Some areas (like many military posts) don't allow hunting with rifles, so for folks like that they're pretty good. Also, slugs better at punching through thick brush than most spitzer bullets.

Hunting deer with a rifle isn't always legal where you want to hunt.

I'll probably pick up a dedicated slug gun (Savage 512) this summer, modern sabot slugs shoot flatter than .30/30, but I'm having trouble achieving ethical accuracy past 175 yards with my rifled barrel pump. Going dedicated slug will let me reach further, ethically.

These guys got it. Plenty of municipalities have shotgun only seasons and sometimes you're restricted to shotgun when shooting near inhabited areas. Rifled slug guns and sabot shells make the best of a somewhat crummy situation.

.30-06 still has a place in this world. It can achieve velocities that exceed what .308 Winchester can do at much lower pressures.
