It's not about the caliber. It's about the gun and the shooter. And the quality of ammo.

I'll put it this way, I own a shitty phoenix arms hp22a that has been through thousands of rounds and the only time i ever had an issue was with cheap shit. CCI goes bang every time and ive yet to have a single failure. So i'd trust that gun and ammo combo to do what I need anytime...yes even for self defense.

Whereas i've also seen (and fired) some cheap 1911's that jam and misfire ALL THE FUCKING TIME. 45 or not im not putting my faith in such a gun.

This doesn't mean that I recommend 22lr over 45acp mind you BUT before caliber becomes a concern you would do well to buy a good fucking gun and good quality ammo for it.

Caliber is pretty irrelevant...just ask Bella Twin.

so yeah in summation:
1. buy a decent quality gun. Price is not important it just needs to work.
2.Buy quality ammo for said gun.
3.practice putting bullets exactly where you want them to go. Git gud nigga.
4. CALIBER IS NOT THAT FUCKING IMPORTANT.

Well self-defense or lethality is the question, you could probably use an air rifle for self-defense if push came to shove but I'd imagine the bare minimum for lethality would be .38 special or .380.

However asfar as the BEST caliber is concerned here goes...for a revolver a 44mag is the best as far as killing and stopping.For a semi-auto than 10mm is best choice.

The smallest you should consider is of course 22lr...it's shockingly lethal, however it's ability to "stop" an attacker is questionable (though it still works most of the time). On the other hand its incredibly low recoil makes follow ups shots simple (and anything worth shooting is worth shooting several times...you never shoot just once dumbass) and its low price affords a tremendous amount of practice.

As faras a recommendation is concerned, i'd personally pick something in between.

any of those will work fine. Go for somethingpowerful enough to do more damage than a 22lr but with as little recoil as possible for easier follow up shots. It's not about how big/powerful your bullet is, it's about where you shoot them and how many times.

What you lose in caliber you make up with the fact that it's ridiculously easy to land multiple follow up shots with a .22 rifle. Depends how determined the other side is. If it's just your average homebreaker/mugger a .22 is sufficient, as they don't want to get shot or die for the cause.
Against an enraged and drugged-up opponent you really want something larger than a pistol, but a .380 ACP/9mm Mak seems to be the accepted minimum.
An interesting note on this point is that .32 ACP and 7.63 Bordchart were the standard pistol cartridges for many European nations going into WW1, where the opponents were expected to be civilized people. However, the Brits and Americans, who had fought ahainst drugged up savages went with .455 and .45 ACP respectively.
