Would a 220 Grain hard cast 10mm Buffalo Bore round be sufficient for black bear and cougar protection? Going up to Lancing, Tenn to hunt with a buddy and thought it might be a good idea to bring a sidearm.
>>
Yep, more than enough.
>>
>>32188089
Cool. Thanks
>>
>>32188089
Not him, but what about .45 acp? Just wondering how much of a difference the velocity makes, since they're around the same weight.
>>
>>32188085
For AR BCG:
If I have a melonited barrel on the way for a build, should I look to get a nitride treated BCG in the future? Right now, I've ordered a PSA premium phosphate/chrome lined one. Do the benefits matter for the BCG or is it just a different way of doing the same thing?

Also, I bought what appears to be a knockoff B5 Sopmod stock at a gun show on the cheap. I figured it wasn't a genuine one because it had no markings, but upon further inspection it looks like it is almost exactly the same as the real deal down to the o-rings for the battery compartments. The only major difference I can detect is that the QD sling swivel hole is not the same size. Is this some sort of production fuck up or overrun of the real thing, or just an oddball mistake on an otherwise close copy?
>>
>>32188476
nitrided would be easier to clean and possibly be less picky about running it too dry.

The majority of owners would never put enough rounds through one to benefit from the possibly better wear performance of the nitrided bcg.

That said, it isn't like the nitrided ones cost that much more than a phosphated one, when comparing similar quality bcgs.
>>
>>32188560
Thanks. The last point is all the justification I need to buy a nitride one for this rifle, and since I'll have a spare I guess I might as well build another gun.
>>
>>32188256
A huge one. Speed is penetration.

I'm turning 21 soon which means I'm allowed to own a handgun in my state (shotguns are allowed at 18 but you have to wait until 21 for handguns). I don't know much about guns, I'm a 108lb female with child-sized hands and I'm not very strong.
What should I look for in a handgun? I want something I could conceal in a concealed carry purse for self defense.
I just feel very lost and unsure where to start
>>
>>32188690
bought the wife a ruger lcp in .380 and she enjoys it. comes in pretty girl colors too.
>>
>>32188690
I doubt that you couldn't own a handgun under 21 that said lots of people suggest revolvers for women for simplicity. That said I'm of the opinion that a healthy person can rack a slide on a handgun.
I would recommend against the super small handguns because they make it harder to get a hold of the grip and slide for manipulation. Also the smaller guns have rather strong springs. They also tend to have more felt recoil.
I would recommend steel guns that are reasonably small. Sig 238s are well liked because of the easy to operate slide and external safety. I would start there

>lots of people suggest revolvers for women for simplicity. That said I'm of the opinion that a healthy person can rack a slide on a handgun.
One reason people suggest revolvers for women is that you can fire it from inside the purse or shoved up against your adversary. She can be strong enough to rack the slide all day but if the gun goes out of battery when she needs it that's not any help.
>>
>>32188690
hk45/usp .45 compact
>>
>>32188690
Get something small like a Ruger LCR or LC9s and get one of the bra holsters. That way you can hide it under your titties so if your purse gets snatched you still have a gun. If you do carry it in your purse, get a trigger guard for it so you don't shoot yourself looking for something in the purse.
>>
>>32188690
I'd second p238, but I hate sights, sight radius, size (gets lost in hand), but if it's comfortable go with it.

Is the Tavor and it's new cousin X95 any good or am I better off getting an FS2000 or an AUG if I want to dip my toe into the world of bullpups?
>>
>>32190050
Tungsten carbide is very hard, and very heavy. And APFSDS means that you are actually shooting a very fast and sharp arrow. When that arrow impacts, it has a huge kinetic energy (or in simple words, a lot of force due to it's weight being at high speed) concentrated in a very sharp point. That's why you want a very heavy material, because the arrow is slender yet heavy compared to, say, steel or whatever.
They also used depleted uranium for that task, due it's weight yes, but there are... side effects with that material.

Is a Vz.58 a good alternative rifle for someone who wants to share ammo with my AK-using friend?

>>32190899
Yes, they must be zeroed.
Typical zeroing procedure for buis is:
>if elevation is present on the rear sight it is set to Z/zeroing or whatever the manual stipulates, RTFM as not many rear buis have adjustable elevation
>make sure windage if present on the rear sight is centered
>use elevation adjustment on the front sight to bring yourself to the desired point of aim and point of impact arrangement at the designated range
>confirm you are using a correct and centered cheekweld then adjusts windage on the rear sight if necessary
The zero is user preference unless you're .mil. I like the 25m but 100m or 300m are much more common.

Be a real man and get a Mini 30 if you want to share ammo with an AK.

Yes. This is exactly why .243 is used to hunt grizzly and not 45-70.

That piece of paper is for a timestamp and it lets people know when the photo was taken or to prove that the poster is real in some cases.

