Want to buy my brother a good survival knife for Christmas. I'm leaning toward pic related atm. Cold Steel SRK.

Also considering: ESEE 6, Kabar Becker BK2, Buck 119

Anyone have experience with these knives or other similar recommendations? I'd rather keep it under about $100.
>>
>>32106931
SOG seal pup elite with kydex sheath. It's a good knoife m8
>>
ESEE is the best built knife of the list.
>>
>>32106931
Get a Becker bk7 or bk10 over the bk2

The srk is fine too, the sheath on it and esee will be the better stock sheaths

If I were to get an esee it would be the cm6 but that is around 130 lasting checked
>>
>>32106953
Looks pretty good. My main concern is the blade length. It's a little on the shorter side if I want this to be useful for batoning, but so are some of the others on my list. But I'll keep it in mind, thanks.
>>
>>32106931

Bk2 is just a giant sharpen brick. Esee 6 us noce. Bk 7/9 is also another popular one too.
>>
>>32106931
I bought my SRK on camp Victory in 2004. I still have it after abusing it like a $2.00 flip hooker. It is ridiculously tough, even though it completely lacks finesse.

If you want to baton logs, etc, it is the right knife.
>>
>>32106953
I've used this knife on several deployment. pretty good, keeps a decent edge and well balanced.
>>
>>32106931
Becker bk2
>>
>>32106931
Becker bk9 for a pure bushcraft knife
Becker bk2 is ok but I do not like the clip point for batting

I am actually just ordered a bk2 to replace my 7...
>>
>>32107815
Bk7 is ok*

Get him a Shrade
Survival implies bushcraft first and knife fighting second
Most Shrades were designed for bushcraft

If you don't have a gun you have to fight with something

SOG is commie Chinese shit. Get something made in the USA with a lifetime guarantee (i.e. this Benchmade Survival Knife). Well worth the cash
>>
>bk2
Might as well give him a prybar instead. A knife main purpose is to cut things, be a good brother and buy him something that excels at it.
>>
>>32108032
I've got an OLD benchmade CSKII and I'm looking into a newer generation fixed blade. Benchmade is top quality.
>>
Get a tops bushcraft instead. Only knife you'll need imho. Except for Edc but get a folder for that

Esees are good. You could check the Ontario rat or rtak series as well. Falkniven aren't bad, and you should check out Mora's. All depends on what size, steel, grip and all that good stuff.
>>
>>32108022

Better than fisticuffs? Yes, you're less likely to be injured if you use a knife, but not by much.

Also, consider the escalation of force. That chart implies that force was met with the appropriate counter-force (and the thread of death presumably met with lethal force), so those injured who "used physical force" probably received physical force as an injury.

Those injured while using a knife probably received knife-related wounds from their aggressors.

It all depends on what weapon the aggressor is using, but if I lived in Strangeworld and didn't have my CC, and some dindu drew a knife on me, I'd probably just run instead of drawing my own knife. 30% chance to get maimed to all hell doesn't seem like a great way to spend an afternoon.
>>
>>32108032
That is one pretty knife.
>>
>>32106931
I got the srk in the fancy something "3" steel on amazon from a third party that was selling it for like $90 instead of its 300 or whatever

pretty good
>>
>>32109067
yuh, but playing devils advocate, if you ran yourself up a deadend and got caught up, I bet you'd be damn glad to have a knife to draw in return.
>>
>>32106931

Fällkniven A1 is superior to those as it comes for the purpose you list

Get one for that money on black friday
>>
On my second SRK. First one was stolen. I love them.
>>
>>32106931

I have the SRK.

It's so cheap that I don't mind using it for tasks that would mar the finish of a more expensive blade.

Only real problem with it is that the friction lock of the sheath has worn a gouge into the softer rubber of the handle over time.
>>
>>32110075
3v, awesome steel but RRP is never retail price, not sure why people quotes manufacturers RRP for anything.

OP here. So uh, what knife is this?
>>
>>32111377
I've been looking at that knife but I haven't found it for anywhere less than 150% of my preferred cost. Do you know of somewhere to get it cheaply?
>>
>>32106931
Go with the bk2

It's heavy enough to get the chopping/battoning tasks done but small enough to not be too cumbersome.

If you were going to get him 2 knifes I would suggest something else, like a bk 9 for "big work" and then maybe a bk 10/11/14 or smaller for little things.
>>
>>32109067
Since OP is talking about batoning and shit, I'd say that he's planning to use it as an outdoor knife mostly, I don't think he means the knife will be used as a defense weapon against a human aggressor but most likely against some rabid animal that doesn't fuck off when it hears your primal roar.
>>
>>32106931
if you want to go all out buy a fällkniven

they are pricey but thats for a good reason

https://www.fallkniven.com/en/kniv-kategori/slidknivar/overlevnadsknivar/
>>
>>32112476
He's talking out his arse, entry Fallkniven fixed start at around $120 at best and that's with the shit sheath. Get the Esee 4 with the updated handle or an Ontario Rat 5 for a bit less, the SRK in 3V is a beast but it's out of your desired budget.
>>
>>32112905
Refer to >>32112476

Although considering the time scale and quality of these knives I am considering the A1. This should last essentially forever, right?
>>
>>32112837
This is correct. It's basically for bushcraft. No intention at all for combat.
>>
>>32113646
For the cost of an A1 you could buy your mate a custom and push come to shove, it's VG-10, the shit isn't designed to be beat on.

I live in the Colorado mountains and used to carry an axe and knife. Now I carry one of these.
I prefer a synthetic handle and actually prefer the modern non-Gurkha style blade (wider and straighter) it works as a blade, an axes, and a shovel. It's wise to gift one of these with oil and a stone.

Eickhorn km2000 is the only knife you will ever need. German quality will last a lifetime. Look up the tests of this knife. Sadly it is $150-200 but if you love your brother that much it is the way to go

You have to wonder if all these mallninjas even use their knives for bushcraft or just stare at them all day because half of the suggested things fall completely out of reality for what a survival knife entails.

why dont you buy a new soldier from victorinox the are Knife multitool or are the a meme?
>>
Not on your list, but check out the Doug Ritter RSK MK2. It's a nice all arounder, even though the "adjustable weights" are pretty gimmicky.

I think some people call it the Becker BK12
>>
>>32106931
For your money's worth go with a Becker. Any of them really

>>
>>32106931
I've had an original Camillus Pilot Survival Knife since the mid 1980s. It's a good choice. That SRK is similar in geometry, but I don't know about Cold Steel beyond their machetes and Bushman knives. The mini-Bushman is an amazing tool.
>>
>>32107770

Would be cheaper to just buy him a brick, and just as useful, if not more

Anyone have any experience with Tops Knives? They seem to have a couple knives that fit OP's bill, at around the same price point when it's bought via amazon.

OP here. I'm sorry you paid that much for that toy.
>>
>>32122167
They are decent for what they are, thick slabs of tool steel with basic handles tacked on for user comfort.
Can't really go wrong with a simplistic blade of 1095 at a medium hard heat treat.

Have you peeked at the Ritter RSK MK2?

Like others have said , won't be dissapointed.

They look very quality but I'm not sure about the one side bevel. It just intuitively feels wrong, although I can't think of a good reason why.

It's also double my price range, and for that money it would be hard to justify a custom job with the grewrer risk of a small operation over just getting a Fallkniven A1 or something.
