Try scrubbing it with a Scotchpad with your selected weapon cleaner.
Maybe you clean it first.
If is just a little surface rust get a little copper brush and oil.
If the barrel is pitted and nasty buy a new barrel.

If you plan to store it for a long time (1yr+), grease it up as you would with any firearm.
