From my bookpile (reality or claimed to be):
Dear Mom: A sniper's Vietnam - Good
Chickenhawk (slick pilot) - Very good & sad
Making a killing (awesome PMC adventures) - Extremely recommended
Escape from Baghdad (PMC adventures the sequel) - Decent, not special
A long way gone (child soldierin') - Decent
The forgotten soldier - Timeless operator classic, must read
Storm of steel - Timeless operator classic, must read
SOG (americans owning & getting owned) - Educational
Acceptable loss (more Vietnam LRRP & Blue Apaches) - Good
Shake hands with the devil (UN ROE suck balls) - Educational
On war - Educational but overhyped
War is a racket - Interesting
The art of war - Classic, but mostly blatantly obvious

Sweet Jesus. I can't decide whether or not I want to know how bad it is.

No room for error is a solid read about the history of airforce special operations forces

seconding SOG, it's a great read

If it's anything like anything else he writes, it's an absolute trainwreck with no redeeming factors- not even humor value.

If you're up for fiction, read the whole Tom Clancy's "Ryanverse" series - the guy was frighteningly prophetic, almost all he predicted happened sooner or later (including 9/11).

Interesting tidbit - at some point Clancy was approached by a three letter agency and asked where did he get information on submarine propulsion engine he described in "The Hunt for Red October". He said he made it up, they were not amused and said he disclosed something that actually existed.

I've enjoyed his books back when they were written. Just don't buy anything written by "Tom Clancy and some-noname-here", they're crap.

I'm afraid we didn't get there YET (but look at what China's doing right now).

Though, Russia's going to shit much faster than I thought it would be, and don't forget that Clancy's books were written when it looked for a brief moment like they can clean up their act - which they didn't.

I'm also waiting to see how his prediction about war with India is about to turn out.

I enjoyed John Plaster's books a lot. I also liked Dalton Fury's books, fiction and non-fiction. Unfortunately he's passed away recently so I doubt his series is getting continued.

You would be hard pressed to find a guy more operator than this dude.

>mfw you will never serve 7 years with SF nam
>mfw you will never win the medal of honor by fending off a platoon sized attack by yourself after you've been shot through the chest to save your critically injured squad
>mfw an NVA spy posing as a prostitue will never try to kill you by putting a poisonous snake in your shower

Shadow warrior. The best parts of the book are not his killing Che mission but this is the center piece of the book as the first one written by someone involved. He did time in Vietnam with one Hollywood style helicopter raid being the most intense. He knew a lot of big name CIA spies and provides his own stories of them, some tragic like Will Buckley.

He also had beef with Col. Oliver North calling him a amateur who was in over his head and John Kerry who grilled him during the Iran contra trials.

Hey guys, I'm going on a road trip this coming saturday and I dont have anything to read. Ive got plenty of non-fiction books about military and history, but I want something that will suck me in and allow me to get out of the car and ignore my numb ass cheeks.

Can I get some suggestions please? Preferably something with amazon prime shipping so that I can have it before leaving. Thanks /k/, I really wish I'd saved those dann reading lists that I used to see all the time.

i dunno if it'll suck you in, but I really liked reading Gene Wentz's book, Men in Green Faces. It's a SEAL-wank book with the main character named after himself and described as "the deadliest man on his team", but it's pretty fun.

That spy part with the Chinese chick was even more cringeworthy than the "romance" between the weather station guy and the Icelandic chick in Red Storm Rising

Tom Clancy's Shadow Warriors is non-fiction and a solid read.
