Modern militaries honestly should be adopting gliders. They allow for a quick and silent insertion of ground troops into the combat zone, while remaining cost effective and lowering enemy morale because of their scary appearance.

Yes, but they need to have engines on them so they don't tie up planes with needing to be towed and so that they can fly back to base for reuse.
They'll be perfect over Leningrad.
>>32231593
They at least need 2 feet of steel armor and AT LEAST 6 16 inch guns to even be remotely effective.
>>32231593
British tried that in WW2 with a wooden gliders to deploy commandos or light vehicles behind enemy lines
I don't know why it was discontinued tho

Radar and homing missiles happened. Gliders are simply too slow. Although they're experimenting with cargo drone gliders. Much preciser and cheaper than parachutes.

I think if someone could ever program an AI to soar as well as a human could, then there is potential. Gliders can literally stay up for 12 hours at a time with a good pilot.
>>32231593
on a side note some politicans rode a glider they all died
>>32231593
Gliders are fun for recreational flying, but there really isn't much they can do on a modern battlefield. Maybe if it were some kind of post apocalyptic shtf situation. I mean you don't seem to see any developed nation's air force using them.
Okay, so maybe gliders are a little old fashioned, but what about heavy armored gliders that could carry tanks and vehicles along with people? Or you could mount cannons and have it be a gunship too. It would be good for CAS and be a cheap and easy way to replace the A-10.
>>32231593
They tried that in wwII. It wasnt repeated after that because the number of casualties from landing compared to parachute insertion was insane.
>>32234173
wait, what if you take a regular old, tried and true APC design and by incorporating new technologies and composite materials you turn it into an airborne, glider assault insertion platform?
I would call them aero... aero something
>>32234173
But can it be launched from a battleship?

NEOWWWWWWWWWWWWW

How about we name it after the general who invented it?
The AeroGavin.
>>32232881
WTF, I love gliders now.
>>32234234
Just out of curiosity, I.. I er, speak for a friend you see. About how many ants could one of these things carry?
>>32234256
HUE
LAD

We could make the battleships super duper tall, like thousands of feet above the combat zone and then push the gliders off the edge of the ship. That way we could launch them anywhere. Imagine dropping a glider off the top of this thing.

Glider pilot here.
