The char is a super cool looking tank, extremely warhammer 40k with its extra hull mounted gun and outdated ww1 slab sides.
Not sure if it is actually any good, if i recall it has weird armor, it's 14mm all the way around evenly for protection in no man's land.
The only pictures of them in theater I've seen are blown up ones in France with kits standing on them.

>>32088718
By all means, it was an adequate heavy tank, capable of taking out the Panzer IV and shrugging off anything less than it - most of the issues of the B1 were in doctrine.
MAS-36 with the weird, forward leaning bolt handle. That French engineering tho.
Driving that thing along with the somua in world War 2 online was the shit.
Damn good tank btw, heard the problem lay in french armor doctrine in general. Beat the krautz shit that's for sure.

The Model 1728 Infantry Mousqet, commonly referred to as the " St Etienne." lighter and marginally more accurate than the British Brown Bess Long-Land patterns, these muskets were commonly looted from dead Frenchmen by the British, especially the Grenadiers who had enough weight of their own to carry without having to worry about the 13 pound Bess.
Its unfair to say the French are a bunch of surrender monkeys. From going toe-to-toe with their (arguably) most powerful neighbor for almost their entire modern history, to stopping the Germans cold in WWI, not to mention Napoleon, the French have a strong warrior history.
And when their government failed them, the citizens took up the mantle. Pic related.
Not to mention that the blue uniforms and Adrian helmets were aesthetic as fuck.
>>32088023
The Char B1 Bis was a very good tank, possibly the best early WW2 - that's one of the reasons why the Battle of France was so humiliating. The only thing it lacked was radios and good doctrine, like De Gaulle proposed. By far the most casualties, if all were from Germans artillery. There was one example at Stonne where one Char B1 bis (pic related) commanded by Captain Billotte managed to singlehandedly take out 12 Panzers despite being hit 120 times from the German tanks. However it was eventually heavily damaged by an 88 and had to fall back due to lack of support. A result of poor communication.
>>32089126
Thanks anon
Also worth mentionning the french 47mm had superior penetration compared to the early german 75mm.
A common saying in the french army about the battle of France is that both sides had the same amount of tanks except the germans did use them in 3 groups of 1000 tanks, and the french in 1000 groups of 3 tanks.
>>32088718
A huge issue with it was the one-man turret. It's tough to track a target, load your gun, and shoot all on your own, turns out.

Some tidbits about the B1 Bis in combat.
>On May 16, around 17h00, the B1bis "Riquewihr" (lieutenant Doumecq) from the 49e BCC attacked towards Stonne and encountered a German infantry column, which fired at the tank with infantry weapons including antitank rifles, without effect. The B1bis crushed some German troops and pushed into the town defended by the Schützen Regiment 64. When the soldiers saw the bloody tracks of the tank they fled in panic and abandoned Stonne which remained unoccupied for the night. After that action Doumecq was nicknamed 'the butcher of Stonne' by his comrades. The B1bis "Riquewihr" will be the last one of the 3e DCR, abandoned on June 18 north-east of Dijon.
>The battle on the Aisne River lasted from May 17 to the June 11. The 14e DI illustrated itself by resisting to all the German attacks and it even took some 800 German POWs. De Lattre requisitioned 3 replacement B1bis tanks from the 8e BCC (bataillon de chars de combat) ("Villers-Bretonneux", "Téméraire" and "Lunéville") under the command of sous-lieutenant Robert to defend the bridges in Rethel. After 5 days of combats (May 17-21, 1940) the area was still under French control and these 3 B1bis tanks had destroyed 20 tanks (including 5 Panzer IV), 9 armored cars, 12 motorcycles / side-cars, 10 cars and 16 trucks.
>On May 17, 1940, the B1bis "Mistral" and "Tunisie" from the 3/15e BCC (3rd company of the 15th tank battalion - 2e DCR) attacked the German troops at Landrecies, south of the Mormal Forest. Advancing between two columns of armored cars, light tanks (Panzer I and Panzer II) and probably armored personnal carriers (Sd.Kfz.251) they slaughtered 50-100 German AFVs in about 20 minutes.
1/2
>>32090946
>On May 28, during the battle of Abbeville, the B1bis "Jeanne d'Arc" from the 1/47e BCC (4e DCR) received more than 90 shells in 2 hours before being put out of combat. The attack starts at 17h00, east of Doudelainville. German AT guns fire on the "Jeanne d'Arc". Two German guns are quickly destroyed with the 75mm hull gun but one 3.7cm shell penetrates unluckily (or luckily, depends on the point of view) in the barrel of the hull gun and destroys it.
>The "Jeanne d'Arc" takes the command of the 1st company and moves through Huppy (were a German infantry battalion is destroyed), firing with its MGs on the German soldiers who are met. Moving on, the B1bis crosses the RN28 road south-west of Les Croisettes and heads towards hill 104, where it is engaged by numerous German guns including 8.8cm FlaK. The turret is penetrated by 2 heavy shells and is blocked, the gunsight and the episcopes are broken. The tank commander and the loader are WIA. Completely disarmed, the tank nonetheless charges the enemy. Several AT guns are crushed under the tracks and two vehicles are rammed and destroyed. Once the slaughter achieved the B1bis tank pulls back.
>Back at the level of Les Croisettes, an other shell (probably a 8.8cm shell) penetrates the fuel tank on the left side and put the tank on fire. The crew bails out and hides in the hedges, avoiding all the German patrols. During the night the crew returned safely to the French lines.
No matter the country, the combination of strong armor versus inadequate AT capabilities will always result in the same kind of stories (Matilda, KV-1, Tiger and so on).
>>32088893
Physically yes, the tank could take on panzer 4s. But a 37 mm could penetrate its armor up to a kilometer away.
But bigger problem with the char was its 1 man turret, reliability, often lack of communication, and low velocity howitzer.
That lack of communication was the biggest killer, the Germans didn't need to have 1v1 battles, they just called in the luftwaffe or otherwise.
Also the crew, not to bring up surrender memes, but France as a nation was tired of war.

