When I worked as a guide for a national park, we were required to carry a 12 gauge. Most carried a cut down Moss 500 with a pistol grip. I just used my Remington 870 and added a pistol grip. I like having a stock so I can actually aim.

We were supposed to all use Magnum slugs but I always loaded mine in this order. Buckshot,Slug,Slug,Buckshot then the rest slugs. My thinking was that with adrenaline pumping and especially if a bear came charging through thick brush I would have a better first shot with buckshot. Easier to hit the fast moving bear when you are shaky from adrenaline. The slug would come next. If the bear was not mortally wounded from that I would have another slug. If all that didn't put the bear down then it would be within a few feet at this point which is why my next load would be another buckshot for close range.

Ah, the classic I don't spend any times in the woods or actually have seen an animal get hit with various cartridges.

If you're vigilante and stay calm, a 308 win is enough. It just depends on what the terrain is and why you expect to see bears. Like the guy on this thread who had to stand on guard duty said he used a 12 gauge. A shotgun is a good universal tool though 50 yards and less is what you can expect to be effective.

Most people own a 30-30 or 7.62x39 and for camping or hiking I normally have my sam7sf. Not that I expect to get all 30 rounds off but a 7.62x39 will drop whatever we have in north America with well enough shot placement. Soft points with this cartridge are surprisingly good.

I will also on occasion bring my Yugo Mauser camping. A nice heavy 8mm load will drop most animals like a sack of potatoes. I would honestly be terrified of moose over bear.

Self defense? 308 or 12 gauge slug. They can charge from close range and you will need something that can cause severe bone and tissue damage no matter where you hit it.
