The benefits of an intermediate cartridge dissapear when you realize that a civilian operator can not afford high frequency fire. Their shots have to be deliberate and accurate. In this case the harder hitting rifle round works out much better, especially since it lends itself better to shooting through brush and hard cover.

If I only shoot a guy in the chest with 3 rounds of 5.56, does he sit behind cover for a bit and wait for the blood to drain out of his eyes then pop back out and shoot some more? If there was a guy who accidentally shot his foot with 5.56 a while ago and now it's healed, does he only need to be shot with three rounds? M193 fucking rips people apart out of a 20" barrel and is lighter and lighter recoiling than .308. .308 is only better at extreme long range or against large game animals.

It depends on your first shot accuracy. For both competition and combat, the benefits of intermediate rounds are the ability to "walk" your shots on target if you miss the first time. The recoil of a full power cartridge remove this possibility. For competition where placement is the most important there's no question. For combat use the military really is the best guide. Most hunting JHP loads would work well for soft targets and boost energy transfer to something comparable to .308 without the recoil. As for armor speed is key so AP 5.56 is usuallyore effective than slower, bigger .30 cal.

In terms of actual fighting, it is. Regardless of ammo and weapon, the vast majority of shooters couldn't hit a man-sized target at that range, and wouldn't have to because most engagements happen inside of a couple hundred meters.

Also, it's 5 shots to the (armored)body to kill with 5.56. 7.62mm takes 4 shots to the body (with armor on) or two shots to the body (with armor on) depending on what gun shoots it because CS has only one type of 7.62 ammo and damage radically differs depending on if an AK uses it or a SCAR 20 uses it.
