>I don't have a good OP image edition

Going to get a Howa 1500.
Undecided on 6.5CM or .223.
Here, .223 is $0.70/round, and 6.5CM is $1.50+/round.
This is my first rifle as well, but not my first time using a firearm (ex-rifleman)
I intend to use it for shooting targets at 300m or more, as well as hunting should I get the opportunity (mainly feral pigs, foxes, rabbits, feral birds).
I'm leaning towards .223 being the better choice.

What do you guys suggest?

Replace the sights with something worthwhile. You don't even need to go all out spending +$100 on some Trijicon HD's. A Dawson fiber optic front and blacked out rear for $80 or a set of black on black Defoor Ameriglos will go for $45.

.223 and 6.5cm aren't comparable. 6.5cm is basically a better .308.

If you never want to shoot anything bigger than what you have listed and no further than 400-600m .223 is fine.

Close enough for government work. Expect a maximum difference of 3 inches at any particular point in your arc and you'll probably be fine.

We used 5.56 ACOGs for M240s and made it work somehow, and those are lot more different from 5.56mm than 5.45mm.

I fired my 10/22 for the first time ever yesterday. It had more stoppages than times I got it to fire. Whenever I loaded the magazine, it would fir the first round, but go "Click" on the second. I would extract that round, it would fire the third, and go click again for the fourth. It got to the point where it would go "click" for every round.

Is it the ammo or my rifle? (Yeas I did oil it beforehand and I even took apart the trigger group to oil it afterwards). The ammo I'm working with is "Federal Spitfire .22lr" thats at least 3 years old (my dad said to use up the "old ammo" from the basement before using the ones I just bought).
>>
>>32344454

>>
>>32344454

>>
>>32343136
Lots and lots of fouling, possibly you won't extract properly in a semi auto. Otherwise it's fine.
>>
>>32344454
Check the unfired cartridges to see if the firing pin made a dent near the rim of the cartridge. If they were dented, it's the ammo. If there's no dent, it's the rifle.

>"and stop shooting guns without muzzle devices in the dark, Anon, it's bad for your vision."

Explain.
>>
>>32344754
Muzzle devices, as a rule of thumb, guide gasses away from sight-line (IDK what's the proper term in English). Basically gases don't flash in the area where your vision is concentrated.
>>
>>32342148
30-06 for targets honestly, but if you're shooting at rabbits and birds even .223 is probably overkill if you plan on eating them

>>32344294
Yes. It's a steal at that price. It's slightly cheaper in materials than the base 9 but the trigger and slide safety are improved. It's a dramatically better pistol than the typical $300 market and most of the nitpicks can be fixed with a screwdriver.
>>
>>32344778
That's only a temporary issue. It will play havoc on your short term night vision, but I've never seen it described as bad for the eyes overall.

It's the same as turning on a super bright flashlight in the dark and turning it off again.
>>
>>32344587
How long do you think a Vepr12 would be able to run for, if at all, on blackpowder?
>>
>>32344754
Suddenly having a jet of fire light up your vision in the dark kills your night vision for 30 minutes. The CAR-15 is a good example of why that's bad. It won't actively "hurt" your vision but it won't be pleasant.
>>
>>32344787

What's what I wanted to know. Thanks, mate.
>>
>>32344787
>It's the same as turning on a super bright flashlight in the dark and turning it off again.
Yes. And when firing repeatedly, fucks with you like you're getting strobe-raped in the eyeballs.

It shouldn't perma-damage vision just like watching TV in the dark won't. Just increases strain and makes your eyes get tired earlier.
>>
>>32344816
Yeah, it's a temporary issue, so nothing wrong with a bit of shooting in the dark. Ease off the autism and let anon shoot when he wants.

.243, .222, .22-250. You can find a lot of Yugo mausers chambered in these durr rounds. Neat gun/round combo. Also, look at your states definition of primitive weapons and see if you can use cartridge rounds. I live in LA and use a .444 H&R single shot if I don't feel like breaking out the BP.

Tikka/Ruger if you want new. If you can find a deal online or at a pawnshop, BARs and BLRs are sexy as fuck as well as Remington auto loaders/pumps. Stay away from new production Rem700s though. Bonus points if you find an old one for cheap and turn it into an m40.