It doesn't. APFSDS's are made from heavy metal alloys (W-Ni-Fe or W-Ni-Fe-Co with 90-95% of tungsten by mass). These alloys have mechanical properties comparable to high strength steels.

"Tungsten carbide" mentioning is a product of ignorant journalism.

That being said, I sure wish they'd have side loading gates on the centerfire levers.

Except for the "Henry Original" I don't think none of the centerfires should be front-of-the-tube-loading.

How "cowboy" do you want to be? SASS-type cowboy? You'd be better off getting something that is more authentic looking/functioning.

I bought a Marlin .45-70 a few months back, and the guy gave me Hornady Reloading dies for it too.

Now, I only have about 4 guns, each in a different caliber, but with the price of .45-70, I figure it would be in my interest to begin reloading. I'm going to start out with a single stage just because my volume will be low. Works out because I'm a stickler for precision.

My question being, are reloading dies proprietary to their manufacturer? Or would my Hornady dies work in a Lee press?

Single stack 9mm. Incredibly cheap ammo, decent stopping power, decently concealable.
>>
>>32198863
Pointless?

I think there's a lot of 'em that were done as one-offs. Why, though? I think the 22/243 is more common since the neck is already necked down a good bit. Necking down from 308 is definitely going to require neck turning and/or reaming, and you'll lose a greater number of cases during the forming stages. Still pointless though. 22-250 exists, is common, and can be loaded down to this level or greatly exceed it if you want to burn barrels.

Good solid proven choice. Check out the extreme penetrater loaded by underwood ammo. Shit is cash. Check out a few reviews on youtube
>>
>>32199173
Yep. It usually happens with hot loads, and too generous of clearances in the firing pin. I've seen it on a 460 rowland 1911. In that case, an EGW "oversized" firing pin fixed the problem.
>>
>>32199173
Forgot to add that if these are from your pistol, you may want to check your firing pin fit and look for shavings in the firing pin channel. They get shaved off by the firing pin hole when the barrel tilts down and those shaved bits can lead to a stuck firing pin.
>>
>>32199320
Thanks dude.
I didn't think hot because the cases seem to be pristine once fired factory loads, and the primer isn't flattened out. But I've run into totally inconsistent factory loads in my own guns so it's a possibility.
>>
>>32199358
It doesn't have to be a dangerously ho loadt. Higher pressure but still safe loads will make it more pronounced, like +P, etc. Softer primer cups also add to the problem.

Either way, you need to address the issue, especially if this is a carry gun, either by sticking with ammo that doesn't do this in your gun or looking into firing pin fit, or possibly even unlocking too soon. As I said earlier, those shaved bits of brass can cause a stuck firing pin.
>>
>>32199252
Oh right, .270 is necked-down .30-06

There's a lot of grey area there, though. Where's the line between one of those ridiculous revolvers with a 12 inch barrel, and a sawed-off shotgun with no stock? Neither one is meant to be shouldered.

And if it's the rifled barrel that makes a difference, then what's the legal difference between said long ass pistol and a short-barrelled rifle?

>>
>>32200616
Sadly, no, depending on your area. Around where I am, that's normal for the M91/30, and the M44 you're lucky to find under $300.
>>
>>32200564
Ya, but specifically the one that resembles a cartridge and you put it into the chamber as opposed to the one you stick on the front of your barrel.
>>
>>32200466
You basically got it.
It also depends on what the "firearm" started life as. If you took a normal mosin reciever and obrez it you just made an sbr because it started as a rifle. If you get a virgin reciever you could just build it into an obrez and have a perfectly legal pistol.

>>32200626
I believe that makes it into a firearm. Its a legal definition under the nfa, sort of covers everything that doesnt fit into a different catagory. Like those serbu shotguns arent technically a shotgun, atf classifies it as a firearm
>>
>>32188085
Hot and heavy 10mm .40, and .357 SIG FMJ/HC would probably be the best rounds for bear/hog defense in conventional autoloaders.

Go for the TAVOR X95 - they improved the trigger group from the TAVOR SAR and put the magazine release in the same area as on an AR. The only benefit to the first generation TAVOR (TAVOR SAR) is the looks. Some people also like the higher back butt plate on the SAR for shouldering. You should only really worry about the first round in the magazine. If you clean your gun fairly regularly, make sure not to get into the habit of just chambering that same round over and over again. Ideally you should be going to the range often enough to shoot through your ammo, making this not an issue. But if you have expensive carry ammo seperate from range ammo, I'd at least take the first round from your carry ammo on range days and shoot it off.

Reason being that repeatedly (that's 10, 20, 50 whatmany times) chambering the same round may cause the bullet to set back in the case, which will raise the PSI in the chamber. This is basically the origin story of Glocknades, as police would regularly chamber and unchamber the same round for months and then the gun exploded when actually firing that round.

Otherwise, just make sure your magazine springs are clean. Only really an issue if you are often outdoors in dusty areas. Do NOT "clean" the brass of your rounds with oil. If they are dusty, give them a little dry rub and leave them be.

