are ballistic helmets even worth it? They seem to only stop shrapnel

If you're going to wear any armor at all a helmet should be the first thing you go for.

Depends on whether or not there is anything in your head you need to protect. By the looks of things, no you're fine.

Considering there are a metric fuckton of pistols in the US. If you're far enough away, there is a good chance at stopping a rifle round too.

This may be a stretch but there are tons of videos on youtube from the middle east of US soldiers being saved from snipers by there IIIa MICH and ACH helmets.

Sure it won't do anything at 50yds, but at 600yds maybe.

In previous major conflicts, artillery & air strikes cause the majority of casualties. Also, a modern helmet has a decent chance of preventing an intermediate round from penetrating fully at long range and especially if it doesn't hit squarely head on.

As a civilian? Hell no. Wear earpro headset and whatever you think is fashionable. If you're super rich tryhard and have NVG's, just get a bump helmet to mount them, 1/10 the price.
