As far as actual advice goes, just keep using that knife, anything actually "tactical" might go against you in court should you ever have to use it.

Maybe add a lot of tape right above the handle on the blade to avoid slipping onto it, like pic related.

Also in court say you put the tape on as you heard the guy in your house.

OP, knives are awful defensive weapons if you don't have the proper tool (you don't) or the proper training (I doubt you do).

You're far better off using a crowbar or baseball bat. Blunt trauma is effective and you don't need training to smash shit with a heavy stick. Plus you have a bit more distance between you and the attacker.
