Why do so many assault rifles have the charging handle on the right, when a right handed shooter can cock the gun quicker with a left hand? I mean, Germans got it right with MP-40/StG-44 already!

In some guns it's slightly less work to manufacture - mill the ejection port and charging handle at the same time. Other guns it's to keep the moving handle away from your face. In the AK ... I actually don't know, I'm guessing to keep the handle away from face since it wouldn't be any more difficult to stamp the receiver with a cutout on the left side for the handle and put the dustcover/selector on the left too
>>
>>32058428
Mall ninjas and shot timers didn't exist in the 50s. It just wasn't considered at the time.
>>
>>32058459
The bolt handle rides above the receiver on AKs, all that would need to change is the dust cover which is even easier.
>>
>>32058480
shit you're right, I meant dust cover not receiver.

In the case of the AK 47 it looks like they initially used their right hand for everything. My guess is they didn't feel like retooling and just worked around the rifle, it's not like they expected conscripts to be commandos.
>>
>>32058428
To protect the chamber from mud and other random shit from getting inside when going prone or falling down, especially so when taking cover from artillery. If the charging handle were on the left, it would be facing down when doing it naturally.

>when a right handed shooter can cock the gun quicker with a left hand?
It's literally just a few milliseconds difference. Doesn't matter, should rather put in a bolt release.

>>32058428
What is this gun
And why does it look like an ak
>>
>>32058428

so the fucking ejected bullets don't hit ya in your stupid face, OP.
>>
>>32058629
Google AK Alfa. It's basically AK-103 + ergonomics.
>>
>>32058662
Oh, and the shorter barrel version has old 45 degree gas block for some reason.
>>
>>32058550
This. Doctrine was different back then, they figured if you didn't have any ammo in the gun you don't need your hand on the grip to work the trigger. Sort of a holdover from bolt action days when you'd do all the loading/workindabolt with your right hand and the support hand would do just that, support.
>>
>>32058657
You can have the charging handle on the left and the ejection port on the right.
>>
>>32058428
because getting your right hand to the charging handle faster doesn't imply that you get your first shot off faster... because you have to move it back to the pistol grip in order to have access to the trigger.

There are some valid reasons to have a charging handle on the right, but speed of employment is not one of them.

>>
>>32058459
i read that it's a leftover from the mosin but dont know how true that is.
>>
>>32058428
I'm sure this applies to the ak variants the most, the charging handle on the right means that the uneducated conscript has to take his hand off the grip, away from the trigger, to charge the weapon. It reduces the odds of a ND.
>>
>>32058428
Bolt actions came first.
People are right handed. (inb4 gross motor control)
Physics says that you can keep a rifle relatively on target more easily the further out you support the rifle.
Also, Biomechanics says that rifles should have a slightly a slightly canted foregrip such that your left arm has a slight bend.

tl;dr
Yes, you can clear a fuck up faster with the bolt on the left, but you lose the gained time by having to bring the rifle back on target.

Then again, maybe I just have bitch wrists...
>>
>>32058771
>using left hand to cock/charge the rifle

You know that you can move your hand back to the trigger faster than you can bring a rifle back on target, right?
>>
>>32058550
if those guys had charging handles on the left they would have a charging handle poking them in the back
>>
>>32060831
do they not have left shoulders?
>>
>>32060871
then youve got the safety annoying you. having the left side flat is one of the aks greatest features in terms of ergonomics
>>
>>32060908
>left hand charging ak
>safety on right side

I'm not to sure about that...
>>
>>32060929
>>safety on right side
yes lets make it uncomforable for everyone
>>
>>32060948
What type of fucking alien hands do you have that you can operate the selector with your right hand on a standard ak?
>>
>>32058629
Looks very similar to Galil ACE for what it's worth
>>

It's literally jews who cucked Kalashnikov Concern to the US trademark (((refurbishing))) captured AKs from Israeli stock. I believe it's CAA or one of those doing it.
>>
>>32058428
1. Manufacture >>32058459.
2. For right-handed it is more convenient to do things with right hand.
3. Charging position when gun is held against shoulder with left hand around hanguard is much more steady and allows to generate more force on charging handle than tacticool AR position with gun hanging all its weight on wrist of the right hand.
>>
>>32061028
Me too dude

That's just another place for dirt to get in a fuck up the rifle anon.

>>
>>32062276
only that OP's specific rifle because they don't have a dust cover. Any properly designed rifle will be just as sealed with left or right side handles
>>
>>32058686
>Sort of a holdover from bolt action days when you'd do all the loading/workindabolt with your right hand
This is the most reasonable explanation yet. Most early semi autos tried really hard to emulate bolt action

>>
>>32065182
Only slightly more with left hand. Does that even matter? Any rifle will be wide-open with the charging handle back.
>>
>>32065378
Except you will have an extra place that is wide open on top of the bolt with a charging handle on the left side.
>>
>>32058428
>no dust cover
>more holes for debris
>plasticool
>all these "features" and no BHO or LRBHO

into the trash it goes
>>
all yall mothafuckers theories on the AK charging handle posistion are dumb as shit

its just the design of the gun. one hole. safety/dustcover combo. safety on, receiver is covered, safety off, ejecting rounds out the right. left handed charging handle? either a hole for dirt or cases ejecting into your face.
>>
>>32065515
also that all of these features are common aftermarket shit, yet ZERO DUSTCOVER and no BHO.

you can easily get a left hand charging handle for your AK and the classic simple modification of cutting a bolt holder slot into your dust cover, there are custom LRBHO shits, there are finger push mag release that is basically same shit as in this video, also easy to make the dustcover extended to use with finger/thumb and still have a dust cover for fucks sake.
>>
because when you sling the rifle on your back you don't have a small piece of metal digging into it
>>
>>32058428
Why don't people cock assault rifles with their right hand holding the handle with their left hand?

Kalashnikov's original prototype had the charging handle on the left hand side. It was a government driven decision to move it to the right for whatever retarded reasoning they had.
>>
>>32060829
>Letting go of the pistol grip ever
fag
>>
>>32065457
Yeah but how often is it open, 5 seconds while reloading (assuming reciprocating), a second while charging, a fraction of a second while firing (assuming reciprocating)?
>>
>>32065564
It would be the exact same thing on the left side, charging handle and safety/cover combo, ejection port stays on the right.

You all seem to be forgetting that rifles need to EJECT every time they fire, thus REQUIRING it to have a giant hole whenever you pull the charging handle back.
>>
>>32064200
>1PN58
>>
>>32066853
That's what I meant with
>Any rifle will be wide-open with the charging handle back.
A left side charging handle opens the rifle slightly more but not enough to worry about
>>
>>32058428

When you have the rifle slung, the left side of the rifle could snag on your gear/clothes. Also, because the ejection port is needed on the right it's easier to put the handle right there.
>>
>>32066500
This.
>>
>>32065776
youre forgetting the part where you put the mag in
>>
>>32066479
Cheaper to manufacture as another anon said earlier.
