To understand how mechs will work on the battlefield you have to figure out what they're good at.

I figure they'll end up basically being up-sized infantry. Something that's extremely adaptable and can maneuver in terrain without bogging down as much as tracked/wheeled vehicles. Adjustable profiles, quick changing munitions, and probably sophisticated sensor suites.

I doubt they'd be particularly survivable - probably only armored up against 20mm or so, but they'd still be fantastic regardless. They could carry 120mm anti-tank rifles like actual rifles, and switch to a 20mm autocannon the same way a soldier might trade an M4 for an M14 if it happens to be worth doing.

So basically just upsized infantry with more armor and weapons.
