So, got a cool little Arisaka Type 38 carbine. The Cabelas i bought it from told me it fired 6.5x50, everywhere else i double checked also said this as well so i bought 2 boxes from Graf and Sons. Fed and ejected properly so i figured all was well. First shot went up in smoke (peppered my face with unspent gunpowder and a piece is also stuck in the white of my eye). Gun is fine, thankfully, and rather than go to an eye docter I'd rather find out with the fuck is up.

Upon further investigation; the bullet got stuck at the base of the barrel, when i tried feeding the bullet in from the muzzle the bullets dont even fit. Could this be a bad batch when the bullet was casted or could i have an oddly chambered rifle?
>>
>>32085572
possibly rechambered.
>>
>>32085572
Show bullet nose in the front of the barrel.
>>
Some fudd probably chambered it in a durr caliber
>>
>>32085588
Im going to bring a round to work tomorrow to measure and make sure its right. But really? To a smaller caliber? doesnt show any signs of it. And the numbers on the bolt and reciever are a match

I went to a friends house (this happened about an 2 hours ago, took pics beforehand) to have him try and remove the piece in my eye. Heres the bullet that got stuck though
>>
>>32085634
That doesn't look good. At least you got the bullet out, going backwards how far can you stick the bullet down the barrel?
>>
>>32085572
How do the chamber and bore look?
>>
>>32085647
It its very close. It stops just before the widest part of the actual bullet. you can see in the picture i posted last where it caught on the rifling.
>>
>>32085668
Aside from all the unspent gunpowder (why did it turn yellow?) it actually seems okay. The top of the reviever has gas ports and i think they might have saved the rifle. Also at work tomorrow im going to get in there and try and see if the initial bore was effected, but the bullet didnt make it far in
>>
>>32085701
That's odd, I do remember Graf and Sons put out a voluntary recall for their 7.7 Jap ammo, but I didn't think 6.5 was affected.

>It stops just before the widest part of the actual bullet.
It's supposed to do that. The lands of the rifling have to be a smaller diameter than the bore overall, otherwise they wouldn't be able to engage the bullet and set it spinning. If you can fit a bullet all the way into the muzzle that's a sign that either it was counter-bored or the rifling is worn-out.

Have you checked for bore obstructions? Sometimes people de-activate rifles by jamming a metal bar into the barrel and soldering it in place.

Another thing to do is to have a chamber cast done. This will tell you if your rifle has been re-chambered for another caliber or if the chamber is out-of-spec and no longer safe to shoot.
>>
>>32085777

Thank you, i didnt know that. Could it have just been a bad round or the fact that not enough powder ignited to force the bullet down the barrel? It was free of obstructions, and the bore looked great when i looked at it with the guy at Cabelas.
>>
>>32085836
Take it back to Cabelas. Show them the bullet. Explain it blew up in your face. Wear eyepatch for added effect. Demand they fix it or get you a safe one to shoot. Worst case you get a refund. Best case, you get a new rifle and free shit.

Also, would i be okay just leaving this in there? it doesnt really hurt or much, its more annoying than anything.
>>
>>32085836
That was a bad round. Looks like the primer only burnt the deterrant coating off and nothing ignited. Powder might have been wet or the primer could have been a dud.
Without pressure to expand the brass you will get blowby coming out of the action.

Not a bad idea, but i tend to be a pretty nice guy unless im intentionally fucked over. I am going back tomorrow to talk to the guy who sold it to me, were both pretty into historical shit and talk often in there.

>>
>>32085950
your eye will probably get infected and then youll really be fucked if you dont go to a doctor very soon
>>
>>32085950
Just stab yourself in the eye so you don't have to worry about whether or not you'll go blind.
>>
>>32085888
It "might" be ok, and probably will be. But that's your eye so don't take chances by leaving a foreign object in it.
You know how stupid and regretful you'd feel if you knew you were a very simple doctor visit from being not blind in one eye? But you didn't?
At least google/webmd it and see if someone else knows something.

getting shit out of your eye aint bad man. They give an eye drop that numbs it, wait a bit, then usually just flick or pick it out. over in seconds. As a welder i've gone through it a couple times. Get it done. it wont come out itself.

Can you detail more? What happened? You fired it and it exploded, or did you attempt to fire it, nothing happened, and you attempted to open the bolt and the cartridge exploded as you retracted the bolt?

I can't see fragments entering your fucking face if it blew up when you fired it and you have a picture of a rifle still intact. I think you unlocked a hangfire.
>>
>>32085888

Sweet Jesus, I thought the likes of grenades in the toilet, forest fires from napalm shotgun shells and swallowing gunpowder were over.

Also go to a doctor dummy. Don't use cost as an excuse either, you just bought an obscure gun and ammo you can afford the visit.

Also where was your eyepro? An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

>>
>>32085888
If you don't get it removed it WILL get infected. If you don't mind being blind in one eye(and possibly dying) leave it in.
>>
>>32085888
Medicalfag here. You must go to a doctor. The eye is a very sensitive organ. Your eyes are highly vascular so white blood cells and shit can get there but there is no lymph and the moisture of your eye allows bacteria to grow well. Also visible heavy metal embedded in your eye should be an obvious "get this removed" flag. If bacteria get to your cornea, where there is very little your body can do, you will get an ungodly infection.
>>
/doctor
and the approved cartridge(s) should be listed right on the barrel.

Everyone listen.

If you get a surplus rifle of questionable origin or hasn't had the chamber verified by a professional do this:

Get a few sandbags or a bench rest. Secure the rifle to the rest or hold it down with sandbags. Point in a safe direction. Make sure the chamber is empty. Loosely tie a string around the trigger. Load the gun. Get cover and or distance. Pull string.

This is good for checking old surplus ammo too. Check a few rounds.

How are the casings? Cracked? Bulging primer?

How is the gun? Any signs of cracking or abnormal barrel wear?

Or just be like op and end up getting shit dug out of your eye.
>>
>>32086778
You think you could sue Cabelas for saying the gun was chambered in the wrong caliber? They're assholes anyway.

This, Cabela's is a sack of shit. I bought a Mauser online because it was actually a decent price, but the retard who shipped it did so with the bolt installed. It showed up with a hole punched in the box from the bolt handle and the safety lever broken. Customer service was completely unresponsive and the one person I could get ahold of told me to ship it back to be "repaired". Any mongoloid can disassemble a Mauser bolt so I just replaced the lever with a $4 NOS part myself to avoid even more damage from shipping.

I bought a zastava 357 from Cabela's and after shooting it less than 50 rounds it broke. The spring in the cylinder locking piece was not allowing it to unlock. The gun guys decided to just take that spring out. No problem, right? Except for the timing always fucked and now the gun was a grenade waiting to take my booger hooks.

Doctor here

You NEED to get that removed, or you will loose sight in that eye.

Im 100% serious.

Go to the ER, inform them you got a bit of metal in your eye. they'll provide wash and will remove it. thats a fairly simple removal from the look of it, but its in a bad spot and the signs of irritation are apparent immediately.

Im at a eye specific ER right now. Went to a local one and it was too deep for them to get, so i had to go to the damn city at 11 at night. I do appreciate you guys urging me to go, definitely worth it. I was kind of treating it as a joke at first but i need both my eyes for the work i do. Fingers I can still afford to lose, but not an eye.
