You don't have to worry about finding and holding a job, you don't have to worry about getting a house, you don't have to worry about anything since you are provided with everything and just following orders. It's also an easy way to boost your ego. Also free benefits.

You don't need overly competent and intelligent people on the frontline. You just need men that are trained and will do as they are told by the men above them.

Because the incompetent soldier is extremely good at discovering hidden snipers/MGs, ambushes, and landmines/IEDs. He usually gets killed or wounded in the process, but that is not a great loss and spares a more useful soldier his fate. Morale is also less affected when the KIA was a particularly stupid mother fucker.

Look at world war one or practically any war for that matter, people with barely any education or skills were sent to the front, intelligent ones were kept behind the lines.