What's the process of purchasing a firearm online?
Specifically the part where it gets sent to an FFL dealer.
>>
>>32348174
I usually talk to the FFL first and let them know about the gun. It gets shipped to them, they hold it until you come in. You fill out the 4473 and they call it in. If you're not a criminal you pay the transfer fee and walk out with your new gun. One good thing about talking to the FFL first is asking the price of their transfer fee before you ship it to them so you don't end up having to pay $30+

I can't speak for other websites, but Bud's gunshop has a list of approved FFL's sorted by distance to you. They also list their last reported transfer fee.

You don't need to notify them in advance, just buy the gun, wait for the FFL to call you when it comes in.

I can't speak for all FFL's, but my guy is great and calls me as soon as the gun comes in. Meets during or after business hours as well.

To clarify: the FFL's listed in green require no advance notice. The ones listed in black may require advance notice.

For 600 or less I'd recommend the Ruger American Rifle with the packaged Vortex 3-9x

Lightweight, good trigger, and great glass for deer hunting. Plenty of YouTube videos showing it shooting easy 1 MOA groups. The only downside is that it has a light barrel to save weight, so your accuracy might suffer if you start putting a bunch of rounds through it fast at the range. For hunting it's a great package tho.
>>
>>32348468
The Savage Axis is also at the same price point with a packaged Nikon scope. Heavier barrel profile for sustained shooting and a traditional 4 round internal magazine (Ruger American uses a rotary 4-round. It works perfectly fine but it's unorthodox)

Hey /k/, I need some help here:

Long story short, I got a Yugo Mauser. It fires great and performs fine, but there's something wrong with the front band. The rear portion of it slides on perfectly with a bit of wiggle room, but the front portion (circled in red in the picture) absolutely refuses to budge. It's way too tight, and you basically need to force it on. And even if you force it, it doesn't go all the way on resulting in the button not clicking into the hole on the band and it jiggling off after firing the gun.

How the heck do I fix this? Do I need to shave the metal down somehow on the inside of the band where it's too tight?

Wipe it down with a gun oil wipe after you shoot it. Just start aggressively rubbing it with said wipe each time you take it out and it'll start to fade away.

You fix it with a rag and a lot of CLP.

You keep it from happening by not putting it away dirty or handling it without wiping it down.

If you are going to be storing it for more than a week between shooting/handling, either humidity-control wherever it's at (inb4 under your bed) or using a long-lasting corrosion inhibitor on the metal like Barricade or some other silicon-containing oil.

How does /k/ feel about buying used hand guns? I've been browsing Slickguns and armlist for a bit right now and see some good deals but with no transfer of warranty or full knowledge if they didn't fuck up gun smithing I've been hesitant. Also how much would you knock off a good conditioned handgun that doesn't come with a warranty?
>>
>>32351472
Know what you're getting into. If it's old milsurp, some idiot conscript was rough with it and put plenty of rounds through it. If its a police trade in some idiot deputy was rough with and put plenty of rounds through it. Thats why you look over all the pictures carefully and inspect every part of the gun carefully. A worn spring or random moving part is nothing, they're supposed to be replaced with use. A cracked or bent frame is a serious issue.
>>
>>32351472
I've always had good luck with secondhand guns. I inspect for clean riflings and general signs of wear at the meetup. I detail strip and clean them before a range trip. If I'm paranoid, I'll take it to a gunsmith to have him put some go/no go gauges in to check headspace. If it's going to be a carry gun I put at least 250 rounds through it before it ends up in my pocket.

Ok I doubt this anon will see it, but anyone feel free to chime in.

I want to get a Howa 1500 in .223.
There is a "mini-action" version, which is more purpose built for .223.
However, it may be up to $300 more than just buying the regular 1500 chambered in .223.
Should I just get the normal 1500?
>>
>>32362267
i would think so, the purpose built mini action probably saves on weight and offers not much else in benefit, but i dont know
>>
>>32362275
Alternatively, I could get the "ultra light" version for $500 (20" light barrel I suppose). This is lighter than the "sporter" barrel.
I hear overheating may be an issue
>>
>>32362283

>>
>>32362311
Mainly bench shooting yeah.
Just for fun, no competitive use.
I wouldn't mind hunting with it too should the opportunity arise.

I could just get 308 or 6.5x55 in the full sized 1500
>>
>>32362311
Sorry let me just follow up.
Why is a varmint barrel heavy, and why is a sport barrel light?
Wouldn't it make more sense to have a heavy barrel for target shooting (lots of shooting) compared to hunting (where you may only fire once)
>>
>>32362332
because sport barrels are meant to be carried around while hiking during the hunt, and varmint barrels are meant to be used sitting in place on a table popping off gophers in a target rich environment.

if you are going to be shooting repeatedly without much time between shots, the heavier barrel is better becasue as the barrel heats up, the steel becomes more flexible and your groups tend to get larger, so even if you had a tiny little rodent in your crosshairs you might miss by an inch if you were using a light barrel and had just shot 10 of his buddies in quick succession
>>
>>32362447
So how quick are we talking for the barrel to heat up?
I'm thinking 6 rounds per minute max for aimed, effective shots at a range.
Would a regular thickness barrel be appropriate for that, or would a varmint barrel be better?