>But a 37 mm could penetrate its armor up to a kilometer away.
U w0t?
But seriously, the B1 worst problem was fuel consuption. The french didn't have jerrycans at all, fuel trucks were often unavailable, and most of the crews didn't knew about the tank's secondary fuel tank. A fuel trailer was designed (the B1 has a towing hook at the rear) but never implemented.
On a sidenote, the mechanist usually acted as a loader for the 47mm.
Ps: How is having a 75mm an issue?
>>32092505
how would the crews not know about the secondary fuel tank, that seems like a pretty important thing to be told about the tank, was training really that poor?

French love rifle grenades. As a result the MAS 49/56 and the FAMAS have excellent grenade sights and other associated systems, as well as a very nice range of available grenades.
>>32092642
Dunno, maybe the manufacturer forgot to tell the army about it, or the manuals were incomplete.
It was just a small valve in a remote corner of the tank that gave you a few kilometers worth in an emergency. Not something you'd use everyday.
Training was good for the B1 crews, but it was a very complex tank so they may have lacked studying time on some areas, too.

They could have used some hunting or herding breed like a Braque or a Beauceron. That thing is a disgrace.
>>32091480
They were a part of the Maginot line and did their job very well, guarded by alpine troops
However, and that's a blow to the concept of fortifications, the french alpine troops also did constant harrassing on the italians, at some points even managing an assault on an italian fort equipped with 105mm guns with 280mm mortars they bring up by hand on a position where they were unattainable by the italian artillery.
There were several operations of this kind over the 1940 campaign, the mix of these with a very well thought out fort placement and operation, against poorly motivated and equipped troops, meant the french alpine fortifications, part of the Maginot line, virtually did not lost the war.
The guys inside still had to surrender under the armistice though.

Hey, sexy lady!
>>32093973
>However, and that's a blow to the concept of fortifications,
Bullshit. That proves that fortifications work damn well. Of course raids were launched to reduce the enemy's ability to combat those fortifications.
As a side note, any defense benefits from aggressive patrolling and raiding. It keeps the enemy at a distance, disrupts their attempts to build up the necessary concentration to force the issue, as well as providing reconnaissance on them and countering their reconnaissance efforts.
I hate this idea that somehow fortifications are worthless.

That's also the reason why they're using what's basically a modern-day version of the japanese knee mortar.
>>32089221
>Also worth mentionning the french 47mm had superior penetration compared to the early german 75mm.
The 75mm L/24 was never an anti-tank weapon. So no, it's not worth mentioning. You need to be comparing it to the German 37mm and 50mm calibers.
>>32094375
>You can bet your ass every motherfucker was scrambling to find resistance armbands as soon as the Germans had fucked off
Very true. Let us not forget how many French helped turn in Jews. Resistance was overstated, most citizens lived their lives as normal, many were even Nazi supporters.

The us army would have lost two guys and then called in arty and air support.
It pays to be well equipped.
Little known fact about the Algeria war: The french army build two massive walls, the Challe and Morice lines, near the tunisian border to prevent foreign fighters from coming in Algeria. Those included barbed wire, electified clotures and minefields for 500km, and one of the first operational use of ground surveillance radars that I'm aware of, by modified anti-aircraft artillery radars.
I find the "experimental" aspect of the Algeria war fascinating, especially the amazing amounts of psychological warfare deployed by both sides.
Like operation Mustache : Air drops of radio emitter completely missing the french outposts and falling into FLN hands. That are filled to the brim with TNT and explode when switched on.

>Let us not forget how many French helped turn in Jews.
Relative to the population, it was far, far less than the Dutch. Nobody ever talk about the Dutch for some reason. The French also had a shitload of Righteous among the Nations.
>Resistance was overstated, most citizens lived their lives as normal, many were even Nazi supporters.
My grandma says FUCK YOU. Most of the population was trying to feed itself, malnutrition was rampant (moreso among children) since Germany was litterally pillaging the country to fund its war effort and millions of men were prisoners of war. Some collaborated quite happily because "muh bolchevism must die" or "muh jews must die", other resisted, the majority simply wanted to survive.
And the Resistance may be overstated by many, but I see the opposite assesment more and more often (like you did). While it never could do what Tito and his men did in Yugoslavia for example, its work on D-day was commented by Eisenhower "to be worth at least five divisions". I will trust him on that.

That makes EVERY rifleman a grenadier. Not just one designated schmuck turn walking IED.
Add greater range because of a longer boost. Greater accuracy because of fin stabilization. Greater effect to any payload because the warhead diameter isn't limited by a barrel.... 40mm HE, 60mm HEAT and WP..... Etc.
>no more fill weight per gross weight tho. which means you can carry the same total amount of destructive power but takes up 4 times the space with rifle grenades.
or your rifle grenades are far and away more effective meaning using less per target..... like actually effective HEAT grenades versus laughable HEDP. HE rounds with a radius of 15m instead of 5m .... completely saturating a room or fighting position... one round not pouring in two or three.... see also more accurate.
>you can pretty much do the same with launcher nades.
