What does /k/ think about flare guns?

I picked up a 26.5mm flare gun recently. It is of Soviet design, but was made by CZ some time post-war for export to East Germany.

These are pretty fun to shoot and have a pleasant kick.

Does anyone here have 26.5mm or 40mm flare guns? Share your experiences here.

These white flares are kind of spendy at ~$20/round. They're supposedly capable of lighting up 15 acres for 15 seconds. Haven't shot one of these off yet.

I'm too lazy and I want to bump

So are flareguns treated the same as firearms?
Where would I go about buying one like that?
>>
>>32236778
In the US flareguns are only firearms if you use them as one, i.e. convert it to fire ammunition. Otherwise you should be good. I'd like one myself, where did you get yours OP?
>>
>>32236778
There are drop in conversions to fire various calibers like 12g and .45acp, but you would need to register it as an AOW. I had this mailed to my door without any kind of permit or license.

>>32236812
I found this on gunbroker, it seems like a bunch of these com-bloc models were imported a decade ago from Poland and Czech Republic, and have now made their way to gunbroker.
>>
>>32236453
Never really thought much of them until now. They could be kinda fun. Do you just shoot the flares into the air and they just illuminate an area for a little bit or what??
>>
>>32236915
I've heard you shouldn't shoot shotgun shells out of the 12gauge flare adapters because the pressures are too high.

Do you know how true this is? Are there any links to where you could buy a genuine 12 gauge adapter? Seems like it could be a fun little toy.
>>
>>32237196
You are correct, I was mistaken. Adapters are for 12gauge marine flares, not regular shells. I'm seeing conversions for .410 /.45LC though.
>>
I only had a couple of flare stick as per requirement by local law
>>
>>32236485
Where'd you get the parachute flares from?
>>
>>32237469
Chandlery. That's a fancy name for a boat store. You can get straight up simple flare guns for around $50 at walmart in the boating aisle. That's usually near sporting goods.

The parachute flares are more expensive, and are packaged like industrial roman candles. They're required by the coast guard for vessels over a certain length.
>>
>>32237557
I'm aware what they are, friend.
Was curious where you got them because I kinda want to pick up some more, although those are a little overpriced.

>Here's my Polish Wz 44 and Yugo M57 flare guns.

OP here, got mine off of gunbroker. Came out to just under $20/shell shipped.

I have a pre-war Walther Leuchtpistole. It uses the typical European 26.5mm flares. I've fired off about half a box of star parachutes over the years. I have a .22 adapter for it as well but I keep forgetting to track down a .45 Colt/.410 adapter. Given its heft I suspect .410 would be quite mild.

I have a couple, as always drake's are better than mine.

Always have a blast, me and friends use them to kick off range days occasionally and we've gotten away with them during the 4th and New Years for a blast or two. Biggest problem is the hazmat fee with shipping, we've never gotten around to a group buy so usually I just wait for a gun show to role around.

Mine, same Czech type as OP's. Going to eventually try reloading them, I believe you can drill out the primer pocket to accept 12ga primers.
>>
>>32236915
Don't they see rifled inserts that don't need to be registered? I've seen rifled .22 drop in barrels.. not smoothbore so i don't think it would be an AOW
>>
>>32239061
yeah if they're rifled it's not an aow, and most of the 12 gauge converters are tapered at the throat to just accept 12 gauge flares.
>>
>>32237811

Jelly as always, Drake. I've always thought those had the quintessential flare pistol look, but damn are they expensive.
>>
>>32239061
a way to get around the AOW with shotgun rounds would be to use a really long adapter. At that point the total cost might be as much as a singleshot anyway though.

I have a post-war Geco and a .410/.45 adaptor. Recoil is quite manageable even with the lighter flare gun shooting federal 000 pistol loads.
>>
Can you use 12 gauge flares in a mossberg 500?
>>
>>32236453
Good for 12 gauge slugs
>>
>>32239787
should be able to, longer barrels with tight chokes might be a problem though.
