What does /k/ think of the manhack from Half-Life 2?
http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Manhack
>>32204661
They would be much more effective IRL than in the game.
I hadn't thought about it, but I have to assume that the blades are just that, and provide no lift, and the entire unit floats around with the same antigravity bullshit the rest of their antigravity bullshit uses to float around.
I think it would be a lot more effective if it just carried a grenade, but god damn that would be annoying in game.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAX
>>32204661
>rendered usesless by a stick or pipe
>>32204661
I used to capture them in mid-air and smash them against walls or other hard surfaces with the gravity gun.
The resistance could have dealt with them pretty easily if they had hung a bunch of fine wires from the roof of every sewer entrance. The blades might cut a few, but eventually they'd get tangled.

You mean horrifying?
Would they be effective in real life?
>>32205608
No.
>>32205608
Maybe if you had a quadrotor that carried a grenade or some shit it could be remote controlled by infantry as a non-line of sight means to clear out fortifications.
>>32205608
>>32205640
You bet they would be effective.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2413231/Roman-Pirozek-Jr-Man-decapitates-remote-control-helicopter.html
Remote controlled, armed, fixed-wing suicide UAVs with small warheads for use by infantry already exist, see the Switchblade or BattleHawk UAVs.They are said to be very effective, too. Troops in Afghanistan can't get enough of them.

Since we're on this topic.
How effective would be a Strider on modern day warfare? How it would be taken down?
>>32209020
pretty easily, i guess
>>32209020
I bet a 120mm APDS would probably go right through it.

But you guys have to consider a few stuff. Like how he can quickly moves and take cover, plus the strong plasma(???) machine gun and the ray gun.
>>32209020
>How effective would be a Strider on modern day warfare?
Somewhere on the SDK forums, there's a post talking about where all the combine synths are best used. like; Striders are never used on the coast, but are used heavily in cities, Hunters are only used in the wilderness, etc.
>>32209087
I'll take a look on that, thanks.
But it's a bit weird how the Hunters aren't used in urban warfare. They're small and quick.
>>32209073
>Like how he can quickly moves and take cover,
Not particularly impressive when you go from 5 stories tall to 2 stories, that's still pretty exposed
>strong plasma(???) machine gun
That can be stopped with corrugated iron sheet, a tank would be basically invulnerable
>ray gun
Which it choreographs and takes time to prime, allowing everyone to take cover or exploit the gap
>>32209103
You would think so, though it was probably more due to that fact that Valve hadn't finished the Hunter design in episode 1, so they don't show up.
There is the AR3 guy, who knows nothing about fighting Hunters, because he's from the city.
While not effective, I'd imagine Cremators to do a good job of demoralizing troops if you put them in the right spots.
>>32209117
>That can be stopped with corrugated iron sheet, a tank would be basically invulnerable
I am thinking on a more realistic scenario. I mean, that machine gun would probably penetrate a few armored vehicles, buildings for sure.
If it was bullets i'd say that his gun was a 30 or 40mm.
>>32209121
I see. There's a channel that explains about all the HL enemies, i remember the guy saying that the Hunter was actually meant to appear on HL2.
>There is the AR3 guy, who knows nothing about fighting Hunters, because he's from the city.
Makes sense.
>>32204661
>they took out every last interesting thing from HL2
Still makes me mad
>>32209181
You're talking about original concept they had going on right? If I remember right valve made the changes because they wanted to the player to fight for a dying world, not a dead one. But I do feel you, I'm a sucker for overly bleak apocalyptic shit myself.
The idea of the entire world being nothing more than a barren rock devoid of all life, the air being nothing more than toxic fumes and humanity being just barely surviving in a select few cities with dwindling resources makes my dick wet.
>>32209117
>That can be stopped with corrugated iron sheet, a tank would be basically invulnerable
That's more for gameplay reasons though, isn't it? (if you're talking about the final boss in episode 1)
Also, there's a wrecked tank in the sewers under C17. I guess you could write that off as another combine miritary unit destroying it though, the current military is just to keep the human populace in check.
>>32209150
These things are creepy, there's one in the beta.
>>32204661
I remember reading somewhere that originally when hl2 was in development the game was supposed to be much darker. The rebels operating the railway were going to be covered in scars from Manhack attacks. Also, Manhacks were used more to inflict fear and non-lethal wounds than to outright kill. They're a psychological weapon.
Whenever I hear that whining noise they make, I start throwing grenades - they're the only enemy that actually scares me.
>>32209231

Cremator.
>>32209231
originally Manhacks were supposed to be partly controlled by people playing what they thought was a game but in reality they'd be killing rebels in real life. Pretty grimdark and doesn't make much sense but still
IIRC the enemies you encounter in the game are just those used to occupy earth. In the 7 hour war the Combine used different forces so obviously the Stalker isn't exactly suited for bigger-scale warfare cause that's not what it's supposed to be good at

