Take is as you will as I don't have a source. But a story I was told when I was younger was there was a point in time where they would shoot half their clip and then throw an empty one at the ground/rocks to force them to move out of cover/move into the open to fire.

If the stereotype is true, it turned into an advantage at one point

That's not how you spell AK. Also, you can top off a garand with single rounds.

Uh, Garand takes about two seconds to grab a clip and half a second to feed it ready to fire. 5 seconds is accounting for battle nerves.
In many cases however battle nerves assisted in firing, as the body often reverts to a very instinctive, much less thought provoking method of operation when it's fighting for its life.
Muscle memory is incredibly strong.
>>
>someone who has never been in a military engagement

If you can hear anything other than a sharp buzzing or static sound during a significant enemy contact let the action of a firearm... you are a superhuman. I had a mortar go off about 30 yards from me and a M240B empty a belt a few feet away from my head. Everything sounded like it was underwater for months. Even now, years later it sounds like tiny men are ice skating in my head. Most of our communication were done by basic hand gestures and facial expressions during combat.

I can't even begin to imagine the ungodly noise entire artillery batteries of 8.8s, carpet bombings, MG42 fire, and entire divisions of infantry and mechanized units directly engaging eachother.
>>
>hiding in a machinegun nest, shooting your k98 carbine with your 6 other buddies at americans in the brush 80 yards across a field
>mg42 buzzing 10 feet from you, the concussion thumping your chest in a way that seems like you are underwater
>nazi bro decides to leave your firing line and head back 6 feet to launch a couple mortars
>despite the painful EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE and fuzzy white noise, somehow pick out the distinct ping of an empty garand ejecting a clip
>decide to jump out of protected entrenchment and rush the enemy force with single shot bolt rifle with 2 rounds in the mag because "lol hes outta ammo" and obviously you will catch him reloading behind a tree

That's a cool point you have, too bad it's wrong

Why the fuck do we have paratroopers? Oh yeah, to risk their collective asses in high risk situations. It's part of the game, man

Nah, let's just have them stay on the plane and sing kumbaya while it circles friendly air space, where nothing bad can fucking happen.

Also, find fucking rocks? First off, as stated earlier, they do not ping on rocks, that ping is the direct result of being ejected from the weapon. Secondly, you would have to fly over in daylight to see any such fucking rocks, which brings me back to my original point - it's fucking stupid to risk a plane to drop literal fuddlore.

Perhaps they should have created a device to mimic the sound of the ping. Maybe something spring-loaded that would actually eject a clip.

There could have been a hand-actuated version for troops, as well as an airdropped version that would make the ping upon impact with the ground.
>>
A) It's easier and faster to reload an M1 than almost any other contemporary rifle, even the box-mag semi autos.

B) The internal magazine was a (maybe unexpectedly) bonus feature. Other semi autos at the time were issued with 2-3 magazines if you were lucky. Whereas M1s were issued with neatly packaged ammo and distributed broadly.

3) Soldiers are deployed in groups, and covering fire is a thing.

4) Background noise, as mentioned ad nauseum.

5) Potential ROF for M1s was significantly higher with a skilled user than every other basic rifle in the war with the exception of the Lee Enfield, and that took training to use effectively.

6) Effective ROF is higher than others as well, since you don't need to take your eyes off the sights while the action cycles. Same with the Lee Enfield, which is why it was so much faster than similar rifles.

The Army had the Garand from the start, so it saw action from the first US involvement in North Africa. It was not seen in the early days of the Pacific campaign as it is notorious for the Marine Corps to be given the Army's leftovers. Early battles in the Pacific were fought with M1903s.

You bitch about this like you do the BAR. Both had draw backs, but both were used in a time when 5 shot bolt guns were GI. Or when bayonets were used way more extensively and mounted. Or when the enemy simply had knifes tied to bamboo or rocks. I'm sure some poor bastard was killed when he shot his last round and someone close rushed him. thus the fudd lore was born. Much like the M1 Carbine and its fudd lore, or the super accurate 1911 manstoppingpower (I actually do like 45 and 1911s but those sights suck)

It's call "Garand Thumb". Basically, the action locks forward automatically after a clip is insert in order to allow for faster reloads. You need to insert the clip a certain way and not linger your digits in the action or you can get a finger caught. Soldiers were trained to avoid that but it still happened.

Enblocs are a type of clip you dipshit. The Garand's magazine is integral in the gun itself and non-detachable. This one of the few cases were using the term clip is correct.
>>
>>32174853
you can't hear it ping in battle. I've spoken to many ww2 vets about this including my grandfather, never once did they say was it a problem in combat.
>>
>>32179929
A full clip releases the bolt to run forward.
You're supposed to put your right hand over the side of the gun, catching the charging handle with the bottom of your palm, and pushing the clip in with your thumb. Once the clip is in, you extract your thumb before moving your hand to let the bolt fly forward.

Most of our strength was thrown at Germany because it was thought that defeating Germany would defeat Japan. The troops in the Pacific during the start of the war were given the dreggs of our armories, this often included old springfields and other stopgap weapons we could scrounge up to give them

Patton was a good orator and soldier, but we was not a great general. He was responsible for many casualties during attacks on strategically insignificant objectives, and did not work well with others. The myth of Patton being a master general came about because he made people believe he was, not because he proved it in combat. He wasn't all talk though, he wasn't Mac Arthur.

All rifles with more than a single shot capacity have magazines. There are different types of magazines: we today are most family with detachable mags, but almost all military service rifles for the first half of the 20th century and many sporting rifles today used non-detachable magazines integral to the body of the weapon, with were only remove during disassembly. Read a book faggot.

>Broke through enemy lines the second he got permission to enact a plan he had already drawn up before even being told to draw up a plan to relieve soldiers at the Bulge.

He's straight out of a book, and made some mistakes, but every great general fucked up a couple times.

>To the disbelief of the other generals present, Patton replied that he could attack with two divisions within 48 hours. Unknown to the other officers present, before he left Patton had ordered his staff to prepare three contingency plans for a northward turn in at least corps strength. By the time Eisenhower asked him how long it would take, the movement was already underway.

Fucking legendary.
