Fantastic. I've got four YouTube videos uploading that I'm going to use to finally drive a stake through the heart of the zombie idea that you can't use aluminium oxide and silicon carbide abrasives on high hardness, high vanadium content steels like Maxamet.

Also just got a new stone to try out for thinning primary grinds. It's made from industrial grinding waste grit including diamond, AlOx and SiC and its supposed to make a ~90 grit coarse Crystolon look slow.

Gonna say it again, if you guys design a blade, and it gets made, I will do the handles for free. I'll pay for shipping, cost of materials, all of that will be free.

I'm working on a demo to raise more interest, I don't really have any relevant photos of my work. I'm not super into knives, I only really got into them because of my tangential knowledge of cutting implements from woodworking. I just think it would be cool to have a /k/ brand knife. I don't expect it to replace anyone's EDC but it would be nifty to get it made even if it was ceremonial.

Right now I'm handling a leuku blade, it's going to be a pretty basic handle with some inlay, just to prove I actually know what I'm talking about. I'm waiting for a new chisel to arrive so don't be on the edge of your seats, but I'd really like to make this happen.

Speak for yourself, I like Childress knives and they cost less than your average Esee with cutting geometry mass manufacturers don't even dare incorporate into their knives.
>>
>>32187461
Thats all well and good but it doesnt look stunning. It looks plain, and the blade has shitty lines all down it. The recurve is fucking retarded.
>>
>>32187077

He really doesnt.

That blade finish is shit tier amateur shit fuck shit.

The recurve is probably not intentional, it's because he doesnt know how to grind properly
>>
>>32187629
As I said anon, in your opinion, the "shitty lines" simply tell me ground by hand which generally equates to excellent edge geometry and the burl used on that handle, is IMO, most definitely stunning. Also the only retarded thing about recurves is they're a bit harder to sharpen on stones, in terms of use they're fantastic.
>>
>>32187674

I have knives that are ground by hand that dont have the shitty amateur recurve

What is amateur about a recurve?, nearly all Childress knives are recurved apart from a few of his weird designs, it's not an unintentional part of the knife.

Not really doing any 'mass production', just not set up for that. All my stuff is done completely by hand with hammers, files, chisels, hand saws, fire, sandpaper and more than the odd bit of swearing. About as complicated as I get is a drill press and maybe the bench grinder for roughing stuff out.

>>32186535
Thanks mate, I decided to do a modern interpretation of the old Hadseax (aka- short Seax) utility knife in terms of the blade shape- but a different spin on the handle which gives a bit of knuckle clearance, finger safety and feels comfy in a sabre or pinch grip.
Managed to get some very nice UK produced O1 tool steel, double-tempered to about 60HRC, went the nearly full-retard flat grind down to about 18degrees with a 1mm wide 20-22deg microbevel as its primary edge- obviously not meant to cut down trees or punch holes in oil drums, but on soft stuff (veggies, cardboard, meat) that its meant to be used on, it cuts like a fucking laser.
Bolsters are 304 SS, timber is Tasmanian Tiger Myrtle (which is getting harder to find), blade inlay and reinforcement rings are brass. Also has some G10 liner running down the centre in between the metals, timber was 6 coats of UV resistant polyurethane clearcoat... which took a damn long time to harden and polish, but at least the knife can go for a bit of a swim in the sink and nothing's going to shit the bed.

It looks like someone took one of those 8$ "survival" knives (the ones with the matches in the handle) that you can get at any hardware store and painted it black for some reason.
>>
>>32187629
It's a matter of preference, but I look at his knives all the time and he does a beautiful job on his scales. I have one in ATS 34 and dyed camelbone scales. The only issue I had with it is the hand ground blade since mine had uneven bevels. Price to pay since he hand grounds them all, but the lines look fine and the recurve looks like a trademark move for him.

>>
>>32182420

I'd have to pay for a PO box as I am most definitely not giving out my address on a Singaporean shadow-puppet symposium.

Why don't you just buy a Norton India combination coarse/fine oilstone and learn to sharpen? The edge of an India F may not be pretty but it will have really high slicing aggression and slicing edge retention.

>look like

You are everything that is wrong with the modern knife buyer. Who cares about its aesthetic qualities? It's a tool. And most custom makers do use heat treatments and blade/edge geometries that are MUCH higher performance than production knife makers.

Here is an example of a Calton Cutlery necker I have in 1095 at ~62.5 HRC. Do you see how thin that spine is compared to a 3mm spine Spyderco? It's also less than half as thick behind the edge as most production knives.

People who have never used such a knife have no idea how much less force they require to make cuts than your average Spyderco (much less the even worse geometries used by other production makers).
>>
>>32189493
Mhmm do you knoa of a good fucking knife with similar look?
>>
>>32189243
I'm a different anon that made a comment about ESEE, but you can find knives on bladeforums made by Childress for less than $130 most of the time.
>>
>>32189613

If I didnt care for aesthetics I sure as hell wouldnt buy an overpriced 200$ knife, I'd get a frosts or morakniv that does the job well enough.

