I don't know about Europe but pre 9/11 America was very easy. Now, I think you could still do it pretty easily.

There was a guy once who wanted to prove a point so he made a 24kt gold derringer and wore it around his neck like a necklace. The security guard actually complimented him on it as he walked through the metal detector.

Post 9/11 that would not work anymore but there are other ways. Personally, I just refuse to fly commercial.
