Former recon/intel here.

Short answer is yes.

The long answer:

It varies depending on your MOS, specialized groups like your general EOD, artillery, scouting and recon, as well as the special units like the 501st (troopers trained by the clone commando 501st legion if the rumor is correct), the protectorate (personal guard of governor Nereus IIRC), as well as a few of the specialized units that even though I'm out the NDA applies (bomb chip at the base of the skull... need to get that looked at) and can't mention them all generally got the better equipment, and more useful tools.

for example the recon team I was in, we ditched blasters almost entirely for slug throwers because we could suppress them and not leave a bright glowing tracer back to our position.

Generally speaking your run of the mill infantry soldier will have very basic ballistic plates, and an energy dissipater weave in their underlayer, unless someone's shooting a really hot blaster bolt (or one of those bowcasters, lovely weapon, never got to use one as much as I really wanted to) a guy'll generally get knocked out after a shot or two to the chest and wake up in medical and have to piss sitting down for a while, basicchemical scrubbers in the helmet filters, stuff like that.

EOD by comparison is running around in inertial dampened armor with plates that are just a shade shy of being rated for orbital re-entry.


However, that's old empire stuff. First order, for all intents everyone but squad commanders are in light armor with almost no energy dispersal weave, or temperature regulation systems, and only basic particle filters in the helmets. I mean sure they might survive a glancing hit from a blaster, but they'll wake up with a twitch if they're lucky. Their unit leaders are in well maintained infantry gear from the before the empire's fall.

So, repulsorlifts, treads, or legs? What is the advantage of each, and which do you tankmen prefer?

Personally, this may be just my experience from my single term as a tank driver in the Imperial Army and commanding a tank in the Onderonian militia, but I prefer treads. Legs can be shot out from under you, and repulsorlifts are unreliable.

Well, each have their advantage. Treads are great for the reasons you stated. But rough terrain can slow them down or flat out stop them. Repulsorlifts come in nice for that, but regardless of the terrain, they can have trouble stopping from time to time, what with no friction between the tank and the ground. Legs can also handle rough terrain like repulsorlifts, but they can be slower. But on the up side, with a good cable tanks with legs can scale cliffs if need be. Which is something you can't possibly do with treads or repulsorlifts.

So I guess it kinds boils down to where you're stationed/assigned and what works best there.