I dong give a flyin fuck about muh geometries, I can do those myself and I already have knives like that. Aesthetics are the main thing that sells a knife. They're not just tools, they're collectibles for hoarders to amass and that's how the knife industry lives.

If your knife looks like shit you have no place anywhere, because there's probably a knife equally as good that looks better or miles cheaper that works just as well

Any truly sharp apex at any grit above ~250 should be able to shave arm hair, slice newsprint easily, and push cut me sprint with the grain.

At around 4,000 grit the ability to make crossgrain pushcuts should be expected.

Yeah, I saw that on the stock, which makes it even cooler.

Actually, after mentioning it, I figured I'd take a pic of my 760 along with the most appropriate "knife" I could think of, which seems to be a cut-down Enfield 1917 bayonet. I know everything about the rifle, since my grandfather was the original owner, but nothing about the bayonet except that a friend found it in his basement.

I'd love to imagine that this was a "trench knife" conversion done on the Western Front, but chances are it was done postwar for innawoods use or whatever. I've still avoided any attempts at restoration beyond a light wipedown with CLP and a careful edge cleanup, just in case it's actually got historical value.

If you held a stainless steel knife and a titanium knife(handles ofc), the titanium knife would be, lighter, stronger and significantly more expensive. Light can be fragile but that's the whole point, making things light without sacrificing strength.

but fuck huge thick as shit blades are all the rage cause what if someone has to stab a car door and then use it as a step to get their fat ass to the roof to get in through the sun roof since their keys are locked in.,

the zt0450 is not typical, light weight and thin bladestock.

almost 6oz,i call that pretty heavy. Though i have tougher weight standards my cut off is just over 4oz, i wear gym shorts for work and pretty often anyway so i like a knife that doesnt twist around in the pocket and doest feel too heavy in the pocket.

Ti is catered also because it is more exotic. but seriously medford and a few other makers in the $400-$500 range make some silly overbuilt shit. and that blade stock is so fucking thick its just meh

So I took my hunter safety course today and we needed a knife for the survival pack

I just went to cabellas and got a Buck 119 for like $50 ($20 off)

Could I have done better? My wife thinks its ugly but I love it and think it is down right sexy.

Also, would it be too much for an edc?
>>
>>32202714
You did good, only real way you could've done better was if you spent more money. That's a classic model from a classic manufacturer.
>>
>>32202714
They're a great hunting knife, not the best survival knife. Hallow ground and won't stand up to as much abuse as some other grinds will. Selkirk by buck would have done better for that sticking with buck. For survival knives if you can only have one, most bushcraft knives will do the trick, scandi grind with a comfy handle. I keep my Ontario pilots knife and a victorinox in my bag.

102 woodsman for edc i found is a good length. 119 is a bit overkill.

But that's just like, my opinion man.

So the Lionsteel I ordered on Cyber Monday came today... only problem is, my dog found it before I did, and when I walked out the front door I followed a trail of cardboard until eventually finding my knife lying on the lawn.

On the bright side, though, I was planning on wrapping this thing up and not opening it until Christmas, but since my dog did me the favor of opening it, I got to play with it for a few minutes. It seems Corgi teeth don't do much to titanium and G10 (and don't worry, I already made sure it didn't hurt him either). The knife itself seems really nice, perfect machining and finishing all around and it's shockingly slim and light. Flip action is great too, it's got a really stiff detent and I dunno what the people who say it doesn't flip are smoking. The lockbar is a bit stiff and sticky but improved noticeably after a dozen flips or so, so I think it'll iron itself out by the time I get bored of playing with it on Christmas Day.

The chisel grind is unreal, the steel is excellent, the serrations mean you can split 2x4s by wiggling the fucking thing. You can baton and strip timber very quickly. It has a nearly full tang with a strike cap. I cant find fault as a survival knife yet. I just need a Hultafors style combo sheath, then that plus a cheap SVK will do every job imaginable.

I make knives, as a hobby. Before then, I thought $200 was too much for a knife. Now I think it's not enough, knowing how much time and labor is involved.

>I dong give a flyin fuck about muh geometries
You say that, but it's not true. Geometry is what cuts, and that's what a knife is for.

So I'm moving to Massachusetts and a few of my knives I'm unsure of their legality there, pic related. The law on knives seems like a giant run on sentence.
1. Double edged dagger
2. Just looks scary, but I don't know that it is specifically illegal
3. Giant novelty stiletto. They specify stilettos, but this is comically large.
4. Has an unsual lock that allows very quick opening and gravity opening
5. Switchblade, I know that one is illegal to carry.
6. Double edged balde
7. Concealed locking blade in a necklace
I'll ask again in the QTDDTOTT if this is not the appropriate place for such discussions.

some have wood, some are all metal, and some have plastic. These are just the ones I'm questioning if I'd get into legal shit for having, considering mass hates freedom. What do you expect a folder to made of?
These are some of my nicer ones. Most of my knives I got from boy scout camp, gifts, or inherited from my dad who had a lot of budk quality stuff, hence quadra-blade (That actually seperates into two double ended knives) and comically large stiletto.

