It's separation of responsibilities. It's the entire reason our society is so advanced today, people can do just one thing for their entire lives and leave everything to other people. People don't have to do shit for themselves nowadays aside from showering and driving to work, and doing their job. Soon people won't have to drive to work because we'll have cars that do it for us. Just like we have food packaged for us that requires almost no preparation.

The only reason for people to DIY is because they have an interest in it, they can do it better than a machine, or to save money. The advantages of doing things yourself are less tangible than having other people do stuff for you.

You're not going to remove metal with untreated leather. You will need to get the edge pretty much to where you want it first and then strop. And without compound, yeah.... it's going to take a while. But in a pinch with a carbon blade, you can use just about anything to sharpen it. You can use the edge of a car window and the side of a boot sole and get a knife razor sharp if you need to. You just need technique and time.
