Hey boys.

So I just arrived in Wyoming last week, and while I'm not living in bear country I have been eying a big cock sicker of a revolver for some time.

Anyone have experience target shooting/large game take down with larger handguns? I'm really, really wanting a S&W 460v, but I want some opinions first.

Tl;Dr talk me into or out of getting the 460v

>Wyoming
Whats it like, anon? Is it peaceful? not many niggers i'd imagine.
>>
Anything bigger than .44mag is stupidly useless against humans because of how big and unwieldy it is. S&W .460 is only useful for bears, target shooting, and getting a gun boner.
>>

Pick 1. I'm thinking of getting this BECAUSE I spend a lot of time up in the mountains, and I don't want to carry my rifle everywhere. There be bears here, lad.

>>32360525
Not a lot of blacks, but there are a fair share of mexicans. Don't know why.

I think it's really peaceful. Towns are mostly small, usually like 5-7k, most folk know eachother. Everyone waves at you when they drive by, the scenary is lovely if you live near mountains. No income tax, states rights are a thing, and every mother fucker has a gun in the back of their truck window.

Plus you can conceal carry with no permit. It ain't all roses, but it beats WA state.
>>
>>32360525
Not OP but man who's been there a few times.
There's not much of anyone there. It's like colorado and Oklahoma had a baby but colder and a near-microscopic population. Basically it's everything I've ever wanted. Planning to retire there someday.
>>
>>32360532
Ah fuck, I realize I fucked up my original post a bit. I'm not living in bear country per se, but I venture into it a lot.

I'm a fucktard.

Sounds like a great place. Well done, anon. I'm in the process for being a cop in a big fucked city but if I make retirement would like to end up in a place like that.
>>
>>32360532
This is absolutely incorrect.

The .460 S&W round is fantastic against humans precisely because it's one of the few handgun rounds that has power worth writing home about. Out of a 5 inch barrel, .460 S&W has more ft/lbs of energy than .223 out of a mid-length AR. In real terms, this means that the .460 falls solidly on the rifle side of the maxim about how "80% of people shot with handguns survive; 80% of people shot with rifles die."

The only downsides are the ammo being hard to find outside of the internet/expensive, which you can ameliorate by reloading, and the gun itself taking longer to learn on, which is acceptable given its other advantages.
>>
>>32360737
Anon, when you say harder to learn on do you mean for folks who are no gunz or that the revolver itself has a bit of a learning curve even if you're otherwise a good shot?
>>
>>32360514
Alaskan here. I got my 460 for "da big bears" and because everyone and their grandma has 44mag model 629 or blackhawk around here. I love mine but here is the way I see it:

Pros:
-The 460 packs way more punch than a 44mag
-The weight, porting, and grip make the gun surprisingly well compensated
-During the ammo scare I couldn't find plinker 460 ammo nor 44mag bear loads. I could however find 45LC and 454 in plenty of varieties. Since the 460 can also fire 45LC and 454 I always could find something to run in it.
-While it only has 5 shots it does count as a bludgeoning weapon as well.
-The gun-boner you get firing a 395 grain bear round is big enough to satisfy you wife from across town.

Cons:
-You may not find it comfortable to shoot. I have had plenty of new shooters fire the gun however and none found it too heavy or too painful, so your mileage may very.
-The 460 is several hundred dollars more than the 44 mag
-Actual 460 ammo may not be common in you're area and its bound to be more expensive that 44mag per shot.
-It is nearly double the weight of a 44mag (~44oz vs ~72oz).
-The extra weight makes it not a great choice for long backpacking trips and there is not a lot of holster options. Luckily I found the diamond leather "Guide's Choice" to be a good chest holster.
-While I can fire 44mag at the local indoor range, 460 is prohibited. Shooting outdoors at -40F sucks.
>>
Both, although if it's any solace, the 460V is a lot less punishing to shoot than the .500 and allows you to practice with .45 Long Colt if you're in the mood to shoot something light and easy.

Pros:
+Will kill anything that the bullet hits
+Feels badass
+Looks badass
+Makes my cock hard
+Handgun Hunter
+Reliable
+Accurate

Cons:
-Ow my wrists
-Oh fuck my wrists
-I think I just broke my wrists
-Only 5 shots, but you won't get past 2
-It's not a Ruger
-Why not just get .454 Casull?
-Heavy as fuck, hard to get accurate shots
-More power than a Deagle and also more regret
-Expensive
-Expensive ammo
-If a bear is charging at you in the woods, and you have to magdump your 460S&W at him, will anyone hear Anon being torn apart by a bear?

good choice.

if you haven't tried a .44 mag yet I'd recommend that more. It's got mild recoil and mild muzzle blast, but good power and very fun to shoot. ammo is plenty affordable and available, and the gun itself is a little better balanced in the hand.

Get it and you won't be disappointed. The five inch 460 S&W X-Frame is about as practical big bore handgun as you can get. You can shoot everything from the lightest .45 Colt loadings to the heaviest 460 loadings and everything in between. Recoil is very manageable with even the heaviest loads due to the revolver's weight and effective compensator.
>>
>>32363291

3.5" Performance Center is excellent for carry but recoil sucks ass and gets kinda old pretty quick.
>>
>>32361416
He can always just buy full power shit online

Buy 45 lc for practice but keep some full power stuff for when you need to use it.