I actually liked their soldiers. Like how there were standard soldiers, spec ops, prison guards(nova prospekt) and civil protection.
Combine military was pretty "human" in that sense. Maybe they adapt their military to the world that they dominate, idk.
>>32209457
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOEEmwuUXP4
Why havenholm was such a shithole compared to the rest?
>>32209475
Because it was a rebel town that the Combine shelled the shit out of, I'm pretty sure Valve stated somewhere that the town in Lost Coast is Ravenholm.
Being a shithole doesn't stop it from being great tho
>>32209464
>Combine military was pretty "human" in that sense. Maybe they adapt their military to the world that they dominate, idk.
Somewhere in the Citadel I think you see humans being turned in combine soldiers. They turn the lifeforms from all of the worlds they invade into synths, the strider, dropship and gunship are all aliens fused with machines.
>>32209041
>>32209047
They are impervious to anything you can carry and need somewhere between 5 and 14 RPG direct his to die, depending on your difficulty setting. It won't be a cakewalk.
>>32209391
>>32209430
HL3 will literally never come out. They're not working on it, they don't give a fuck, and they wouldn't make any money on it anyway because it would literally never live up to the fucking insane hype people are assigning to it.
>>32209496
Yes, with the headcrabshell, right?
It was great, kinda like a survival horror. The fast zombies were a pain in the ass, throwing me down the bulding and i had to fight all the headcrabs on the streets. lol
>>32209524
Human in a sense of military. Like having ranks, special forces, air-force. Navy maybe?
They adapt their fighting skills to the world that they dominate. Like the anon said earlier, in 7 hour war the Combines used soldiers that didn't appear to the game, so i assume that they inspired their Earth military from the ones that they fought during the war.
Yes, the combines were basically humans that got transformed. I believe some of the civil protection were actual humans that decided to work with the Combines.
That's why the combine soldiers speak a different language than the Civil protection.
>>32209550
It's a justified hype. All HL are god-tier games IMO.

They can still understand and speak English. When you're in nova prospekt, waiting in one of the guard rooms there's a breencast where breen threatens the guards if they can't do better than the overwatch forces.

>>32209614
>wanting the shitty part of a good game remastered in a shitty remastered
>>32209636
Yes, they were humans before after all so i guess they let a few stuff in the minds, like english.
Still, doesn't make much sense why they speak the Combine language while in combat rather than english.
>>32209418
That one I thought was actually quite stupid...
If that thing smashes into the ground, how the fuck are all of the headcrabs inside not liquefied due to the tremendous acceleration force?
Vx gas would be more effective.
>>32209925
Stabilised inside or something, like a huge spring. Could be worked into the mechanism that breaches the top so the headcrabs can crawl out.
>>32209995
That still wouldn't solve the impact problem...
>>32204661
in large swarms that would be nightmare fuel
>>32209681
I would imagine that the purpose of that is to communicate in combat without letting their opponents know what they're saying.
>>32204836
Except if it's a /k/ommando.
I would have to assume it uses a pair of connected ballasts, and the blades actually have a gimbal to change lift direction.
>>32209632
The Xen part was my least favorite aspect of HL1 to be honest.
>>32210052
True that. Still, quite silly since the Civil protection speaks english when in combat.
>>32210128
I quite liked it, but my favorite part was the Lambda Lab arch.
>>32209531
i played hl2 on highest difficulty multiple times, they don't take close to 14 RPG hits, 5 is more like it
>>32210319
I'm pretty sure it's 3 on easy, 5 on med, 7 on hard.
The fight outside the bank was a pain on hard, I remember it taking ages just to kill one strider.
>>32209588
>The fast zombies were a pain in the ass
I played Ravenholm with the Gravity Gun only for the achievement, died a couple of time at the point where Father Grigori sends the tram over to you and you have to fight like 4 fast zombies. Later i found out that you can just sprint in circles and they almost never hit you, they weren't that scary afterwards
>>32210358
I just hit the lever and then ran back to the walkway and hid in the house. The part with the slow elevator just jump down with a health pack.
You can complete Ravenholm in under 15 minutes if you're quick.
>>32209681
they are still speaking english it's just pitch shifted so you can't hear it properly

What? I heard them speak english. They just have a radio embedded in their larynx.
>>32210343
you are right they take 7 on normal and hard. well that fight wasn't that hard anymore once you got to the box with unlimited rocket ammo
>>32210400
but killing zombies with buzzsaw blades and exploding barrels is so much fun why would you rush through Ravenholm?
>>32210903
If I'm playing HL2 I'll either rush through the game as quickly as possible, or take my time and try and find new things.
I've played through probably 15~ times in the last few years.
I just find the game so, enjoyable I guess?
>>32209340
okay I see how about this
>someone throws a nade near its legs
>once again falls over

>>32211077