I really like my Böker Exskelibur. It was sharp out of the box, fits in my hand just right and I love the way it looks. I take it pretty much everywhere I go. It isn't assisted opening, but the blade opens very smoothly. You might not like that it lacks a safety, but I've never had a problem with it. Hell, I shoot a Glock and a Ruger LCR so I should be used to that by now. Overall, I'd recommend it for EDC.
>>

>>32212495
I hate safeties on knives. The safety on my Flash II and Kershaw Leek are tolerable because they are out of the way little switches and do no automatically engage.

That Boker is really nice looking. Not assisted opening, but I really like it.

>>32212515
Cheers.
>>
>>32212239
>Something similar to the Kershaw Skyline, but assisted opening.

Holy shit, I feel like a retard right now. I've always thought the Skyline was AO and never bought one because of that.

Anyway, it's surprisingly hard to come up with an assisted knife that matches your budget and specs. Anon's Barrage is probably the best bet. The only other thing I can think of that might work is the Kershaw Knockout, but it's kinda chunky.

Personally, though, I think I'd just get the Skyline or something if I were in your situation. I've owned a few assisted knives and I'm not a fan. A decent flipper is just as fast and I hate fighting spring resistance when closing my knife, plus assisted knives are a pain in the ass to disassemble for maintenance and add a system that can fail. That's just my preference, though.
>>
>>32212696
I just got a Skyline and really like it. The flipper design is growing on me, but AO is fun.

You can't beat the Skyline for $40. I'm willing to go up to $100, I'm just not ready to part with the money yet.

I guess I want a cross between a Kershaw Leek and a Skyline. The Leek is so close, but the blade shape is fucking stupid.

Leek is retarded easy to sharpen though.

Can fans of AO knives explain the appeal to me?
I've always used manuals, and when I try out AOs I really don't like having to fight the spring when putting the blade back. And the manuals I have are on ball bearing, so they're smooth enough for the speed difference to be negligible.
>>
>>32212955
I don't really get it either. A flipper doesn't have to be BB either, I have a base-model CRKT M-16 that I found in a field and cleaned up, and it flips faster than any AO I've ever tried.

I think manufacturers like AO because it can cover up for a bad action - I had a Cryo that worked fine AO, but when I took the SpeedSafe out it had by far the worst action I've ever felt on a knife - but that's not something that makes me want to buy one.

I think AOs feel really cool if you've never used a good flipper before, but once you have, AO feels pointless.
>>
>>32212955
>he manuals I have are on ball bearing
There you go. Springs are a poorfag's ball bearing.

AO are quick and some losers like me can't guy auto knives where they live.

>>

this is the best explaination, they are cool at first and not a lot of money but as soon as you get into nicer knives they loose their charm right away

i really dont get the bm ao, i like a few of them but im not spending $170 on a AO
>>
>>32213060
I'm surprised at how smooth CRKT's m-1whatever line is out of the box. Stupidly good.

>>32212955
I'm with you. It's mostly because people who are into them are usually just getting into knives, and think they're cool/better, when they're really not. I can understand maybe with thumb studs, but on a flipper shit's just pointless. Both manual thumb studs and flippers are faster and more reliable than their assisted counterparts, provided you know how to use them.
>>
>>32213083

Wish Benchmade would pull their shit together on tolerances and maybe lower their prices. They make some sexy knives but they often aren't worth the money due to the low grade materials and you're basically paying for the name, even though their tolerances have hit an all time low recently. Really liking the Contego and I feel like it's the only fairly decently price Benchmade knife right now but I'm not gonna pay $180 just to have an issue with the F&F and have to send it back. Heard too many stories recently all across the knife forums complaining of this.

>>32214339
I can't legally conceal a fixed blade knife where I live, but I can carry any folder I want as long as it's not an auto, except in a couple of nearby cities where there's a 3" limit. I carry a 3" folder just to be safe, since I often end up in unexpected areas in the course of my daily business.

Folders are just easier in the pocket, too.

There's also a psychological factor kind of thing, too. Pull out a fixed blade with a 3" blade and people freak out and think you're a psychopath, do the same with a reasonably-styled 3" folder and they just think you're a little weird at worst.

As far as I know, factory Spyderco edges on their US made models are a coarse edge applied with a liquid cooled computer controlled belt grinder and then buffed by the same. They tend to end up as a mix between a toothy and highly polished apex depending on how long the buffing is done for.

I'll see if I can dig up a picture of a factory PM2 edge under a microscope for you to show you what I mean.
