Ask a technician/ballistician at a small ammo company anything.
I had a free afternoon and figured this would be fun
>>
Do you like design the profile of bullets?
ballistician sounds like a wicked neat job but im just not sure what it entails

I cant think of anything to get people for christmas besides booze. Help me out

I want to buy bulk 12 GA From Hell rounds.

How much.

Well, I lean more towards general technician than ballistician. I study ballistics, but haven't turned my ideas into proof on a CNC mill yet.
I work at a smaller ammo company that loads the bullets we like on the cases we like with the hot charges we like
Can't go wrong with scratch offs. I like the $10 bin at wal mart if I'm stuck and can't think of anything
>>32279815
We don't load any shotgun right now, but you could do it for like $1 a shot if you buy your own press

Not OP, but if I had millions of dollars at my disposal I would make a cartridge called .308 Dickkicker. Basically, it's a 30mm cartridge that has been necked to .308. I don't know what rifle can fire it, but I think about .308 Dickkicker every now and then.

How does it work for you guys getting licenses to produce proprietary rounds? Is it reasonable or do company exercise their monopoly strongly. FN's 5.7 and HK's 4.6 come to mind

Absolutely. The material that the projectile is comprised of is very important. Lead is extremely soft unless you add antimony to make it a hard cast, which still isn't as hard as copper, which still isn't as hard as brass (certain alloys). Solid brass projectiles are wonderfully tough with the right alloy.
Case strength is dependent upon the pressure you wish to make your ammo. Standard pressure 9mm and 45ACP does fine with a soft aluminum case, but you want brass for +P and +P+ loads. I like steel cased ammo believe it or not, but brass is still superior for reloadibility and high pressure applications.

Most .30 cal rifle cartridges with a case longer than 50mm are going to be AP regardless out to 50 yards with with right projectile.
The ATF frowns upon loading with the intent to be AP, but smart choices like solid brass and copper projectiles for rifle can get the job done out to greater distances because it is one material, not lead cored.
Flat nosed solid bullets do better at penetrating armor than pointed nose lead cored for the record.
>>32279872
Never talked to him, but the folks at applied ballistics have done a tremendous service for education in the industry.
>>32279878
More or less deal with customer questions, but I also test the shit out of everything we make at work and at home. We just load ammo, not make any projectiles, but there is a good deal of stuff that goes into developing a load.
>>32279914
Honestly, the things we have now are pretty well available to anyone, other than our gunpowders. We don't deal much in proprietary shit because every company in the ammo industry seems to hate each other. We established good relations with some projectile manufacturers and we keep it there for now, but we're looking at exploring some proprietary designs of our own finally.
No one gets along in this industry. Ammo companies get blamed for malfunctions in guns when 75% of the time the firearm malfunctioned. I've had companies like STI apologize to me before :)

Naturally, I wanted to learn loading too so here I am haha. I don't load much at work though, lots of other things, the engineers take care of loading
>>32279947
My average day consists of at least 5 dumb questions from customers (your .38 super doesn't work in my SW BodyGuard) over the phone or e-mail before I even finish my coffee.
Sometimes I have great phone calls, but usually I'm just answering basic questions like what do you recommend for this or how will that work in my Glock.
Once in a while I get on the horn with other companies and talk business and bullshit, and sometimes I get to make gun companies look like they have no idea what the fuck they are doing when they blame the ammo for a malfunction
>>32279973
Yeah that thing was a godsend. Not affected by light or weather, it makes all the difference on getting consistent readings. Though, if you can't shoot a 10" group at 30 yards with it, your readings will have larger spreads it seems. Not a problem for me, but that's why I test more than the engineers

what do you think about the gap between 223 micro action and w/e-the-fuck-size 308 is? is there a need for a modern 7.62x45 or .280 british?
>>
>>32280046
>>32280046
I didn't say wadcutter, I said a flat point. The Germans in WW1 used to turn their bullets around in the case to get through enemy helmets because the points weren't doing it. I phrased the wrong the first time, we've come a long way in bullet design since WW1. 325gr hard cast flat nose 45 colt loaded in +P with eat level 2a armor like candy for the record.
Check out some of those Nosler safari cartridges that are solid brass flat noses in a magnum large bore case. I've seen those eat 3a plate before where 7.62x54R failed
>>
>>32280096
Wait, why don't you have those barreled actions bolted to a table, wouldn't that be more consistant?
>>
what loading machines do you use?
>>
It makes sense when you think about it. A flat point will simply apply sheering force to what it impacts. A point however will start to penetrate, but then to widen the hole it will need to compress the material.

