Basically nothing. The only thing you gain by making the round fuckoff huge is the ability to make rounds carry more exotic payloads like HEAT. If you just need to transfer a massive amount of energy into a target to defeat armor or something, you're better off just upping the velocity to an insane degree. F=MA, which means you can increase round energy by increasing mass or energy. Faster rounds are easier to aim at distance, and offer more innate Armor Penetration capacity.

is a better equation for what you are describing, but you are correct. Increasing velocity has an exponential effect on energy versus increasing mass.

Obviously projectile construction and the dynamics of how that energy is delivered into a target come into play, but it will suffice for the argument.

The fluff is that the rounds themselves have a conventional propellant that gets them up to speed out the barrel and once they are in the air the rocket kicks in.

They also have a delayed explosive core so they punch through armour and then explode on the other side.

Although there are a tone of cases in the fluff of unarmoured people surviving being shot because a human body is not enough to set off the core.
