Why hasn't anyone ever tried to make a LeMat chambered in a more modern cartridge like .38 Special or .357 Magnum with like a .410 underbarrel? I would buy like 3.
>>
>>32042313
Because unless the shotgun barrel could also fire .45 colt or something, it would be classified as a short-barreled shotgun.

>Because unless the shotgun barrel could also fire .45 colt or something, it would be classified as a short-barreled shotgun.

Chamber it in .410/.45LC like the Taurus Judge. Done.

I remember watching a report on the controversy on Al Jazeera, not gonna lie it kinda made my day

>After being promoted to lieutenant general, Mattis took command of Marine Corps Combat Development Command. On February 1, 2005, speaking ad libitum at a forum in San Diego, he said "You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn't wear a veil. You know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway. So it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them. Actually, it's a lot of fun to fight. You know, it's a hell of a hoot. It's fun to shoot some people. I'll be right upfront with you, I like brawling." Mattis's remarks sparked controversy and General Michael Hagee, Commandant of the Marine Corps, issued a statement suggesting that Mattis should have chosen his words more carefully, but would not be disciplined.

Given the .32 size of the original LeMat maybe .327 Magnum would be a better option, and let you get more shots for a given cylinder size.
>nine shots of just about .357 mag
>plus a single shot .410 shotgun
>>
>>32043739
I'd give up the 9 shot capacity if it could be chambered in .357 Magnum instead. I don't really see .327 around too often. You could probably get 8 shots of .357 and a .410 without it being too gigantic.
>>
>>32042313
No, you wouldn't and the people who make guns know you won't.

You'll say it's totally cool and you want it and you'll pay whatever but when it comes to actually paying the 3000 ish dollars for that you go back and say 'W-well if a one off weird gun made in small numbers is going to charge that much I'll take my money to Taurus. At least they understand value!'

And then they'll go bankrupt and you'll say 'Man, that was super cool, someone should do that again'

I was just thinking last night how fast I would buy a new production 357/410 LeMat.
>>
>>32043846
Aaaannnd get fucked because it does not cost that much for a BLACK POWDER Lemat much less one in hot .357 after factoring R&D ( you can't make a 1:1 clone you actually need to think about all the parts that go together, hand fitting and blueing (for a gun this small production no one would spend 1200 and then need to the polish it themselves), Heat treating, initial tooling and machining costs and materials you have a gun that would sell worse than shit.

As in literal shit, just get a couple cows and acres of land and start a farm operation, collect manure to market because for 1200 a fucking unit for something that would require hundreds of machine and man hours that would be preferable than make guns at a loss for fat autists on the internet

You want a Lemat in whatever bullshit caliber you want? Learn CAD and buy a 10,000 CNC machine and find a good place to heat treat your frame and cylinder.
>>
>>32042313
Iirc, somebody did it in the 70s-80s. Iit was chambered in .22 lr, .357 mag, and 20 gauge (possibly .410, but I'm remembering 20 ga for some reason).

There were some issues with the ATF, so the designer had to incorporate a fixed stock and make the barrels 18". That kind of killed it.

Federal law says a shotgun by legal definition must be designed to be fired from the shoulder. This is not and would not be a sbr.

Look at the super shorty. Not a sbr because not designed to shoot from the shoulder.

At most this would be an AOW. If the barrel is rifled then it might just be a pistol.
>>
>>32045390
Put rifling in the barrel and chamber it for .410/.45LC and it's essentially a single shot Taurus Judge.

There's such a big fucking different between .410 and 20 gauge, not to mention 16 (original LeMat) or the likely 12 gauge we could have.

No, Serbu got around the SBS definition by building it from the ground up as an AOW. There is no "at most" or "might" about it, the law is quite clear. Rifling makes it a pistol if it is built as a pistol, which is why you can't just add a stock on an AR/AK pistol and expect it to fly; that's manufacturing a SBR.

Having a short shotgun barrel in this combination gun like this would absolutely make it an AOW, which would require the BATFE agreeing with common sense and not just up and declaring it a destructive device (barrel is over 0.50 inches in diameter) because they can.
>>
>>32051032
Oh wait lmao my bad, for some reason I thought we were talking about a 12 gauge in the center.

Nevermind, the AOW would completely fly. Though a 12 gauge in the center would be much more useful.
>>
>>32050855
It was a 16 gauge.

What's the legality of having 357 mag cartridges in the cylinder and a blackpowder cap & shot barrel like the official repros?
>>
>>32051250
>What's the legality of having 357 mag cartridges in the cylinder and a blackpowder cap & shot barrel like the official repros?

They have those? Where?
>>
>>32051250
They were originally made in 20 ga, later in 16, and rarely in .41 bore. The chambers were .42, .35, and .32.
>>
>>32051900
Pietta makes some, google it. Many modern repros have a muzzle loading cylinder firing .44 caliber and 20 gauge. It's all blackpowder so it can go right to your door.

I'm just wondering if I can keep the 20 gauge center barrel and get the revolving part to take modern .357 magnum cartridges for 9 shots plus a coup de grace.

>>32052029
Thanks, you learn something every day.
>>
>>32052056
There were pin fire ones, so a cartridge firing lemat is possible, but that's outside my understanding of gunsmithing/making. I hope to get a repro sometime, just because they're pretty cool.
>>
>>32051250
It would be a firearm, like a normal .357 revolver. You'd have to go through an FFL. Black powder doesn't require the FFL or deal with restrictions like barrel length.
>>
>>32052461
That's what I figured. It'd allow the shotgun without making an SBS
>buy revolver
>happens to have a 20 gauge tube with a percussion cap system compatible with the hammer
