So a coworker's friend died. The friend's wife decided to cash in on all his guns and called my coworker over to sell them off for her.
He offered to sell me a WW2 era Walther p38 pistol for $400, and I took him up on it.

Don't know much about this gun, but thought it was a reasonable deal on a piece of history. Any /k/ommandos have any insight on what I've picked up? Maybe year it was made, and whether it was likely issued during the war?
Can take more pics if needed.

Best I got from half assed googling is that it was produced in a facility that was overthrown by Russians. Don't know if that means it was used by Russian or German forces if at all.

Obligatory should I paint it to look like my favorite pony after I give it a good sandpaper scrubbing?

I guess the pony joke was taking it a little too far.

If you like it and have moneys, why not? If you're buying it as an investment, then get it appraised first.
>>

Not an investment. Just would like to know more about it. Looking through gunbroker says the "cyq" stamp puts it in the $700 price range.
No intention of selling it unless I somehow find myself severely hurting for money--in which case I have less important things to sell than guns.

Start here-

http://pistole38.nl/the-p38/ww2-variations

It'll tell you who made it, when, and where.

Check for matching serials on the 3 parts that are serialized- frame, slide, and barrel. The locking lug may also have a partial serial.

It's a fun gun, treat it well. Don't feed it anything heavier than 115 gr. Don't do bubba shit to it.
>>
As a collector of all things ww2, I say that's a really nice p 38. Does it have a holster? Also the little eagle next to j says 83 under it right? I have a waffen 655 under my lugers. As for the time it was made its a little difficult. I know with my luger it's the top of the gun where the year is. Btw. Awesome deal on the gun. Sorry about your coworkers friend though.

>>32045958
I will definitely ask around there. Thanks for the lead.
I don't have any plans on any work to do on it other than hit it with some oil and a toothbrush.

All serials, other than the magazine, match.

>>32046166
Unfortunately no holster. I think I pictured all the markings other than serials, though. I can double check when I het home.

Yeah, it's a tough break for the coworker's friend. The stories he was telling me sounded manly as fuck. They were both older guys, and the friend was an officer in the Army during Vietnam.
He asked me if I was interested in a S&W .38 snubnose that he was pretty sure the friend carried in Saigon. That seemed more sentimental value than anything else, so I had to pass.

As a show of appreciating the transactionn he threw in a .32 revolver with the words "SIDE KICK" engraved on the side. I think this was the best firearms transaction I ever had a part in.

Anon, I...
>>
>>32047019
I just checked, I am a faggot. I was so damn sure that bakelite grips were exclusive to the later P01.

>>32047019
I'm pretty sure the grips were always bakelite but were brown in WW2, switched to black post war.

OP you have a run of the mill imported P38 from the 80's to 90's. Parts may or may not be matched, looks like the grips are post war, the parts were made late in the war because of the low quality finish.

It's a shooter grade gun.
