I'm looking to get a bolt action rifle that I can hunt deer with using iron sights within 100 yards. Suggestions?

Go to a gun store, idiot
>>
>>32398195
Any one of the common mil-surp rifles.

>Lee-Enfield
>K98k
>Springfield 1903

I'm in between a fudd and one of you, so I want to know what enthusiasts think so I don't get scammed
>>
>>32398239
1. pick an appropriate caliber
2. go to a gun store and pick something out
3. stop being a retard
>>
Literally any rifle from .223 on up that has iron sights will take a deer from 100 and under. Even a smooth bore shotgun with slugs.
>>
>>32398239
go to a gunstore avoid anything remington. buy a caliber you can afford to shoot and not the one where hey this .375 magnum is only 300 dollars thats a great deal ill buy it. then learn its chambered in 5 dollar bills after.

I liked my pump action 760 in .300 savage for up close work. But even that got a fixed 4x scope on it eventually. I finally retired it when I discovered black powder was much more challenging and fun. Makes you really slow down and take the shot. Because even with a speed loader. That deer is gone by the time you get a second shot ready.
>>
>>32398195
Savage Axis.
>>
1917 is a really great milsurp rifle. I like it better than most older milsurp.
>>
>>32398195
Literally any bolt action rifle of sufficient caliber would work. Go to your LGS and handle a few, check some prices, and pick what feels right to you.
>>
>>32398195
sporterised karabiner 98, or mosin
>>
>>32398195

Basically any bolt action chambered in 223/556 or stronger cartridge.

CZ 527 FS

far better than any milsurp rifle desu

Check you local laws, some only allow for certain calibers. Heard of one state (Illinois?) that only allows for black powder, the bastards.

Laws aside, anything that is at least as powerful as a .357 Magnum will work.

The Winchester Model 70 "Sporter" is a really fucking good gun in any caliber you could dream of.
>>

truly a simpler time
>>
>>32398195
I hunt with an old Springfield model 1884. Seems to be pretty good and .45-70 is no push over.
>>
>>32398195
Check local laws before buying, some states have caliber requirements. On the chance you get to hunt somewhere there's a minimum caliber requirement, get at least a .25 caliber. Then look for the the mildest cartridge that'll reliably do the job for you. Don't step up to .30-06 if .308 is sufficient. And sure as hell don't step up to some magnum. On the off chance you'll hunt outside 100 yards, go with enough for a bit more than that. 7.62x39 or .30-30 power at a minimum. .260 Rem is probably an excellent caliber choice for a novice shooter. It's mild in recoil, shoots flat, is big enough to be legal for deer most places, and is only chambered in dollar bills.
>>
>>32398195
Something chambered in .700 Nitro Express.
>>
>>32398214
Yes, Mosin.

>>32402179
This anon is either a shit shot, blind, or got a battle weary rifle with a bore so shot out that it might as well be smoothbore. In which case he should feel honored that he has a rifle that played a key role in history, even if it has 33 million brothers.
>>
>>32398195

I had a savage hog hunter in .308 a while back. loved it. had the accutrigger which is pretty slick. very accurate rifle, 1.5 MOA at 400 yards (don't have any longer range to shoot at). it's a damn good rifle for the money. lightweight which is good for carrying around in the woods, but fair warning, it jumps around a bit when you fire so follow up is slow (i mean it's a bolt action anyway).
>>
>>32398195
> asking this question on /k/

All the fags here will tell you to get a nugget. Honestly any full-size calibre will cut it. If you can't hit a deer with irons at 100 yards you shouldn't be hunting anyways.
>>
>>32402179
check you stock fit, check for loose action screws, tighten screws in correct order, make sure barrel bands are tight, trim some stock with a dremel if its touching the tang, put some cork shim under the barrel channel, get the tip recrowned if its fucked, see if rifling is worn at muzzle, get a counterbore if so. something is fucked, you should be getting 2-3" groups all day and 1" if you tune the rifle right
>>
>>32398214
lmao 7.62x54R is shit for huntin'

Can they actually kill deer, though? And I don't just mean kill them after 2 days of bleeding out. I mean kill them on the spot.
>>
>>32398195
Literally anything that's the proper caliber for a Deer. 5.56 or .223 hot load is my minimal recommendation for that purpose. If you're a mediocre shot definitely go higher.

Otherwise you have a warped gun, or some made in China shit.
>>
>>32403342
Are you on crack? The round itself is an excellent hunting cartridge. Outruns .308 Wincest at the same bullet weights, even.

>Not that I'd take a Nugget hunting, though.

>>32403415
>Can they actually kill deer, though? And I don't just mean kill them after 2 days of bleeding out. I mean kill them on the spot.
With proper hunting bullets, yes. Lots of deer get killed with .308, each of those guns shoots a round more powerful than .308, each is available with good boolits, and each is well within its capabilities to hit minute of deer at a couple hundred yards with irons if you know your rifle and have practiced.
>>
>>32403415
8mm Mauser is a fucking massive round man. Larger than .308, you shouldnt worry about its ability to kill a deer lmao.

>>32403873
That picture makes me want to take a 7.62x54 rimmed, move the shoulder forward, and open it up to straight sides to play with slow-burning powders and heavy bullets in a scoped Nugget. I know it'd probably only net 200 fps, but it'd be fun.

I'm a fucking retard and can pop bowling pins at 100 yards with my nugget
>>
>>32403976
A bowling pin is pretty big. I thought that niggers were more accurate.
>>
>>32404782
A bowling pin is less in width than the 8" zone for whitetail so it's fine
>>
>>32403415

All of those rifles fire rounds that were subsequently deemed unnecessarily powerful for war. They're G2G
>>

I have a 40's Manlicher- Schoenaer that shoots amazingly, hair trigger and decent scope. Only problem is it's chambered for 6.5x53 so I have to reload all my rounds. I love the aesthetic of the full length stock though. Wanna get one in .308 someday
>>
Savage 11/111. Field and Stream near me had them on sale for 430 recently.

I've had one for a couple years in .30-06 and it's fucking awesome.
>>
>>32403415
Are you trolling? I shoot my deer with my sks, you can sure use any bolt action milsurp to hunt
>>
>>32403226
Stock is snug, the bore looks good, the screws are snug, barrel bands are so tight i can hardly get them off. I have never checked the crowning or the muzzle bore. Thanks anon, the gun looks amazing, matching parts, nothing looks wrong. The gun just shoots like shit, I can't hit anything, my dad can't hit anything, and neither can my brother.
>>
>>32403436
>Outruns .308 Wincest at the same bullet weights, even.

Really? I thought 54R was generally considered to be inferior to .308.
>>
>>32405164
My grandfather has one with a custom stock. Can confirm all of that.

This.
>>
>>32407377
No, according the velocities and weights on the wiki article, 54r nets about 1-300 fpe over 308. That being said, accuracy is another matter entirely.
>>
>>32398195
It's already been said, but I'll say it again. Winchester model 70. I personally favor the 3006. Even Alaska has is as the official state gun.
>>
>>32408325
The Winchester family already did that, hence the Wincest appellation.
>>
>>32409358
Yep. .308 is a shorter, fatter case. That gives it a bit more accuracy potential. Either cartridge is pretty accurate in a good rifle, though.
>>
>>32409678
Too bad there are no accurate 54R rifles, barring maybe the SV-98.
>>
>>32398195
Sporterized 7mm mauser., 98 action. I see them for as little as $100 and they are slick as fuuuuuuu

I was meaning more manufacturing tolerances of the guns themselves, but