Im new to reloading, like this month new, so dont really know anything yet. Just wanted to make hot and cheap 10mm and it go broke at $1.5 each.

I'm interested in making some long range white tail loads. I noticed the BC of most 10mm is pretty garbage (at least compared to a rifle round, not sure vs other pistol) but is that going to really matter at 75yds? What types of bullets have better coefficients?

I'd like to make some AP stuff for fun, would you recommend copper bullets? My friend is a machinist for a Shipyard so has access to legit tools, I'd like him to make me a bunch of projectiles, how would i approach crafting a round? Copy someone else?

An even more intermediate cartridge? Interesting. Never thought of it.
Of course it does make me think of 6.8 Remington SPC and 6.5 Grendel.
Both started out with a good idea, but both are struggling to establish a foothold in the common market. The military of US and Russia have both conducted experiments on similar cartridges and there wasn't enough of a benefit to take flight and make the armies switch calibers, thus our commercial cartridges are born

45 Colt +P is the only way to compare it close to 44Mag, but not all 45 Colts can handle a +P diet.

>>32280354
Be honest and produce a truly exceptional cartridge. We load hot, like maximum SAAMI hot, and we're honest about it. So on complicated loads the novices don't want to try to load, or for older reloaders that are going out of practice buy from us, but also the average shooter who doesn't load likes hot ammo too so, everyone wins haha

9mm +P+ from a 4.6" Canik TP9SA, easily 100 yards with the right +P+ load. Love 9mm for distance shooting and close range use for critter dispatching on the farm.
I love 8mm Mauser for distamce shooting because at 1000 yards a 196gr bullet will hit at had as a 158gr .357 at point blank range.
I love .308 for 300 yards, and .223 for 150 yards, everything under 150 I use my handguns and 9mm primarily. 12ga 1 1/4oz slugs for hunting whitetail.

I made my dream cartridge. It's called .40 LOUDENBOOMER.

It's packed so full of Power Pistol that I have to use a hydraulic press to get the boolet in. I use RIP bullets because they look kewl.

I don't have a rifle that can fire it yet (it's going to be a bench rifle with 2" thick chamber walls) but I still load myself up a box of 20 rounds whenever I'm going to fly anywhere. TSA likes to steal my ammo even after I check it properly, gosh I sure hope they never shoot it.

The box art and branding I did myself (not sharing it here so no one can google it and find anything but the little fake website I set up for it) but since my day job is graphic designer and brand management, it looks pro.

I've also had it on my passenger seat and let some of the dindu diversity hire hick georgia cops on my commute confiscate it illegally.

I agree and the reason has to do with avoiding deflection. A wadcutter is a flat as hell bullet and it just smacks into whatever it hits. It also causes twice the damage of pointed bullets and more than a hollowpoint in fact (the hole coming out the back is huge).

Its got some downsides though and thats instability, and that thick armor (like a half inch plate) is just going to dent while a pointed armor piercing core bullet will punch through.

> the ap round doesnt deform and the narrow surface area it acts on is like stabbing with a thin blade

Thats why a Crossbow Bolt can shoot through a kevlar vest despite being ancient technology driven by less power than a .22 rifle.

Its also Momentum that determines penetration not total Energy (though the equation is complex and involves calculus, when condensed down it pretty much comes out looking like Momentum).

Crossbow Bolt being like 10mm in size with a sharp blade point on it... even if its going rather low speed like 300fps its got all that weight behind it (older crossbow bolts usually weighed twice as much as a shotgun slug).

KE is much more inmportant than momentum when dealing with armour piercing.
Turning bullets backwards in WW1 meant slightly higher pressure and velocities but more importatntly meant the bullet acted more in a punching manner than piercing. This meant more efficient penetration before the bullet deformed.
The introduction of actual hardened AP cores obsoleted this practice.
Check out the latest IAA journals for articles on AP cores and their effectiveness.
