Is there any point in having removable magazines on bolt action rifles?
It's not like you are quick firing a rifle that is made for accuracy and shots that count.
Having removable mags on bolt guns is as useful as having fixed mags on modern semi auto guns.
What does /k/ think?
usually mag removal is for cleaning and maintenance only.
though civilian guns don't feed by stripper clips. so you usually take the mag out to load it by hand.

Could have and not need or need and not have

It's good for hunting. Just pop the mag out when you're in your car/truck or transporting the rifle, or where you aren't permitted to have it loaded. Pop it in when you need to shoot/are legally permitted to have your rifle loaded.
The other advantage is that you don't have to worry about damaging the bullet tips by loading and unloading them from a fixed mag.

It makes reloading less of a pain in the ass. What more reason would you need?

Another idea is having a couple mags with different loads in them. If you have a .30-06, you have a lot of options for loads- so have one loaded mag with cheaper 150 grain soft points for durr, and another mag with 200 grain Noslers for bigger stuff.

Personally I think that there should be more rifles like the Lee Enfield with a removable magazine but the ability to load stripper clips, makes transporting easy and loading fun.

with a one piece scope mount it's a pain in the ass to reload cartridges one-by-one.

>Is there any point...
The largest rifle competition in the nation requires rapid fire (with a mag change) and allows bolt rifles in the "Match" class. There are old salty dogs who run stripper clip fed Remington 700s and Winchester M70s but they are the exception rather than the rule.
Ditto the PRS competition which is rapidly growing.
>but competition isn't real.
It's more real than range/mall ninja fantasies, and competitors shoot more rounds per year than anyone else.
Think about how many more Reds He could have killed with detachable magazines.
Definitely practical in the military for a combat situation.
A lot easier to carry loaded mags than loose or boxed ammo. Also reloads are obviously a lot faster.
