The AMD is cool, but it is aesthetically garbage, and people that buy AK's overwhelmingly hate wire stocks, so when you're deciding on which variant to buy, it's no surprise that there are plenty of M70 under folders and AMD's out there. Also, their reputation isn't the best since so few people have bothered to buy them, and word of mouth really matters in the gun industry (the CZ75 explosion in popularity, for example).

It's a fine gun, I have one with a real butt stock, and have no complaints, but it's just not as "iconic" or appealing as my DDI with a railed gas tube, beautiful wooden stock, and a muzzle brake that doesn't set off car alarms

I like it because it is ugly. I have the 16" barrel and removed the HUUUGE muzzle break and put on a common AK slant break. Kicks harder now. Its ugliness is its cool factor. I had that guy online put a wire cheek rest on the wire stock but he put it slightly crooked.

Because there are a ton of parts kits out there for them and a company finally realized they can buy up the cheap parts kits and use them in combination with regular AK parts. The AMD-63s are pretty correct as far as it goes, but the AMD-65s are not anything like an actual AMD-65.

The AMD-65's plastic grips have a flare out on the end so when rocking the magazine in and out it can get extremely annoying. A lot of people sand that part off for that very reason. The wood grips are a little bit better, but still aren't great.

A shorter barrel in combination with a particularly boisterous compensator, standing next to one is a bit like standing next to an AKs-74u build when it's shooting, a lot louder than you expect.

For this reason, people have used the AMD brake as a purposeful loudener for novelty guns, one guy put one on his Obrezed 91/30, THAT is loud.

Pic related is a double length one (I don't know if it's welded from two or made from the ground up), it would be extra special loud, especially on an SBR.
