Generally young service members cant grow beards and they just look like ungroomed teenagers with peach fuzz and chin pubes. Operators can grow beards because usually they became an operator after being in the service for 4-8 years or sometimes more.

And young service members are usually fucking idiots because of flawed training and doctrine. So they need to have their hand held. Ive had to punish a Marine for not showering weeks at a time.

In the modern military? Beards stopped being a thing when gas and chemical warfare came around, can't get a seal on your mask when you have a beard, so beards had to leave.

Operators get to operate operationally because in the middle east their beard helps them "blend in" , or unofficially, they get to do what ever the fuck they please because operators and there's nobody around to bitch at them / gives a fuck about the grooming standard.

Depends how you define operator?

If you mean special forces guys then yes beards are operator. Seeing as we have been fighting ragheads for the last 15 years and beards are a symbol of wisdom and maturity in their culture then they grow them. And the whole thing about it helping you to blend in to the population when needed.

If you mean day to day tactical readiness then not really. The Japanese talk about Bushido and living as a warrior, ever vigilant. Smoke a pipe from the corner of your mouth in case an attacker tries to ram it down your throat. have short hair in case someone tries to grab it in a fight. Have things you can throw at an opponent to give you time to escape or grab a better weapon.
