At that price range for new guns you're pretty much just looking at Hi-Point, at least as far as handguns go. You should save up another $100 and buy one of Canik's CZ copies if you're set on a handgun.

You can get a decent new shotgun for that price though, Norinco makes 870 clones that are sold in the US as the H&R Pardner Pump and the IAC Hawk.

Perhaps even keltec pf9 also fair game at this point of poor.

Sorry buddy, ur SOL. In cali all guns have a markup of 100-250$. Even high points cost 300 range. If u were anywhere else i would say get a P64(polish ppk clone) for 200$ but since u waited till literal last minute theres no way you can order guns now.

Try going to big 5 and getting a mossberg or a bolt rifle(i doubt it). Worst case you could probably get a 10/22. If u can find a gun store that sells older guns u might have a chance. For instance in simi valley, the gun shop here has plenty of older guns in your price range.

OP you should look around local gin stores used and consignment shelves and report back with what you find. Some guns I'd recommend:

-Shotguns
1) Almost any relatively modern single barrel single shot im 12 or 20ga such as the H&R topper. They tend to be very simple and endlessly reliable.
2) Used Winchester 1200/1300s, Mossberg 500, Maverick 88 and pre 2005 Remington 870s. Those are all rugged designs that can take a degree of neglect and tend to clutter old gun shops.
3) Chinese Remington 870 clones. Specifically H&R Pardner Protector and IAC 982 Hawk. They are super cheap but actually very well built. Just not nicely finished.

-Pistols
1) Used Hi-Points can be much cheaper than new ones and they are always under warranty no matter what. I'd be worried buying one in a private sale though.
2) Copies of the Russian Tokarev pistol, typically Romanian. They are crude but work well.
3) Ruger P Series. Extremely cheap and common but actually nice shooters. Out of production nowadays.
3) S&W Sigma. Dirt cheap due to shit tier heavy trigger. They can be modified though.
4) Any decent .22 pistol like a well used Browning Buck Mark or Ruger MKII.

-Rifles
1) Any decent condition .22 rifle. Maybe a new one. Classic Mossberg and Remington .22s are really nice though.
2) Classic milsurp Mausers, Mosins and SMLEs. Be picky though. Condition matters. Also sometimes old military rifles are cheap because ammunition is scarce.
3) SKS. If you find any SKS anywhere near $250 jump on it.
4) Hi Point Carbine. They are genuinely not bad at all.
