I require a handgun for self-defense at home, and one for when I go camping. Currently in the process of attaining my CHL.
I want to buy one or two guns and be set.
polymer/steel/expensive/inexpensive, etc. I don't care.
What should I buy?

I like to buy things for life.
That is my only requirement; given maintenance and reasonable care, I want this handgun(s) to be "my baby" for life.

Please advise.

It's okay just to say "want"

1911. Ruger and Colt make decent examples, but the triggers are too heavy. Magnum Research makes one with a better trigger, but mine had a bad slide stop that needed to be replaced. Avoid series 80 1911s.

Glock 22 gen 1.
>>
>>32252531
Glocks have pisspoor triggers.
>>
Sig Sauer or a Glock. If you reall what to get a 1911, make sure you get something incredibly good, like a Nighthawk Custom or some shit.

Glock 17 for home defence, slap on a good light for it and put expensive hollow points in it. Keep it well maintained and it won't malfunction and always go bang when you need it to. Personally I think its ugly, but its for home defense so it doesnt really matter

Beretta 92A1 for camping. Super reliable, will always go bang, looks A E S T H E T H I C. Theres a reason Law Enforcement and Military use them
>>
>>32249761
>I like to buy things for life.
that's all well and good, but no gun can shoot forever. there are plenty of guns that will last "a lifetime" but only if that lifetime doesn't include running more than 20,000 (usually less for handguns) though it.

even really good, well built handguns from renown brands will require major parts replacements around 10k.

Glock triggers are

1. too heavy
2. too much creep

Good thing about Glocks are their cheap replacement parts. Damn easy to swap shit out, too.
>>

Not my fault you got some frail lil dick beaters.
>too much creep
It's almost as if practice is essential to owning a firearm.
Now, if you were to link some claims from weapons experts and designers proving the glock to be the worse than getting shampoo in your dickhole I'd believe you. Until then I'd suggest you grab a pair of grip trainers and squeeze like your life depended on it.
>>
>>32249761
CZ p10C when that's in the US january

it's a glock 19, sans hideousness, shit trigger, and horrible ergos
>>
>>32252662
Does it have double strike capability?
>>
>>32252632
>Not my fault you got some frail lil dick beaters.
Jerry Miculek (and all serious target shooters) use light triggers.
>>32252632
>It's almost as if practice is essential to owning a firearm.
A good shooter can overcome a bad trigger, and a track star can run with a 20 lb sack on his back, but both are unnecessary impediments. It is a generally accepted fact that trigger creep is an impediment to accuracy. This has been written about for many decades.

The Glock trigger is objectively worse than that of single-action, hammer-fired pistols.

First some advice, then I'll make my bid.

Find a gun loving friend who isn't autistic. Ask him to take you to a few shops and a range. Take his suggestions, and take a few from here. Go to the shop. Hold them. Narrow it down to 2-3 pistols. Rent out the range for an hour or two with your friend. Shoot said pistols. You can figure out the rest.

Here is my suggestion: Glock 17 or 19, Gen 4.

Gun is reliable and will last you forever. If something does break, the aftermarket is huge. If you don't like something (EX: the trigger or the sights everyone complains about) then change it out. The gun doesn't need to be fucked with often, and has no external controls to fuck with.

Backup recommendations: Walther PPQ, HK VP9, S&W M&P9

So you like camping, do you?
The Sig Sauer P320 Compact loves to hide under your clothes and loves to be dirty.

They're totally modular. Unlike the Glock, you can easily remove the entire firing mechanism for deep cleaning. Frames are cheap and come in many different sizes/textures/colors.

I've practically shelved my Glock 19 after several years and several hundred rounds in favor of my P320c. YMMV depending on what you train well with, but I love this gun.

>Theres a reason Law Enforcement and Military use them

The reason the military use them is they won the contract decades ago.

Law enforcement in the USA overwhelmingly use Glocks or other polymer pistols because they are granted a huge discount.

Hearing "there's a reason the government uses them" should be a reason to recommend everyone who wants a car to buy a Crown Vic. I mean, the cops use them, cops must be the experts on buying the best cars.

I'm sure the 92A1 is great but that's just not an argument.
>>
>>32253409
Well anon, crown vic's reliably make it to 300k miles without major engine or transmission issues so what's the problem?

Fuck the m92. It's a piece of shit. All the ones we had issued in my unit blew. Get a Glock 19. There's a good reason it's hard to find a good price on a used one.
>>
>>32249761
Don't sperg like an average /k/ommando and look at spreadsheets filled with various data noone sane cares about. The question isn't 'what's the best handgun' but 'what's the best handgun FOR YOU'. Find something that fits your hand and you can use comfortably and flip off the armchair ballistics experts.
>>
>>32253421
No problem friendo, I'm just saying winning a government contract does not inherently mean it's better, it means it fit their criteria the best, was the cheapest, and possibly could have won through bribing the judges.

Glock 20

>fit their criteria the best, was the cheapest

essentially what someone would look for in a weapon primarily used for self defense

I was using the government as a source for its proven reliability. It passed military trials which was why it was accepted as the military's primary handgun.

>winning a government contract does not inherently mean it's better

uhmm better than what? I did not compare either weapon to any other firearm. Both have a track record of being some of the most reliable weapons produced. For someone such as OP, when you're talking about a firearm used to defend your life, you want something reliable

>pic related, mfw you actually think they won a military contract through bribes
>>
>>32253477
Your unit was a piece of shit. Not every grunt takes care of weapons the way they are supposed to. 5 second google searches will show you people who have put over 10000 (yes, ten-thousand) rounds though a 92 and had no malfunctions. Theres almost no comparison between the abuse a military gun goes through and the care a civilian counterpart sees
