There was. I have a really old pair (mid 80s I think) of pants in decent shape, it isn't ripstop but %100 cotton. More modern pieces seem to be mostly ripstop

yes, there were two main materials used, commonly referred to as "winter weight" (heavy) and "summer weight" (light). Summers were way more comfortable. Most troops would only buy summers and use cold weather gear with them during the winter because winter weights BDU's were shit.

t. Joined the Army back when BDU's were still a thing.

intredasting. I have this aversion to ripstop cotton poly blends. hold that shit against the sun and it looks like a gill net - that#s how much sun is coming through. also, the blend kinda doesn't offer any advantag; when wet, it will suck just as much as regular cotton.

Here's a pic of the old pair of pants compared to the new production Propper brand on the left. The old pairs fabric is like blue jeans, and the new one is ripstop and looks grid-like, and is a lot thinner.

The ripstop BDUS didn't last fer shit.... they faded and wore holes pretty quickly.