Also I just checked:
Howa 1500 .223 is 6.9" bolt
How 1500 .223 mini action is 6" and "12% lighter"

Should I just get whatever is cheapest between the Howa 1500 and the Howa 1500 mini?

Thanks so much for the (you)'s btw

Looking to buy an ar or ak for a while
Seeing as trump just got elected should I skip the winter sale opportunities for this year and wait another year
Or should I wait longer to see if we can get those trade bans lifted from Russia
>>
>>32362459
even once your gun heats up and the groups open up, you still have a consistency. its just a larger spread. so as long as you arent shooting past the limit of your gun youll be fine. if your targets are large or close enough it doesnt matter if your groups open from 1" to 4"

theres always a compromise, so figure out your intended use and pick according to that and you will be happy. weight vs heat etc. also keep in mind light barrels heat up but also cool down faster. learn your gun, you can feel the barrel heat with your hands and correlate that with your groupings at the range. so when you are in the field you will know what to expect and when you can start shooting again.

6 rounds a minute isnt bad at all and your barrel wont heat up too much, but how many minutes are you talking about? 5 minutes (30 shots) and your barrel is going to start getting hot, 1 minute with 6 shots, your barrel will just be warming up

i would just get whatever is cheapest, but there is a lot to be said for light weight. try holding them both at the store and see which feels better. lighter is always better when you are carrying it around. if you dont foresee walking around for hours or miles with it, or shooting offhand standing for long periods of time, then maybe its really not that important
>>
>>32362493
Also I should mention why I won't get a mission
Mosin
I want a worth while gun that's going to be fun for a long time, I don't have allot of money to splash around and I don't wasn't to spend it on anything less than exactly what I want
Once things get better I'll get into bolt actions
>>
>>32362502
>lighter is always better when you are carrying it around. if you dont foresee walking around for hours or miles with it, or shooting offhand standing for long periods of time, then maybe its really not that important

I hear this a lot. I carried service rifles and machine guns with personal webbing and armor all when I was in the army. I personally don't think I'd have an issue hauling a heavier barrel, especially given that I could use a sling (unlike in a tactical environment).
The only issue I could see is accuracy in standing or kneeling firing.

I'll have a look at the gun store next week when I apply for my license (just how it work here in Australia), in which case I can get a permit to acquire it on the day if I like it.

Thanks for the advice man! Really appreciate it. I'm new to firearms aside from service weaponry (which obviously taught me very little outside the scope of standard military use)
>>
>>32362522
true its not that you CANT carry a heavier rifle, what i was trying to convey is the fact that it is just sooo nice when your rifle is light as fuck. you really notice and appreciate it.

do you plan to mostly target shoot or also hunt? and hunt what? some other rifle brands to take a look at in similar quality and price range: savage 10, savage 12, savage axis, remington 700, ruger m77, ruger american rifle. all great rifles. howa makes good stuff
>>
>>32362560
It'd probably be 95% target shooting. I have nowhere to hunt here (it must be on privately owned property as far as I know, with permission from the land owner).

Remington 700 is expensive as fuck here, so are Ruger M77's. Ruger American looks alright, but the Howa is a bit cheaper. Savage Axis is affordable. If it's worth anything, I like the appearance of Howa better
>>

>>32362595

>>32362605
And as far as that mini-action 1500 vs normal 1500?
Mini action being 0.9" shorter and 12% lighter, and likely $300 extra compared to the regular 1500's package.
Just go the normal 1500?
>>
>>32362620
yeah i dont think its worth the extra money for a 12% lighter rifle for your purposes

theoretically a shorter action could give you quicker bolt throws but that is really splitting hairs. i dont think thats worth the extra $300 especially with your intended use.
what options do you have down there? do the shops have any different barrel lengths?

dont forget ammo weight and quality will play a large role in accuracy as well. try different weights and types of ammo and have realistic expectations. you arent going to cloverleaf groups with steel case russian ammo
>>
>>32362668
It's just the one store that's semi close which is by far the cheapest. There's a HBar 20" 1500 for $600, and ultra light 20" 1500 mini-action for $500, and I could buy a HBar barreled action in the mini-action for $720 (then $100 for a stock and $80 for a rail).

