Wrecking the mainland would never have happened. The best they could have hoped for was USA deciding that it wasn't worth feeding men into a meat grinder to push them out of the Pacific and making peace. That's all Japan could have really hoped for. The fuckup at Midway ruined all hopes for that though because it was a huge moral victory for USA.

The Shinden was an interesting plane, much like the Me 262, neither were, or would have been, produced in enough numbers to make a difference to the outcome of the war but they were both the result of desperate militarys looking for innovative ways to overcome the numerical disadvantage they faced.

Also, Japan had no good pilots left to pilot them anyway.

That's wrong. What Japan was hoping for was that the Soviet Union would agree to the Japanese's repeated requests for the USSR to act as a mediator of Japan's conditional surrender to America. The Soviets responded by declaring war on Japan, with the intention of capturing as much Japanese territory as possible for themselves. Japan realised it had no chance of surviving at this point. They could either surrender to the socialists, who would definitely dispose of the Emperor; or surrender to the more pragmatic Americans, which had higher odds of leaving Japan less drastically fucked up and still with an emperor.

The soviet declaration of war on Japan was what actually initiated their unconditional surrender to America, not the second nuke. The second bombing was could have been avoided entirely, had Japanese government not dragged its feet about explaining the situation to the Emperor. To this day, there is still some resentment towards the Japanese government for pulling the wool over everyone's eyes with regards to the reality of the state Japan was in, and the subsequent unnecessary civilian deaths. Godzilla movies tend to show the nuclear spawned lizard killing the japanese prime minister a lot.

"Tried" isn't "wrecked." Tossing a handful of bombs on San Diego would be great for propaganda, but that's about it. They already ran out of fuel while playing defense and needed to support their wars in Asia at the same time. It would've taken many years to pacify the co-prosperity sphere and develop the logistics to make any real strikes against the US.
