Forged receivers (upper or lower) are ideally shaped for light weight and strength. Billet is gucci stylistic shit for dadsmoney dummies, they do not change any function or strength unless they have an added bolt stop or something.

Bought pic related a few days ago. Going to be getting an upper once my paycheck rolls in. I have a few questions.

1)is there any advantage to carbine length over mid length?

2)what barrels finish is the best, are there any I should definitely not get? Stainless steal barrells kind of look retarded if you ask me. Makes it look like a paintball gun, but if it makes it more reliable I'll look into one.

This is my first AR and I'm looking for something that's shootable and reliable, but not necessarily amazing. Orignally planned on buying an M&P sport and forgetting about it. I jumped on the lower because the price was right, PSA seems to have a good reputation and the magpul handgrip just looks much more comfy to me, but now I kind of feel like i'm in over my head when it comes to choosing an upper. Not looking for something I have to build piece by piece as I don't have a vice or any tools of any sort, but if I have to buy a charging handle and a Bolt Carrier Group and a rear sight I can do that.

i took down my axis buck this year with 55gr hornady soft point. he didnt take a step. it was about 150 yards, 20inch barrel with a suppressor so it wopped him hard. i was surprised how well the bullet held together. it was lodged in between his ribs and his hide. i ended up shooting him twice just to be sure. the second shot was like 1 second after and he was DRT.

Depends on the M&P, I had an M&P15 OR and I could not get the gas block off. I tried as hard as I could with a bunch of different punches and hammers and it would not go. I just bought a new upper and sold the M&P one for a decent price

I'm pretty set on 18" but god damn what profile do I get

I like lightweight for lugging around, but I'm afraid of heating it up and more specifically making it sag a ton with a suppressor

And there's a heavy barrel but I dont want to arbitrarily add weight when I'm never going to do mag dumps or shit with it

Look for a 16" barrel, mid length gas, 1:8 twist (1:7 is ok too), m4 feed ramps, chrome lined and decide if you want a free float barrel or A2 front sight.

Carbine length gas is acceptable if you get a good deal but it probably will require a heavier buffer to keep it from being overgassed.

Stainless steel barrels don't last as long but are desirable for precision shooters because they retain accuracy better as they wear.

My LGS is a cabelas, they don't really stock stripped lowers. If I want something special like a honey badger lower, they would have to order it from spikes or another distributor, and spikes' website says any new orders could take from 8-10 weeks due to demand.
