is. These "team tactics" that you speak of didn't seem to be present, it was just a bunch of running and gunning.
It's pretty cool to be able to dress out in my camo and plate carrier though. I've never had any real use for that stuff other than collecting, so I felt like I gave it more of a purpose.

I've always assumed it was a childs game (mostly because of /k/ telling me it is), but the guys I was playing with seemed to be mostly 18-25 age range. A couple older guys too, like 50+.

Here's my Krytac MK2. Change the spring and some hop up modifications and it's pretty much the best AEG you could possibly want. Great for the money, competes with a lot of polar stars if done right. Check out Daytona guns, they're pricey as fuck but look sweet.