Bore diameter greater than .50 and rifling and OAL. Anything smooth bore with a less than 26" OAL is an AOW. Anything with a over .50 caliber with less than 26" is an AOW. Any shotgun that leaves the factory with a stock becomes an SBS when the barrel becomes shorter than 18" regardless of status of the stock.
>>
>>32209054
I'm not a huge fan of modern-day Sig Sauer, but I respect their balls with regards to stretching the NFA.
>>
>>32205100
If the OAL is greater than 26" it's just a "firearm" and needs no stamp, if the OAL is less than 26" it's an AOW. Also if it helps, the magpul angled grip does not count as a grip (there are several atf letters about it) so you can put one on anything.

I have a question about silencers.

Let's say I don't want an assfuck huge silencer on the end of my barrel but my state doesn't allow SBR's, can I cut down the barrel and permanently attach / weld the silencer without making it a SBR? Can the end of the silencer then be considered part of the OAL and barrel length?

pic related, it's harder 2 explain.
>>
>>32209373
At that point you might be further ahead to come up with a custom integrated suppressor. That way you retain some of the performance of the full barrel length as well.

In any case, that does sound fine to my non-lawyer ears. I've considered doing the same to save a bit of money on tax stamps, actually.

>USMC battle belt MOLLE for $15

You can get a starter pack like a GI 3-day pack, USMC ILBE, or flat color civilian daypack for $50-80.

All of this equipment will be durable and well made, and will last as you upgrade. Unlike the website kit.

If you REEEALLLY want a cheap plate carrier, the Blackhawk Lo Vis is $30. No MOLLE, but you don't want to be hanging weight off the front of any $30 plate carriers anyways.

For your first "operator purchases" you should get a sling, a pocket notebook, good earpro, and decent belt. Spend your money on ammo and git gud.

School me on model 29s.

What are the most desirable trim levels? What's a decent price for one of these? Any years of manufacture I should avoid?

I want my first .44 mag for my collection, and I also want my first smith revolver. So this ticks both boxes.
>>

If you don't have any metalworking experience or tools, take it to someone who does metal fabrication and repairs, hell, maybe even a body shop. See what they can do.

Otherwise, it will depend upon how dented and where the dent is, but basically, you'll probably need to make what amounts to an anvil the same dimensions as the inside of the mag, and then straighten it out with that and a body hammer.

If you're lucky, maybe you can find a bit of metal that's close enough to the inside dimensions to work without having to fabricate an insert.

So I've been getting more and more interested in assembling/building my own rifle, especially the idea of staggering the wallet murder, but I'm trying to find possible builds that aren't just an ar15 or ak. Are there any other rifles that have decently available parts? I haven't done any of this kind of work with guns but I do have some experience working with my hands and have access to basic machine tools. So far I've just found FAL and G3-type rifle kits, both of which I'm interested in but just want to see all my options.

Also I've seen the possibility of making a range toy out of putting an sks receiver and aftermarket parts into an Archangel or Tapco stock, but I always find really mixed opinions on the sks aftermarket stuff.

What is the average wait time for PSA to ship items?

>buy upper, optic, and ammo the Wednesday before thanksgiving/black friday
>site claims uppers can take up to 15 days to process
>I'm assuming that's "business days"
>it's been 12 days since order was placed
>still processing
>due to the holiday and black friday insanity buying, I'm probably looking at about a month long wait (?)

I've heard PSA is notoriously slow, but how have your experiences been? I'm just really hoping I don't get fucked over. Reading several reviews, I've seen that many people have thrown up their hands and done the proverbial "fuckit" and got a refund because their items never shipped, yet PSA charged them immediately after placing the order.

I've got an ar 15 in a dissipator configuration (rifle length gas on a 16" barrel) and have short stroking issues with lighter loaded ammo. I know that dissipators tend to be under gassed. Would reducing the weight of the buffer help with the short stroking issues?

Starting to get concerned here folks and I need some advice. I've had a Lee-Enfield rifle sitting in my FFL since a little after 10 AM EST on saturday, They close in two hours and I've still not heard anything.

I called them at around 12 today asking if it was ready (maybe the FFL who shipped it forgot to include my number?) but the guy on the phone couldn't tell me anything. I left them my name, number, and a description of the firearm and still haven't heard anything since.

Tomorrow will be the third day (second business day) they've gone without logging it in. If I'm not mistaken, ยง 478.125 Record of receipt and disposition from the ATF says they only have until the end of the next business day (today) to get it logged in.

What should I do? Wait another day or two or head to the FFL and inquire in person? This is the first time they've ever taken more than a couple hours to have a transfer ready for me.

How do I stop flinching? Well, it's not so much a flinch as forcibly blinking when a shot goes off in front of my face. I haven't noticed any negative impact on my accuracy and I don't tense up or anything in anticipation of the shot, but when it goes off I can't keep my eyes from blinking. Even happens with .22LR.
