Weird as fuck question, but whats a good handgun for innawoods/onnafarm?

I know theres a lot of discussion of ranch rifles but not much of pistols. Sometimes theres brush thats too thick to drive through and its simply not practical to carry around a long gun everywhere.

So whats a decent handgun for snakes, and small to medium predators?
>>
>>32029227
Ruger Redhawk that fires both .45ACP via moon clips and .45 Long Colt.

Unless you are going to Alaska or Africa, that's all you need.

Keep some decently hot 45 long colt loads in it for carrying around, plink with cheap ass 45 acp

Or alternatively buy a cheap ass police trade in glock 22 and swap in a 357 sig barrel and now you have a flat as fuck shooting gun that can take down predators

Could you be a bit more specific? Not being a prick, just trying to figure out how big of a threat you're talking about, in order to suggest a gun and caliber.

A 357 Magnum will be cheaper and will do everything you need. Just get a cheap Taurus
>>
>>32029353
Coyotes, bucks, badgers, possibly hogs. Not that anon but that makes up about 90 percent of what you encounter in most places. I guess bears and cats if you're in the mountains, but not much you can do about those.
>>
>>32029365
>>32029372

This, 357 mags can be loaded even up to black bear with 180g hard cast bullets.

Or for 125 grain for anything weighing around a man's size.

Please get something at least with a 5 inch barrel so you'll get maximum velocity out of your cartridge

Pretty much what he said although there are coyotes and wolves in my area that i need to worry about. Along with a rumored cougar, but i take those rumors with a healthy grain of salt.
>>
>>32029458
45 long Colt may be better for cougar then
>>
>>32029458
You can mainly find them in collage bars, campuses, and ordering ungodly amounts of pizza with a spare camera man.

Cougars (both kinds I dare say) are alive and kicking here in Florida. Although you might be from the North, given that wolves are coyotes 90% of the time and the bobcat/cougar the other 10% here in Florida.
>>
>>32029246
This isn't a bad idea.

>>32029372

You don't need a gun for snakes and small predators, you need a gun for defense from humans running illegal grow operations out in the middle of nowhere

Get a full size 9mm/40/45 whichever you shoot best

How is 10mm not a valid choice?
>>

10mm is a good option, as are the magnum revolvers. I'd say the revolver might be a better choice for ammo sharing with a lever gun.

10mm will stop a moose, it's perfectly valid if not more than you need for the continental US

Not referring to a webm. Born and raised in Alaska.
>>
>>32031131
There's a webm of some asshole on a snowmobile shooting a moose with a 10mm because he was too lazy to find away around Bulwinkle.
>>
>>32031152
Well that's not very nice.

Regardless, .40 S&W is a crippled 10mm so if .40 was enough, 10mm surely is
>>
>>32031025
>tactitard fantasies that will never happen
99.9% of things you will kill in the woods will be varmints and pests/predators

A 9mm will probably stop a wolf but there's no reason not to carry a 357 or 45 lc in case. Besides you're more worried about the 12 snakes and 3 possums you'll have to kill this year than the one weed grower that only needs to have a gun pointed at him to make him leave

And though not ideal... 180 hard casts can also be used against a Grizzly

As a man who has shot a gun before, I would recommend a 45-70 revolver.

Literally not an argument. You may have some sort of fucking cowboy fudd fetish, but it doesn't mean that a .357 revolver is a superior choice to a Glock 20.

Oh, yeah. They're usually stuff like this .22 caliber thing; just a normal cartridge loaded with tiny shot instead of a slug. Guns like the Judge are designed to accept a .410 gauge shotshell to give you a wider variety (combined with shallow rifling in the barrel so repeated use won't fuck 'em up too much) but people have been using "snake loads" in .22 to whack snakes and small birds that sneak into barns for ages.
>>
>>32031152
Fuck off Greenpeace.

You conveniently left out the part where said moose attacked him while his kid was on the snow mobile with him. Turning around to find another path (which might have taken time they didn't have) would have exposed the kid to the moose.

I'd love to see all you retards that bitch about that WebM be put in the same situation.

There are maybe ten of you retards that aren't just talking shit and are actually dumb enough to risk your kid over a fucking moose.
>>
>>32031250

They'd both work fine so I don't see a huge problem with either. Really comes down to auto versus revolver preference, unless you can find a revolver that chambers 10mm with moonclips.
>>
>>32031250
>Literally not an argument
Millennial detected, opinion discarded.

But to put you in your place full house 357 loads are more potent than the average "correct" 10mm load and almost all regular factory 10mm loads are just 40 ballistics.

If anything is not an argument it's the memes and false hype surrounding a round you probably don't even shoot.

>and almost all regular factory 10mm loads are just 40 ballistics.

Makes sense, they don't wanna get sued by pussies who bought shit guns. Ironically .357 and 10mm are similar beasts; they were both developed out of weaker rounds to fill a request for something with more pep. They just overdid it with 10mm, which is why we've got .40 now, and why a lot of factory 10mm loads are kicking around at .40 velocities.

But Glocks will eat fucking anything so a Glock 20 loaded with Buffalo Bore 10mm or something else that actually operates near maximum case pressure would be a mean motherfucker. Whether that's better or worse than a revolver in .44 magnum is up to individual preference; imo automatics are a lot easier to control recoil with but a bigger heavier gun goes a long way towards controlling recoil too (which is what you get with a revolver.) In either case you'll be magdumping into a grizzly while screaming like a little girl so it probably doesn't matter.
>>
>Semi-auto

>Revolver
.357, .44 if you're looking at bears and shit. Other magnums work but they're stupidly expensive.
>>
a good 357 mag revolver and a 357 carbine lever rifle to match it. Revolver for close, carbine for farther.

> .357 and 10mm are similar beasts; they were both developed out of weaker rounds

Ackshually while .357mag was developed from the lighter .38spl, whereas .40 S&W was developed from the hotter 10mm because female FBI agents have glass wrists.

Honestly, I'm more aghast at more people recommending .45lc over .44 mag in this thread. The case walls of .45lc are ultimately its limiting factor in loading it to specs preferable for boar and bear which is why the thicker-cased .44spl was chosen by Elmer Kieth for hotrodding into a magnum cartrige instead. Can and has .45lc taken big and dangerous game? Yes. Would I choose it given the choice between .44mag and .45lc around dangerous game? No.

.357 Magnum revolver is my first choice, since you can carry different kinds of ammo ready to go, including snake shot, .38 wadcutters for cute, fuzzy bunnies, all the way up to hot Buffalo Bore magnum hog rounds.

I'd also suggest a a full-flap holster. The Russian Nagant holster works great for a 4" Smith 19 or 66, and it has a pouch for spare ammo and a cleaning rod. Ruger GP100 might also fit. Not sure.

Also maybe add a lanyard ring. Sucks to lose your handgfun in a downhill tumble.

Pistol:
Glock 20 (10 mm), which I don't have, but my buds tell me are great.

I don't need super hot rounds. I ran around Alaska with a 1911 in .45acp and it was enough for a wolverine.

Most threads on /k/ say you should have super magnum bolt actions for Alaskan Bush hunting, but most of the time I see locals with just 12 gauge shotguns or eith surplus bolt actions in 30-06 equivelents like 7.62x54r or .303 british.

If you live in the city, you still have to deal with varmints and predators. The difference is that the city ones tend to have two legs instead of four.