1500 just seems like the best choice. I don't think bolt speed is going to matter too much. It'll be my first rifle anyway, so I'll be shit to start with no matter what.
>>
>>32362679
i think out of those options youll like the HBar 20" for $600 the most for your intended use. it will be the most accurate over extended shooting sessions and its not like it cant crossover if you ever do get into hunting. plus it will have a tiny bit more of that ever important "tactical snipery" look
>>
>>32362700
I think that's the best option tbqh

I have been searching stores for a little over 2 years all over northern Illinois and I have never seen it on the shelf. Everywhere I've asked, they say they don't order it at all, so I'm stuck with the 8 cases I have, IMR 4064, and some 169 grain 308's.

I'd keep an eye out online and see if you can snag some for a halfway decent price from gunbroker.

I believe it is the P8. Basically it just makes the safety operate differently than all the other models.

German military and police only, no civilian sales. I'm sure someone has one somewhere though.

Probably ammo, maybe rifle. Buy some high-quality ammunition and test it, it'll be a couple bucks and it'll tell you what's causing the problem (if it still happens, it's the rifle. If it doesn't it's the ammo).

Not in NC, according to google.

Private Sales in North Carolina. North Carolina law prohibits the sale or transfer of a handgun to a person who has not obtained a permit to purchase a handgun or a concealed handgun permit. ... See the North Carolina Licensing of Gun Purchasers or Owners section for more information.

usually the carbines go for more money, i see carbines go for somewhere around $300-$350. 91/30s around $250. My local shop has them for $189.99 right now, so your location matters...

yours is in the prewar stock with screwed in sling swivels, which is nice. ask $350 and see what happens, maybe youll get haggled down to like $275 or something.

the tula made ones tend to go for more than the more common izhvesk ones, which yours is. i think with all of the factors combined i would put a price of $350 on it and wait to see who bites, or if looking for a quick sale just ask $200.

i got mine for $60 back in 2005 so maybe i have an artificially low valuation of them in my head, but personally i wouldnt buy your rifle for more than $200. but i think other newer collectors dont remember those days and have no problem paying more than that
>>
>>32367399
thats not a bad price, depending on condition. i think aim surplus had israeli trade ins for like $400, but the finish on them was pretty beat. FN belgium made ones are probably going for $800-$1000 and up in most places for one in like new condition

You can run 303 through a 30-40 sizing die. I've made plenty that way. Your brass will be short though, so you'll have to adjust your seating die. I'll see if I can find some I have made up and post picture compared to 303 and 30-40 together

Yes, but you will need to buy two separate mounting systems. Traditional scope rings that will mount to your Marlin, and a mount that will connect to the rail on top of your AR.

The rim on the 303 british is thicker than the 30-40, so the neck appears slightly higher, but that's because they're leveled at the bottom of the case. I know .22lr is everyone's favorite controversial bugout/survival rifle ammo--cheap and you can carry a shit ton of it, good for anything up to deer (maybe), but you need a really good shot to take deer and anything large, and it's pretty terrible at self-defense.

Why don't more people talk about using .223 instead--but in a lightweight survival gun rather than a heavy AR? It's cheap and plentiful, lightweight enough to carry a lot, but actually viable for self-defense and a little more realistic to use on deer and such.

Well, I know that. But I'm thinking that it might be worth the tradeoff in self-defense. If you have to bug out for whatever reason, and all you bring is a .22, you're pretty fucked if you have to fend off robbers or looters. Also, I know .22 technically can take deer, but it's really not good at it, you need a perfect brain or heart shot. .223 makes it a little more realistic.

Does anyone know of a good cheap, small, lightweight bolt action .223? Any time you try to search for .223, all anyone wants to talk about is fucking ARs

>>
Would trying to CC an FNX-45 Tactical be completely retarded?
>>
>>32376368
The DA/SA gun might have a lighter trigger, and the nature of the trigger pull (being a release of the sear, rather than a slight cocking and then release like a striker gun has) may be different as well.

The travel of the trigger may also be shorter with the DA/SA, as well as the resistance felt during uptake.

All of these thing could make the gun easier/harder to ND than a striker fired weapon.

Yes, and they do. FFLs are required to keep such records for 5 years, and in police states like California they report all transfers to a registry. All ATF items need a serial number for their registry as well, so if you wanted to register a lower without a serial as a SBR you'd need to give it one.
