The A-10 is a piece of shit that could be replaced with superior attack aircraft, and would have lost A-X if Fairchild weren't about to go out of business.

Also, post superior attack aircraft to the A-10.

The YA-9 was Northrop Grumman's submission to A-X. It handled better than the A-10, and could carry the same payload of 16,000 pounds.

As far as the resemblance to the Frogfoot, I'd reckon that it was a mere case of convergent thinking.

The point of the A-10 is the system, not just the gatling. Noobs see the shiny boomy bits, but the systems are what made Warthog such an effective tank and everything else killer. Mavericks, Rockeyes, other CBU and dumb bombs along with the cannon make A-10 the best CAS platform since Skyraider in SEA.

They racked up such a variety of kills in Desert Storm the crew chiefs had to get creative about kill stencils. Best one I saw taxi by had stick people.

I worked F-16 hot refuel at KKMC down the ramp from these guys. Warthogs are easy to repair and they made the most of that. Losses were light despite intense AAA and SAM opposition.

http://www.2951clss-gulfwar.com/photo_gallery/index.php/

Much love for gunships but they can't operate without total air superiority and are sitting ducks for MANPADS in daylight. A gunship is for colonial constabulary actions like Viet Nam (or Somalia, but idiots withdrew them too soon to avoid pissing off the wogs).

Both the YA-9 and -10 were developed before the 30mm cannon was put together; that's why the -9 doesn't have it. Had it not worked out (vibration, malfunction, etc) then either aircraft would have been armed with a pair of 30x163mm revolver cannons similar to an ADEN or DEFA cannon shooting the larger round at a much lower ROF.

Thankfully, BRRRRRRRRRT worked just fine and was adapted into the winning design. Had the YA-9 been picked it would have had the gun designed and installed into it instead, so don't take the gunless prototypes at face value.

That high attrition rate is because of failed air combat policy. The top brass just didn't know how to effectively handle SA-2s and a shit ton of AAA. Don't forget putting this dedicated attack jet in in an environment where it was defenseless against enemy fighters.

Plus, any aircraft would have a high attrition rate when it's doing 75% of all airstrikes in an environment full of SAMs, 37 and 57mm AA guns, and MiGs. The F-4s that replaced them took a beating from air defenses, too.

Bronco WAS better. They don't make them any more, though revivals are mentioned just long enough to be rejected. It was hard enough to get them built in the first place, then pussified Air Force jet jocks and USMC jet jocks got rid of them despite flying much more vulnerable helicopters which are far inferior in loiter time, speed and maneuverability.

Bronco had the fastest ejection seat in the US military because it punches straight through the canopy. If you see one at an airshow note the canopy breaker atop each seat.

Bronco is extremely easy to disassemble and cannibalize parts. That's terrific for fleet maintenance and battle damage repair. We had one belly land at Sembach (pilot error, tower tapes included the warning horn going off in the background) and because Broncos are built remarkably like their plastic models replacing the fuselage was a breeze.

The cargo bay was designed to hold paratroopers. The composite door can be removed in minutes for that role. Jump lights were fitted to signal parachutists. Cargo bay was great for hauling tools and parts to support other Broncos.

Bronco could lay tactical smoke. A simple oil pump and reservior for 1010 oil gets that done. The oil is dumped into the exhaust.

AIM 7 hardpoints were included. Bronco was being considered by the RAF as a helicopter killer but nothing came of that.

Overloaded with radios in a Navy attempt to kill it by excess weight, Bronco made a great FAC. Two FM-622 for relaying Army ground comms (you could relay one thru the other at different freqs), one HF 618 T-3, one ARC-164 UHF, and one Wilcox 807 VHF AM meant Bronco could talk to the world. It was the mainstay of Cold War NATO forward air control. There was nothing else like it.

If we had Broncos in A-stan they could have loitered over Marcus Luttrell and bros for direct radio comms while hosing Taliban with WP FFAR and 4xM60 gunfire. Helicopters a shit at altitude, can't loiter + sitting ducks for ground fire.

That's exactly my policy. Given the history of military mistakes, the smaller is better. Instead of building the Bismarck and Tirpitz, totally useless, the Germans could have built hundreds of U-Boots, far more efficient, but with all those ressources they could also have built thousands and thousands of planes from any type, and Great Britain would have been defeated even before the blocus was an option...

As always is said in all these threads the A-10 is no longer a relevant aircraft with its current flight profiles and mission planning.

With Sniper Pod integration and better guided munitions, the A-10's fulfill the same bomb taxi missions at Med-High altitudes that F-16, F-15, F-18 and B-1's all already perform except vastly slower which makes it an obsolete platform with it's current utilization.
>>
>>32386840
Experienced pilots can be more valuable than the planes they fly, the Soviet Union produced thousands of aircraft throughout the second world war yet only actually performed well during the last two years. You can't zerg rush with an air force, its failed every time so far.

Soviet pilots often had single digit flight hours before going into combat for the first time. Most of it was spent practicing take off and landing, and usually not with the plane they would actually go into combat with. They are kind of an extreme example.

Cute, but Warthog has higher intakes for better FOD resistance. Engine changes on A-10 are easy compared to pulling and pushing them inside a fuselage. They are also further apart so a disintegrated turbine or fan won't take both engines out.

When you consider aircraft, consider battle damage tolerance and ease of maintenence because they are vital components of the total package.

They didn't "make two new ones", they uprgraded two old airframes to "G+" configuration. That's very different because while it's easy to overhaul Bronco it's much less easy to tool up for new production.

I follow Bronco and other light aircraft issues since I worked on them at Sembach AB.

There isn't a large pool of used OVs because many were sold off as USAF TASS and USMC units were disbanded. They still operate globally under other flags.

Did you know that the engine parts are completely interchangeable, no mirroring needed? And you can slap just about any sheet metal on the thing and she'll fly. Most of her fuel plumbing is contained in her fuel tanks, so leaks aren't a big issue.
