discuss which is the greatest multipurpose military helicopter and why it is the wildcat
>>32107307
Is that the one with no missiles? If one of it's purposes is being fucking useless then yeah great work Brits.
>>32107440
>implying any helicopter launched missile could get within firing range of any modern ship
>>32107307
>wildcat
That's a lot of mistakes in word "Mi-8".

>no missiles
Top cuck! Why do the British even bother!
>>32108317
Romeo master race.
>>32108366
How can the British even compete?
>>32107611
Sea Skua & Venom have a 30kg warhead subsonic missile. They are intended for <1000 t vessels, which generally don't have 25km+ air defence systems.
>>32107440
>>32108317
But it has missiles you communist fuck.
>>32107440
They have missiles. Just the missiles that the UK wants to use on them, aren't ready yet.
Korea's already carry SPIKE NLOS
Lynx/Wildcat is still kind of a shit multi-role helicopter though. It's too small to be useful for most utility roles and the newer ones are kind of heavy for their size because of the all the EO and DAS equipment.
UH-1Y seems more suitable
>>32107307
No it's not. It's just slightly bigger than a jet ranger yet has similar capacity. Is it a great ASW helo? Yes, but even the RN had the bigger merlin for things that the wildcats (or its predacessor) are too short-legged for
>>32107982
Nope. It can't operate in high altitude.
Mi-8/17 is used more as a general transport helo. The three ton truck of the helicopter world, if you will
For me the greatest multipurpose helicopter got to be pic related. It can be used for general utility purpose, SAR,CSAR, ASW, ASuW (bigger compartment as well as larger power generation enables it to carry and operates sonar buoy). You can't get more multipurpose than that
Black hawk is a close second. It has smaller capacity than Puma (and its derivatives/successor) but could also do wide range of tasks
>>32107307
Idk shit about helicopters but I want to say a black hawk
>>32111206
I'd also would like to add that unlike its contemporary of the same era, Puma's general design continued to be used and updated throughout the years for 50 years. The US already replaced its huey with blackhawk (with only USMC remained as significant operators due to logistical purposes) while Russia is going to replace its Mi-8/17 fleet with Mi-38 (despite Mi-8 design being more recent than Puma by 10 years). Others are already doing so with Merlin and NH-90/
Wildcat is more of a cost-saving program on already existing craft, the airframe is limited in range, and further upgrade packages due to weight etc. The Brits long since wanted to replace it. All it got going for now is it has proper maneuverability, which is cool for airshows.
>>32111736
>The Brits long since wanted to replace it
The Brits only just bought Wildcat. It's replacement for the older Lynx helicopter that it is based upon.
True enough that the Army would probably rather something else other than Lynx/Wildcat. It's mainly the Navy that want a small helicopter that can carry missiles, torpedoes or a small group of people, and the government want to keep Westland (or whatever it's called now - Leonardo?) in business in the UK.
>>32111736
>implying the brits would swap Lynx/wildcats for NH-90
Top kek
>>32111180
The leaf bought this shit and hated it with a passion
>>32111736
Except it kind of turns out that running a mixed light & medium naval helicopter fleet (with the Merlin) has managed to avoid the dumpster fire that is the NH-90.
>>32107307
Wrong it's this bad boy
>>32107307
That's one ugly mother fucker.
>>32112136
We already have Bell 412s in the UK too but they're only used for training in the UK (training aircraft are run by PFI rather than owned by the armed forces) and IIRC there are a couple of additional ones used by the RAF for SAR at our base in Cyprus.
The Army Air Corps also had a couple of Bell 212s for use in Brunei and Belize. But I think they might have retired them.
UH-1Y has better engines, gearbox and rotors for flying hot and high than the older Bell 212 and 412 Twin Hueys though
>>32107307
>wildcat
Funny way to say Lynx.