Full house .460 S&W Magnum is everywhere and usually much cheaper than .500 S&W Magnum. Huge variety in types of loads to boot. Everything from 2000+FPS 200gr hollow points to bone busting 395gr hardcast.

If for some reason 460 is unavailable you can "settle" for .454 Casull.

>>32363596
Ive been thinking of getting a hand cannon for my first revolver. The only thing stopping me is the recoil.

I shot a rental s&w 629 which had quite a bit of kick. It wasn't really that fun anymore after a box of ammo. I developed a bit nasty flinch by the end of that box.

The compensated X-Frames are very soft shooting. Not at all trying to be a tough guy or mislead you. They're heavy of course but a small child could shoot one. The cvompensator is extremely effective and makes shooting even the heaviest loads a breeze. I dual wield my 5" X-Frames for shits and giggles at the range all the time. They're way easier to shoot well than my S&W 629. Used X-Frames are becoming more common on the market and can be had reasonably cheaply with patience. Got one of my 5" 460 for $850 brand new on sale.
>>
>>32361143
They even have a version in scandium which is obscenely light for what it is.
>>
>>32363671
I admit the 5" 460 does look attractive. I like that I can shoot 45 LC out if it. Ive shot my buddies 500 S&W 8.5" which was a real bruiser.

Fuck it, I'm heading to a gun show today. I'll pick up a 460 S&W 5" if I can find one for a decent price.

It is cold, boring, and the wind never, ever fucking stops blowing. Everyone is racist but there are only white people. People still laugh about the Laramie hate crimes. If you're far enough into the mountains you can do whatever the hell you want, up to and including:
>blowing up a $500 Le Baron with a full gas tank
>firing a howitzer
>emptying an M60 into washing machines
>cooking shitloads of meth

The biggest revolver I've used was the Ruger Alaskan .454 but I wouldn't really recommend one. S&W 460 is a good pick but they charge out the ass for performance center anythings.

Great thread. Pic is my 1999 Redhawk in 44 rem mag.

All my thoughts about getting a 480 Ruger and any other big ass cartridge went out the window when I knew what a 44 mag can do. Its cheaper, is legacy so it's going to be on the shelf, and it gets the job done without being unenjoyable.

they're the Heritage model by Eagle Grips.
the style is similar to the walnut "coke bottle" profiled grips S&W used on their guns from the 1950s and 60s.

Kieth Brown and Karl Nill make reproductions too, but much nicer and more expensive.

X frame grip frame is the same as the round butt K frames by the way

Still OP here, one more question for you boys:

460v or 460xvr? I'm trying to find the differences between the two, is the xvr more or less version 2.0 of the 460v?
>>
>>32365849
V is the roman numeral for five, denoting the 5" barrel

>>32360996
And you can use 45 colt and hotlod it to light .454 loads. Did it with my Rossi ranch hand and it handled well, that's my bear gun a ranch hand in 45 colt with bear rounds loaded
>>
>>32365849
I lied, one other question. Folks in the s&w forums are saying when firing the .460 round that even with ear pro it's incredibly loud- one dude even said he tasted blood after about 5 shots.

Are these guys just being pussies? Also, if you have to fire this gun without ear protection (say innamountains against a bear) am I gonna go deaf or acquire some tinnitus?

Fuck This

Get an AR Pistol in 458 Socom

Gonna be funner to shoot, better for followup shots, does the same damage. And costs the same depending on where you get it from.

(I mean technically I believe you can get an AR Pistol, then get a short barreled 458 kit).

458 is more ubiquitous than 460 right now and you can get up to like 500 or 600 grain slugs for it.

You get ~30% ammo capacity compared to normal AR-15 cap.
> 10 rounder = 3 shots
> 20 rounder = 7 shots
> 30 rounder = 9 shots
> 40 rounder = 12 shots?

I mean you can put 5 in a 20 rounder and just use that but at least reloading is a cinch.
>>
>>32365898
different ammo shoots differently.
a box of buffalo bore 360gr hardcast will leave your ears fine but bruise your thumb web unless you wear gloves.
a box of hornady 200gr ftx is comfortable on the hands but leave your ears ringing unless you double up on earpro. even then the concussive blast can give you a bit of a headache after enough shooting. it's worse indoors; outside not a real issue.

again, my favorites are Winchester 260gr Dual Bond. Federal 300gr Vital Shok is also allright.
>>
>>32366014
>458 is more ubiquitous than 460
.458 SOCOM uses the same diameter bullets as .45-70
.460 S&W uses the same diameter bullets as .45 Colt and .45 ACP.

you're talking calibers, not the amount of ammunition on the market

> common core issues

hard to know how many are available of 460sw or 458sc but I know 458 has a big following and the 460 just hides in the shadows of the 500sw

I mean you're gonna have to go online to get any of this shit, you're not going to find it at walmart. Maybe ask a local gun store if they can order some for you.

But I think if someone is going to commit to 2 grand for a hand cannon this is the better way to go. The AR pistol is going to weigh more but because of how revolvers are handled they're both going to be just as slow to level at a target. AR pistol has more going usefulness though.
>>
>>32366533
So I don't mean to call total bullshit on you here, but in the readings I've done no one recommends an AR pistol for bear defense when innamountains.

Also, I already have a full sized AR and if it's fairly negligible I'd rather add the large revolver to my collection.
